Review R5: Port v Gold Coast review

Crushed. Absolutely crushed.

Remember one thing though, in 1997 we were tipped to not win a game and won in round 3 against Geelong. Leigh Mathews famously said to never tip Port Adelaide and we proved them wrong. Let's see how Cats fan dealt with that?

Well, despite being the first club to lose to not only Port in 1997 but Freo in 1995 (and losing at K.P in Rd 2 1987 to the Bears!!:p, we managed to come back fairly well, as we were top-4 in both 1995 and 1997.

It's early enough in the season to turn things around, but i will sympathise with yourselves as it is rather embarrasing. As i posted elsewhere i would rank today's game with our loss to Fitzroy in Rd 9 1991, when they were 0-8 with a percentage less than 50, and had been beaten by the Eagles by 100 points the previous week. It was not a fun day i will admit.

If hitchcock is selected again for this team i am not going to bother watching. For a small crumbing forward he sure has good goal sense.....

St.Kilda de-listed Cappuano half way through a season one year. Just sayin'.

Nobody should have to pay to witness the crap witnessed today.

Port Adelaide has always been a proud club that shows heart.

In recent times the club has shown nothing and today was ANOTHER perfect example.

Pathetic

Played like millionaires with only $2.95 in the bank

Pathetic, ****ing pathetic

.... sure hope we put the $1mill debt reductioin raised, on the suns at 12/1?

I don't think Dan Stewart can be blamed for what happened today. For 3/4 he broke even in the ruck and watched us still get beaten in the clearances. In the last quarter it was the mids and defenders who let us down.

I didn't think he went as well as break even in the ruck but did take a few good marks around the ground and got a few good kicks into the F50. Still doesn't seem strong enough in those 1-1 contests ****ed if I know why.

Not the worst out there today by any means but the frustrating thing is he ought to be better than he is.

Think boak may still be having issues with his groin. He seems to always be massaging it.

And broadbent must go out for banner. And hitchcock must go out for anyone

I hope the coaches keep this game on tape. Then make players who are out of contract at the end of the year sit down and watch it.

These days players are "professional" players and football is their "work". They're all eyeing off the new AFL TV deal being re-negotiated and thinking about the fat pay rises they're going to receive.

In any other profession if you ****ed up a project the way these guys are ****ing up games... there is no way in hell you would walk into your appraisal and ask for a pay rise... so I hope Port play hardball with these guys.

We seriously need to adopt Fos Williams motto:

SUCCESS: AT ANY COST!

An attempt at a review...

I'll give this a try because unlike most I'm not angry or shocked at that loss. It really wasn't a surprise, remember the last 3 years? How about a few weeks back v West Coast or the training run for Geelong?

I accepted a long time ago that Chaplin, Rodan, Westhoff, Salopek, Ebert, etc, etc. wouldn't take us anywhere. We are a good chance to lose any game that Chaplin plays, and if you think Kornes or Pearce would have made any difference... Our senior players with the exception of Brogan, Surj and Cassisi are not good enough.

Carlile and Chaplin were horrific. Definitely worst on ground in the last 2 qtrs. Didn't man anyone up and at one stage they had 3 players in the goal square v one of ours, Dixon I think marked and goaled.

Boak disappointing as well, don't think he was tagged. Needs to get more of it and use it better.

Terrible changes. Resting Brogan, Hitchcock, no key forward.

Hitchcock can get even uglier, we haven't seen him squib a contest yet because he doesn't really get to any. Should be in the SANFL.

The coaches box played a huge part in the loss and we won't win anything until we replace them with decent coaches. Once or twice we had the ball and plenty of space ahead but nobody up forward... for the 4th week in a row. Another goal would have been handy, hey?

+ all our players are unfit our injured.

Bit of respect for the Suns? Swallow, Matera and Smith look like they will be great players. They are a decent team and they clicked this week, our coaches and players underrated them and now we're the first team to lose to them.

Ablett, Rischitelli, Harris and Swallow v Boak, Salopek, Broadbent, Hartlett in the middle. They probably have us beat in skill and experience in the midfield, even in the ruck with Smith v Stewart.

