It's getting harder and harder to to argue that we need to play two rucks.
If Lobbe could play up forward it would be easier. Even if he plays well tomorrow vs South, I wouldn't bring him in.

I assume the boundary ump has reported Hodge - for this dog act.

Why don't hawthorn fans like going to the footy?

Winning and playing attractive football is such a bore. I just want to ride my fixie and go to bars where I can drink kale juice out of a jam jar.

Why not do both?

With the sub rule gone, there will be games we need to play 2 rucks when Lobbe is a better match up. Dont be surprised if we play 2 rucks for 12-15 games next year.

Fantastic team performance, just fantastic. We started well, built a lead and never gave it up. Even when Hawthorn challenged we always found a way to hold on and kick away again. Such a composed, mature performance.

The result was surprising but not a $10 upset as the bookies would have you think. I always thought we'd compete well, probably not well enough to win, but our record against the Hawks is good and we aren't as bad as people think we are. Take out the Bulldogs game, which is a total red herring because we didn't try that day, and you'll see that we have normally played up or down to the level of our opponents this year. So we were always going to be thereabouts but to actually win and win well in the end is just bliss.

Hawthorn have this thing where they don't defend against us. Other teams always have numbers back and lock down on our dangerous forwards. But not Hawthorn. They back themselves but at the same time they leave lots of space out the back and through the middle for us to exploit. It sounds ridiculous but I'd much rather play Hawthorn than some scrapper team like Carlton. They give us a chance to play our natural game.

Some great individual performances tonight.

Wingard just keeps setting new standards for consistent brilliance.

The Gray boys superb around the stoppages. 68 touches between them.

Ryder dominated the taps from start to finish, giving the Gray boys and others an armchair ride.

Pittard and O'Shea really stood tall in the absence of Carlile and Trengove, playing composed footy and defending well often against bigger opponents.

White and Neade busy across half forward.

Hartlett, Ah Chee, Westhoff all very good.

In the end it's a meaningless, bitter sweet result from a ladder perspective. But what we can take out of this in a team building sense should not be underestimated. This game should be the bench mark for how we want to play and should be referred to all pre season as such. Even when we come up against those scrapper teams who take our game away from us, we need to have the courage to still attempt to play the way we did tonight. Every player on the list should watch that game over and over and over again because that is exactly, exactly the sort of football we need to play to challenge next year and beyond.

An excellent win.

Loved the game from S Gray, Krak (seems to have a yard or 2 extra coverage at contests as his fitness builds), Pittard and AhChee. Fringe/flakey players playing well is worth so much it aint funny.

I'm in the single ruck camp well and truly. That extra runner helps our game so much.

Agree with everyone ... Fabulous game by all! Didn't really have any weak link, but I just feel that people have not mentioned Monfries much at all .... IMO was one of his best games for Port, certainly his best for the year. His three goals were great, but even more so his in-your-face niggling of Hawthorn defenders, push and shove, etc. Hawthorn board went into meltdown over him, got under their skin, and clearly got under his opponents skin.... Awesome to watch!

Just got home, late night but fuark that was good. Such an amazing team performance! Dare I say, but between us and Hawthorn, we're the better of the two teams when matched up! Wingard was awesome, kicked two more goals after that cowardly snipe from Hodge and the two Gray boys with 68 possessions combined!

Best thing was I had some Hawthorn woman sitting behind me, she complained about an umpiring decision so I said "Has the Preliminary Final escaped your mind (in terms of blaming umpires)?" and her response was the 2007 Grand Final...that was all she had all night! Her husband was a Geelong supporter so he chimed in with 2007 as well so they did not have much else to use against us. Other Hawthorn supporters around us were getting stuck into Boak, one even said that he couldn't captain Box Hill! Well they should all look at their own captain first!

All in all, a great night to be a Port supporter! And Hawthorn can eat a bag of dicks too, hope they don't mind playing a final outside Victoria for the first time since 2010!

I am extremely proud of Sammy Gray and Ah Chee. Both players who really haven't been given enough of a shot at AFL over the past few years and they really showed tonight they are more than capable. Both brilliant hand ballers and I am looking forward to watching them play the next 2 weeks. I am sure I'll be recruiting some more on the Ah Chee bandwagon after the past 2 weeks. Choo Choo

I am sometimes critical of Pittards defensive work and disposal. Brilliant tonight, that is the Jasper we need.

Chad, best small forward in the game by an absolute country mile, another brilliant game from him. Robbie and Chad are really the only consistent performers for the year and they played great games again.

Boaky for me is lacking confidence I think but hopefully he can get back to his 2014 form next year. He must be reading too many of my posts. A confident boak does not miss that shot in the last quarter and the other opportunity where he passed, he would've nailed it also. I am highly critical of him but I know how good he can be and how important he is to the team, so that's why I am.

Ryder a brilliant game, throws up the debate on how we structure up next year and why Lobbe wasn't dropped 3 months ago.

I am so happy for the players out there today, unfortunately we aren't playing for much and if these droppings and personnel changes had happened earlier in the year, maybe we would've had something to play for. Hopefully the same mistakes aren't made next year. You don't give an out of form player 4 months in the AFL before you drop them.

Magnificent post

After the Bulldogs game I gave up on thinking about September, so I'm just enjoying every game as it comes.

Things I'm most pleased about:

We finally have a full set of reliable second tier mids
1st tier: Gray, Boak, Wines, Hartlett, Ebert (with glasses)
2nd Tier: Polec, White, Ah Chee, Sam Gray, Impey/Neade cameo

And for the record I still back Young to join this group.

Hartlett is building
Sneakily becoming a top-3 mid for us. His hardness at the pack is something he really brought into his game this year, I think we can credit Voss with that one. One moment in the first half comes to mind where he barrels into a 5050 contest with Hodge and co, resulting in the ball spilling free to our Port spread and subsequent downfield goal. Does this regularly now.

Patrick Ryder stays first ruck
The new interchange rule changes had better benefit a 2-ruck setup, otherwise Lobbe won't be getting regular games. Ryder's taps are sublime, and his fieldwork is sensational, he's a huge weapon.

Boak the Last Quarter Specialist
Like clockwork, starts the game heavily tagged, seems to have a player hanging off him at every contest; initially cramped, but come the final quarter he's everywhere, been like that for 3 years now. Would love to see how his Q4 stats compare with other mids.

Butch is the Hoff's Heir Apparent
Becoming increasingly clear that Butch is most damaging as a roaming forward, running up and down the ground. Good below the legs, mobile, sticky hands yet dodgy kick, has the running to get back to the forward line when we need him, just seems to lack confidence; now where have I heard that before. Having a few strings to his bow will save Butcher's career.

Gameplan
We cut them open plenty of times through the middle with brave kicks, our handballs were slick and we had those runners continuing to pop up behind players as they were pressured and tackled. In the podcast the point was made that we play well against Hawthorn as they back themselves in and allow us to play our natural game, rather than crowding the corridor and the ground a kick ahead of the play. The trick still remains doing this on an opposition intent on stopping our natural game.
