You have just started a big promotion in a new employment in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Part of the perks is you get two new interns at your work. They both get you coffees, run errands, and do assorted menial chores for you. You jokingly refer to them both as your 'slaves'.

One is white. The other is black.

Context is nearly as important as intent mate. I see you kinda get it here in this post, but lets not try and suggest (as you did above) that calling a white guy a monkey and a black guy a monkey carries the same context, even when the intent is otherwise pure.

Funnily enough, I was in Atlanta for work a few years ago, and the colleague I was there with made a remark to the receptionists, about how polite and helpful the 'young boys at the valet are' - one of the receptionists started to take offense to it, until the other explained to her that it's not traditional a term associated with race in Australia.

The guy I was with apologized and made it very clear that wasn't his intention at all, and it was all good, but it gave us reason to be a bit more careful with our language.

There's a fair chance the national audience was distracted by a rubbish game on channel 7 tonight.

However, unfortunately at the showdown in Adelaide an unsavoury event unfolded that needs to be brought to attention. With 30 seconds left in the showdown between Port Adelaide and Adelaide (a Port Adelaide home game) Eddie Betts scored a goal from the boundary only to have a racist fan reach into her bag and throw a banana at him.

This is obviously a reprehensible and pre-meditated act. Who brings bananas to the footy?

If you know this racist human, go ahead and name and shame. Its time this kind of behaviour was stamped out of our game.

Disgusting and hopefully the AFL take action accordingly.

Say what you like about WA crowds but I swear I've never heard any racism at any games over here. AFL, WAFL or Ammos. I think it's because so many of our teams have aboriginals in them and we have all played together at all levels. As a kid when I heard what happened to Winmar and McAdam I just couldn't believe it being in the 90s ffs, as well as what Chris Lewis had to put up with.

A fair few people not everyone choice to eat junk food at the footy. You seem to think the only reason the banana was thrown was because Betts is aboriginal maybe it also had to do with the fact he just kicked the match winner the scumbag was pissed off and threw the first thing she grabbed at him. How many people were watching this game over the Collingwood v GC game across Australia? Port Power fans in general embarrassed themselves on the national stage last night. There were many other instances where you could visibly see young children, older folk etc F'ing and C'ing Adelaide players, real classy. They wonder why everyone hates them and they're irrelevant.

2017: There will be more as Port Power refuse to respond strongly to these incidents.

Add the famous Goodes, Winmar, McAdam, heck even Justin Sherman was suspended for making racial comments in a game. Then add the 3 or 4 incidents in tassy over the years, 2 of them involving the same supporter and it goes on and on.

The AFL have a lot to answer for themselves with the poor handling over these issues in the past and really only have themselves to blame because of it.

BTW before you say it, I'm not defending this women at all. It was a disgusting thing to do and she's been caught and dealt with.

The AFL shouldn't accept this behaviour any more, it's about time Gillon lead from the front this time and show some leadership.