Uh, positives...

Hartlett, Westhoff... Motlop... Surj? passable.

lol at those who wanted Motlop delisted/traded, he and Surj are fine and he is playing good football again.

Pittard will learn from that, maybe, hopefully.

So, next week:

IN: Kornes
OUT: Somebody

...and nothing changes. :thumbsu:

Well said, Kaysee. That any of these guys since 2007 are on the gravy train, sitting around playing PS3 half the week is sickening.

I might unfollow 2 or 3 of them on Twitter to really show I mean business.

Re: An attempt at a review...

So what's Laidley doing? Can someone please tell me what he brings to the coaches box? I've heard people calling him a tactical genius, a defensive master. We show nothing tactically and apply next to zero defensive pressure all over the ground. He's not even living here and apparently just rolls in and out of town as he pleases.

Efforts like today show why we are the laughing stock of the comp. David King never said a truer word earlier in the week about us being mentally shallow. Our stand in captain Chaplin really stuffed up big time with his countless turn overs and his buddy down back Bob was a disgrace, Rodan showed today why he should never be in our team again unless he is the sub - he is just to hit and miss.

It was talked about all week about how we would get up for this week, Primus is the head man and he has failed miserably. Not saying we should chop him (shouldn't of signed him in the first place) but gee I'd hate to be him right now - we just have nothing to work with and our players are gutless!! Even if we did appoint Scott, would he have been able to do anything with this rabble?

Re: An attempt at a review...

Yup, 4 players only can not feel embarrassed... Hartlett, Westhoff, Motlop and Surj. Trengove almost, but some things he should remain embarrassed about.

No one else on the team came even slightly close to caring today, least of all the coaches.

Before bothering with the details of the game, if there's one thing that I hated more then any other during Choco's reign it was:

Play and win a quarter or a game of football by playing attacking footy and remembering there's a corridor after the default play of kick it backwards/sideways shit doesn't work. Only to line up against the next game playing the same fraking crap that didn't, doesn't and never will work.

The writing was on the wall from almost the start, after we started kicking multiple kicks backwards. Yet again the 'strategy' of kicking it across goals, handballing and generally refusing to be accountable and try to move it forward resulted in numerous turnovers and opposition goals.

When a team full of youngsters plays the corridor and we do our usual crawl around the wings, the usual coaches excuses of we don't have the bodies to command the centre is as hollow as our players regular pledges of lines in the sand being drawn.

One special mention though is how I hated how under Choco we'd be 5+ goals up then go kick to kick with 3 or 4 minutes left. Hated it. The only time to do that is when you are just ahead and need to save a match. Oh wait, you mean like today? So don't go waste time when it's the one time to do the thing? *Whack* *whack* *whack* <- This is my head against the wall.

Perhaps a North fan can correct me if i'm wrong but wasn't this also a trademark of Dean Laidley's time at North?

Re: An attempt at a review...

Unfortunately Hitchcock has gone the same way as Wade Thompson and The Knack.

Really really bad loss by Port no doubt about it. But at the end of the day it is a minor round game and there will be next week.

As a Cats supporter Ive seen a Freo and Port register their first win against us. Also the Brisbane Bears beat us at Kardinia in their second game. Its embarassing but its not the end of the club or other hyperbolic reactions Im seeing here.

EXACTLY!!

I mean we are tripe and fold under pressure and this has to be sorted out or there is going to be much more darker days than just being the first to lose to a new team oh horror of horrors

read the Crows board for perspective and they were going even more ape last week after we beat them.

I was a big fan of Primus but have lost my faith.

I hate how this Football club now accepts mediocrity, I want to see heads roll.....

Why the **** does Hitchy get game after game, he is ****ing useless. Can't kick for shit, done nothing in SANFL and gets brought back in and doesn't deserve it. I was ropable in the first half when he was missing shots and then to sub Rodan before Hitchy, you have no idea Primus. I hated that game, even when we were 40 points up I was disappointed then to lose it was just amusing.

