Scandal Racist fan throws banana at Eddie Betts

Whether it was racist or not shouldn't make a difference. She threw an object at a player - ban her for life and move on, her motivations don't change anything. Is she a racist pos? Almost certainly. But there are a-holes in the world everywhere, this shouldn't be a surprise

Spot on.

Two separate issues for mine.

Throwing anything at a player should be an automatic life ban - there is no excuse for it.

Whether it was racist or not is a separate issue.

Say what you like about WA crowds but I swear I've never heard any racism at any games over here. AFL, WAFL or Ammos. I think it's because so many of our teams have aboriginals in them and we have all played together at all levels. As a kid when I heard what happened to Winmar and McAdam I just couldn't believe it being in the 90s ffs, as well as what Chris Lewis had to put up with.

Likewise. I've been going to West Coast games since the early 90s and have probably been to one Freo home game per year on average since they came in and I haven't seen or heard any racist idiots among the many, many idiots I've seen and heard.

Because the next victim might not be able to just shrug it off?

There's always a teaspoon of cement to soothe those hurt feelings if someone says something mean about you. People can throw bananas at me all day.

umm what Crows fans? He was in front of the Port cheer squad. Yes it was a great goal no doubt and he was getting accolades from me and many others around until he hang around unnecessarily on boundary line acting like a tool. Like I said no excuses for her behaviour but if Robbie Gray did the same down the other end you would expect the same reaction.
No he wasn't. He was in the pocket celebrating another great goal in front of the crowd albeit with a smattering of Crows supporters. We've seen it a hundred times and not just from Eddie. Personally I love seeing this emotion, this delight from any player doing something outstanding. Where there is no malice, no player should be afraid to interact with the crowd. Thankfully this sort of reaction is rare in Australia and we don't have to have high fences to protect our footballers unlike overseas. Show that person her actions were unacceptable.

How many people were watching this game over the Collingwood v GC game across Australia? Port Power fans in general embarrassed themselves on the national stage last night. There were many other instances where you could visibly see young children, older folk etc F'ing and C'ing Adelaide players, real classy. They wonder why everyone hates them and they're irrelevant.

2016: Banana incident

2017: There will be more as Port Power refuse to respond strongly to these incidents.

Crows chief operating officer Nigel Smart told The Advertiser the incident remains under investigation because of conflicting reports. But the Crows do have an admission of racial abuse towards Varcoe.

"We have contacted the member, he is an older gentleman and he is upset about it," said Smart.

"He has admitted to making a remark about Varoce and he is not proud of the fact he did.

"As a club we are making it clear that this is unacceptable and will not be tolerated by the Adelaide Football Club."

The Crows' executives expect to decide the fan's penalty beyond this season on Wednesday after considering a report from the club's membership department.

"The investigation is continuing and we do have some grey areas because of two versions of the incident," said Smart.

"Once that is clarified we will be in a position to decide if the man keeps his membership."

I have thin eyes from Spanish ancestry. I dont mind being called a slope

Edit: since it doesn't seem to be clear based on responses, I'm trying to show how ridiculous the original post I'm responding to is by putting it in another light.

You missed my sarcasm. Their season is over. Most port 2016 memberships are already in the bin.
Thought you meant him cancelling her 2017 membership, which he's done.
But yeah, cancelling a Port of Richmond membership for 2017 is no punishment.

I think the obvious solution to whether this was racist or not would be a 10 minute conversation with the lady in question.

I can't say for certain, but I think you'll get your answer.

Not that it should matter for the outcome- throw stuff at players and get a lifetime ban. See you later.
There are Facebook posts from other port supporters near the women who said she was calling him an ape. Apparently the crowd around her stood up to her a bit which is at least something

To suggest otherwise is totally naïve or disingenuous - you just don't get out much. So you KNOW it was the first thing she had to hand. What tosh. Black athletes > monkeys > bananas has been around for decades. Just ask Andrew Symonds. Why so defensive ?
Oh yes because someone packs a banana to every game the go to on the off chance and aboriginal player will come within throwing distance. Seems likely. As I have said the person is a scumbag but to say it was a premeditated racist act is making a huge leap

If this post is accurate, I'd question why she was/has been able to get away with it for so long. Does Adelaide Oval not have the security text lines that we have at the G and Docklands?

Every country, every person is inherently racist. It's a natural reaction.

I have to think that you're confusing racism with fear-based responses. Maybe I'm not - but it's a pretty depressing thought, especially when you consider the political discourse in this country, that everyone is just racist.

You have just started a big promotion in a new employment in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Part of the perks is you get two new interns at your work. They both get you coffees, run errands, and do assorted menial chores for you. You jokingly refer to them both as your 'slaves'.

One is white. The other is black.

Same thing? Or something totally different?

Context is nearly as important as intent mate. I see you kinda get it here in this post, but lets not try and suggest (as you did above) that calling a white guy a monkey and a black guy a monkey carries the same context, even when the intent is otherwise pure.

If we are going down this route wouldn't the position in itself be offensive to the black person if that was the case. Calling them a slave and asking them to perform the roles slaves use to have to perform is no different.

I have thin eyes from Spanish ancestry. I dont mind being called a slope.

So you guys get to be the arbiter of what people are offended by and what they see as an affront to their heritage, their race and their family?

That might be the most arrogant ****ing thing I've ever read.

As I posted previously, perhaps do some research into the history of government-sanctioned (and government-led) racism against Indigenous Australians before professing to tell them that you could possibly understand how they feel and make a personal comparison to it.

video is the reason I don't attend much live sport these days. pathetic adults acting like ****wits and losing their shit over men chasing a football. and for some illogical reason, the guys wearing different uniforms are somehow abhorrent in comparison to the guys in supporters colours.

The problem is she will be named and shamed .The Advertiser Crows Lynch mob will stalk her house and workplace maybe getting her sacked.People will harass her and her Family at her house and shopping centre. She should maybe ring the Adelaide FC and offer Eddie an apology. This could get very nasty for her.

Your club has deemed throwing things at players on the field only worthy of an 11 game "suspension".

Thats really showing her Kochie - weak as piss.

So you throw a banana at an Indigenous player & call him a monkey in the process, sounds pretty racist to me. A Life ban should be the least she gets.

Here we go again.

An idiot does something racist, so the SJWs are out in force branding anyone who doesn't join their lynchmob as racist and insisting that it's clearly a massive issue.
Idiot does something racist. People call her out. You call those people out. Interesting which side of the fence you've jumped to without much prompting.

Why isn't it ok to call her out for what she is?

He baited the crowd by celebrating and he got some of his own back..tough shit comes with the job..Im sure while he was growing up he got a lot worse.
What a pathetic post. Having stuff thrown at you does not come with the job. And I bet you have no idea what he got growing up. But that makes it alright does it?

Apparently the crowd around her stood up to her a bit which is at least something

It's not "at least" something. It is everything. We are all appalled by this.

Instead of turning this into a one-upmanship based on club rivalry, we should stick with condemning the individual and hang her out to dry.

Club membership cancelled.
Banned from all AFL Stadiums.
Fined for throwing an object onto the playing field.

She'll be on the receiving end of some pretty intense vilification herself now that her identity is all over social media.

100% serious. My sig's still there from the pre-season.

Get all the facts and come back to me.
OK. I'll stand corrected. You really are dumb, and no I'm not going to point out the obvious problems with you comparing the two incidents.
