Thomas out for Hombsch probably worst selection blunder of the century. Roughead and Gunston killed us.

They killed us because of the work upfield by their midfield. Hombsch would have been worked over as badly as anyone the way the ball came in with swarming support.

We didn't lose this at selection. They are better than us and they played like it. We didn't use the ball well enough.

As b0ydman said a good learning experience all round, now we know what it takes to be very good.

Franklin pulled out and was replaced by 186cm Cheney.

Roughead and Gunston are 193cm, we had enough defenders that can match up on them for height. Gunston didn't take a contested mark.

They killed us with our overuse of the ball and turnovers and their hard running forward and back, opening us up behind the play.

They sure did, but that doesn't mean that the matchups weren't horrible.

Regularly expecting Jonas and Carlile to cede height and strength in unwinnable assignments is yucky fritz, pal.

We really missed Westhoff today. Even though I didn't agree with Hombsch being dropped I don't think his omission changed the result but it probably did change the margin though. We also just lack midfield depth. Thomas is A+ for effort but if we're going to show serious improvement, we're going to need better options. Newton, Young, Mitchell and Ah Chee really need to stand up and give performances that demand AFL selection.

Our players looked jaded which was always going to be the danger coming from playing on that disgraceful, indoor concrete arena and then onto the soft.

Our skills were the difference today. The Hawkers looked every bit the class unit they are and we looked like apprentices who are learning their trade.

It is very important that we take this on the chin, learn and be better next week. I have every confidence in the management of our side from the coach down and I look forward to the rest of the season.

Hombsch can't make up for every single defender having absolutely zero idea how to guard space. The last piece of football I watched today was Jonas standing on his own outsite the fifty arc while Roughead ran away from Carlile and took an unconsted mark 10 metres behind Jonas.

It digusts me how dumb our backline is at the easiest thing in the game, watching the other bloody team.

Discussing this at the game with RussellEbertHandball and others, our defensive team effort was nowhere near as good as Hawthorn's. Whether we need another defensive coach (sorry Nicksy) or just more time to sort it out is the question.

What was with the handball, disgraceful skills, i never thought i would have to say again this year but that was no better than 2012. Hawks were good but why did we have to make them look even better with poor skills and why do we go to ground so much, the only reason i can think of is they think they are not as good as their opponent and go to ground to try and force a ball up. Gees we missed Westhoff today.

I think we need a tall defender who can actually play, Carlile and Trengove are simply not good enough. Our number one priority this offseaon should be offloading Carlile and bringing in an expensive defender to replace him. The only position he can play is full back, and he is far too short and slow for it.

But how did Clarko back in his talls any more than Hinkley? He can only pick what he has. Hombsch is much of a muchness when you already have 193cm O'Shea, 192cm Carlile (who would get a tall defensive opponent no matter what), 191cm Paul Stewart and 188cm Jonas (who has shown he can play tall). The problem wasn't that they were monstered by tall forward like Hawkins and Podsiadly did, Hawthorn beat us with finesse.

Clarko didn't bring in a 196+cm player to replace Franklin, so it's not like he backed in some super tall forward line.

The numbers they had running in support and delivering the ball into the F50 was the problem not the height of our defenders. Mate.

We need to open the chequebook.

As for drop Neade? Come on, he got 2 goals in a q. And was r@ped by the umps should have had a kick for 3.

Tbh, imo, ken should be dropped before Neade.

On what planet was Neade not brought on earlier?

Yes, I agree and we didn't chuck in the towel and feel sorry for ourselves so there is no shame in being beaten by a better side on the day.
Agreed but our poor decision making and over use of handball and going to ground at every opportunity, made them look even better. At times in that last quarter, the Hawks were doing it easier than at training.

Can anyone tell me what is the go with Campbell Heath? A lot better than Pittard and Thomas imo. Kane Mitchell as the sub was perfect too and why cant Aaron Young get a run?

We won't offload Carlile after signing a 4 year contract. We were hurt by the delivery into the F50 much more than terrible one on one defence. We just couldn't get the ball out with any assurance which again comes back to Hawthorn's structures and pressure. But remember they have been on top of their game for at least 6 years. They are miles ahead of us, but we know what we are aiming for at least.

We didn't play well today Ford. I don't think that we should start agitating for a change of coaches and the like.

It's the worst we've played in a long while and it is going to happen from time to time until we become a hard edged unit just like Hawthorn.

I agree with most of your comments but today we did not play our best footy, our best footy would have got us within a few goals, it was the handball that had me pulling out the small amount of hair i have left. Hawthorn are very good but it's no excuse for the amount of loose players they had. If this game were played under Primus we would be calling for his sacking.

I understand what we were hurt by, but playing Carlile on the oppositions best forward for the next 4 years is definitely not a good choice.

We need a taller, smarter, faster version of Alipate. If he was 195 I would persist, but he is never going to be able to beat your Franklin's or even Tippet's without a lot of help and that just isn't the best we can do.

Too strong, too classy, too skillful
Umpires terrible

Keep butcher for the Saints as we may be able stretch them
In Hoff Out Neade (rest)

Sorry, what?