Last year Richmond, this year Gold Coast, the players are mentally gone and the Coach has no idea resting our main ruckman, playing list cloggers etc
I will stick by the club, not sure why as we get fed the same shit year in year out, but I know today's damage will hurt the branding and image of this once proud club and unfortunately we are going to lose a lot of support.

Season is now over, the easy cop out is play all the kids and win 2-3 games and re-build. I want to play our BEST 22 players each week, who cares if they are old!!! Make the young kids earn their spots, we need depth, not kids who get a few kicks in the SANFL and a free pass into the AFL.
I pay a lot of money each year to watch our best players, how is Kane Cornes not in our best 22.

Why were players not changed from after the Showdown if Primus is trying to make a point, we were down by 6 goal in that Showdown and still had a few players who were down and have been all year.

I am just disappointed with Primus and how he has persisted with Spuds like Hitchcock and we have our 4 time bnf on 500K a year running around in the SNAFL reserves. Surely he could have done a job on Ablett.

Motlop, Surjan and Westhoff were good. O'Shea had by far his best game for the club and is finally vindicating his selection. Everyone else was anywhere between average and pathetic.

Carlile: GWS are welcome to this fat lazy spud.

Pettigrew: 25/26 years old and still a terrible, terrible footballer. He is a perfect example of a player who will not take us forward. If he ever plays a game for the PAFC again I'll be pissed off.

Pittard: Horrible game. His kick-out to put them in front was one of the worst things I've ever seen on a football field. Very lucky he has credits in the bank.

Boak/Gray/Hartlett: Not good enough for players of their potential. Boak and Gray did three fifths of **** all, and although Hartlett got a lot of the ball his game was littered with mistakes which aren't good enough for someone who we know is such a good kick.

Broadbent: Has done nothing this year. Has time on his side but needs to pull his finger out.

Salopek: See Broadbent, minus the 'has time on his side' bit.

Hitchcock: WTF happened? He burst onto the scene last year and showed a heap of promise, this year he looks like he wouldn't be out of place in the SANFL reserves.

Chornes: That is the worst game he has ever or will ever play. Lazy, selfish and pathetic. If he has any self-respect he'll retire tomorrow.

Logan: Can someone tell him that the whole suicidal attack on the ball no matter who's around thing only works when the guys he's half-killing himself trying to spoil are on the other team? He must've cost us 2 or 3 goals today from crashing into Port players in better positions.

Rodan: We know what he can do when he's on song, but he's about 28 years old and he's still an inconsistent front-runner who is symptomatic of results like this. Before this year he was one of my favourite players, but right now I wouldn't be fussed if he never played for the PAFC again, because he definitely won't play in a premiership for us. We need to clear out the older guys who are borderline best 22 or worse (Rodan, Pettigrew, Chad, Meyer, possibly Davenport if he doesn't show very soon that he can fulfil his potential as a 'supersub' type) because all they do is clog our list and stop a kid from getting valuable game-time when they're in their occasional runs of good form. Put him on the trade table next year and see if a premiership challenging side where he'll have freedom to downhill ski want him.

Out: Carlile, Pettigrew, Rodan, Chad, Hitchcock
In: Brogan, P. Stewart, Banner, Butcher, Irons.

Matthew Broadbent is lucky I want to see a youth policy, or he'd be out for Kane. Salopek is another who might be out for Kane if he doesn't pull his finger out.
Excellent Post:thumbsu:.

Re: An attempt at a review...

I didn't think Chaplin was that bad (maybe I just feel that way because relative to the rest of our defenders, anyone would look alright) but I agree with everything else you said.
Dunno, he dropped 1 or 2 uncontested marks and that was enough for me.
Broadbent must get dropped
No point.

IMO:

OUT: Carlile, ?????, Hitchcock

IN: Butcher, Brogan, Banner

Chad @ FB so that Carlile can't get back in easily, Butch forward.

Re: An attempt at a review...

I'd just like to add, and I'll no doubt get howled down here, but I thought Logan showed some anzac spirit. Yes he has his faults and I'm not necessarily even a fan, but he sets the example to other team mates in work ethic and putting is body on the line.
