I should head to that shop more, even though I’m closer to Lalor Plaza (and we all know Lalor Plaza > Lalor Shops)

Does anyone around have Kayo Sports? What is it like? I'm thinking about getting it.

Exactly what fancy says here;

It's just Fox without the baggage of the Fox brand

I am pretty sure it is directly from the sports not the broadcasters?

Nope, Kayo is just a Foxtel sports package streaming service (owned by the same people). No extra content, just what you get across Fox Sports, ESPN and beIN on Foxtel.

If you have Foxtel already, do not waste your time or money.

I got the Kayo beta to give it a try. I currently have Foxtel, but the reality is I really only have it for sport, the household budget now has different priorities, and $70/month is getting a bit too steep. So reducing to $25/month would be a huge saving.

The content is exactly what you get from the Fox Sports, ESPN and beIN channels, there doesn’t appear to be any extra content that you wouldn’t get on Foxtel. There is also no Eurosport, Sky Racing or EPL club channels that you currently get as part of the Foxtel sports package. There is good on-demand content though, so although you don’t have the ability to record, you can start something mid-way and watch from the start, or watch on-demand straight after its finished.

The interface is pretty intuitive (I’m using it on Apple TV), very similar to Netflix’s layout, though it can be a little cumbersome at times. They have a live/upcoming line, then individual lines for different sports which have live/on-demand content, and if you scroll allllll the way to the bottom, they have a line where you can just choose the channel itself. For me, they need to have the live content more prominent. FS1-7, ESPN1-2, beIN1-3. Thats only 12 channels, so what is showing live on each of them should be easy to find off the bat, and then scroll further down to find on-demand content. Repeating tiles of live content is annoying. All of that is pretty minor stuff though, and something that with enough feedback they should streamline.

There are plenty of options for watching on your TV, though they all require a third-party device such as Apple TV or Chromecast. I’d hope they may develop a native app for popular brand TV’s, as we currently watch Netflix etc direct through one of our TVs (which is less than a year old) and I’d prefer to not have to buy a second Apple TV, but I won’t hold my breath on that.

The biggest challenge is going to be reliable delivery of service, and this is where I was most disappointed. I was watching the Sydney-Victory W-League/A-League double header on Sunday, and had semi-regular quality drops to 480p, at times losing sound as well. This is at 4pm on a Sunday, so hardly peak times. I have a 50mbps FTTH NBN connection, with the Apple TV connected via ethernet. I can stream 4K from Netflix and Amazon Video flawlessly 99.9% of the time, so I’m extremely confident that it is not an issue at my end.

If they can fix this up, it’ll definitely be a huge winner. As it is, I’m still leaning towards switching anyway, just to try and save a bit of money. If you love your sport, don’t have Foxtel and don’t care for the extra “entertainment” they force on you, then its worth a go. $25/m with no contract is great value. You can watch on two screens at a time, so split it with a mate and its only $12.50/m (there is also a three screen option for $35/m). But if you currently have Foxtel and have no intention of ditching it, then its a fairly pointless addition.

Depens what you mean by “entertainment” shows. Shows from Fox8 or TVHits? No.

But programming like AFL360, Open Mike, etc... absolutely yes. Currently all 2018 episodes of Open Mike are available on demand, for example.

I was intrigued when I saw the news about Kayo on the front of the Herald Sun yesterday, but seeing as we have Foxtel and use it for much more than just sports, it's pretty useless. Not sure whether it will take off though, even if I didn't have Foxtel, I could get AFL and NRL live on devices as a Telstra user.

On the topic of subscription services though - please tell me I'm not the only person who doesn't have Netflix? I have little interest in binging TV shows, and the large majority of movies I am interested in watching are not on Netflix. That, and the family already has a Foxtel and News+ subscription, so a third monthly cost wouldn't be kind to the hip pocket

I don't have Netflix either. I figure most of the good shows aren't even on there and I can find sites to watch them anyway.

I only recently got Netflix, and only because I got a giftcard for my birthday.
I watch a lot of tv, according to an app I have, I go through 20+ eps a week at the moment. Watch most of these shows using alternate stream sites, because they don't come on Australian TV.
As for movies, I use the alternate sites as well, because Netflix is very limited. Though if it's on Netflix, I'll watch it on Netflix.

Btw, outside of my 9-5 job and BigFooty, I'm writing my own webseries to produce. So I am very addicted to TV.

Have Netflix and watch it a fair bit (though have not binged that much recently and am falling behind on shows I do watch).

I also have NordVPN (jumped on a deal where I got 77% off on a 3 year plan) which even when connected to an Australian server makes the Netflix website think I am in the US, thus I have access to shows that are not available in Australia, while still having a strong internet connection that is not significantly reduced by being connected to an overseas server.

What does NordVPN cost you if you don’t mind me asking? And do you just log in with your Australian Netflix account but get the US library?

So I am very addicted to TV

I watch a fair bit of TV and use my laptop quite a fair bit, but I have pretty much no interest in streaming. Most of the shows I like are on FTA or Foxtel, and the movies I watch I'd rather have on Blu Ray or DVD, and use the DVD player I have for my laptop

I also have NordVPN

I've seen this advertised all the time, never really thought too much about it. They flog it off as being a source of security while you're online. Not sure how making your laptop think you're in another country makes it more secure, but, anyway

Ended up being about AU$4 a month (just under AU$150 for the 3 years).

Yeah, a Netflix login works anywhere in the world but you only get access to that locations content.

What it does is changes your IP address to where ever you want to be located, so websites cannot track your exact location and thus cannot tell who is accessing the content or what content you are viewing.

Also it allows you to gain access to websites that are region locked, so recently before their reversal I was still able to access the US version of Amazon when I changed my location to the US.

You do lose a little speed on your connection depending on where you are setting up your location (so keeping it in Australia basically does nothing, e.g. just doing a speedtest now gave me a connection speed of 89.35Mbps when not on NordVPN, 84.08Mbps when connected to an Australian server), but changing to the US drops my speed to 37.73Mbps (which is quite good, can drop to as low as around 9Mbps or even lower at peak times, but still good enough to view websites and videos at decent quality {just with a bit more waiting time}) and when I am on overseas servers I am not on them for that long so it has very little effect on how long it takes to do things.

The quality of FTA shows is very poor in Australia. There is too much empathise on reality television, and shit comedy shows. There's no good drama content to watch, and therefore I go towards the US shows.
Since CBS has bought Ch10 recently, there have been quite a few US shows that have come onto FTA tv, but as it still takes quite a while for the episode to come onto FTA it's just easier to watch off other sites. This purchase was also why Lisa Wilkinson moved from the Today show to the Project.
This is leading to many of the Australian actors moving to America to find work, like Margot Robbie and Dave Lawson.
I cannot wait for tv to come onto DVD, it'd rather watch shows in 720p or on my phone if it's quicker. Though shows like Game of Thrones and Vikings need to watched on the Big Tv. I used to watch certain shows live, because of all the buzz. Game of Thrones was one of them, due to the spoilers that would appear on social media. It was worth it for me. And I haven't had a CD drive on my last two laptops, so I can't see the purpose of buying DVDs.

Also, I cannot stand to watch Netflix tv shows, as they come out all on one day, and then you have to wait a full year just to binge watch another 13 episodes. Though Netflix has done a lot for a country like India, with it's censor board that is very strict on what get s take out of movies, Netflix has allowed for some new and modern content that involves simple things you expect in tv like sex and swearing.

One other thing, I do not watch superhero films. Cannot stand them. Generic storyline, just with a different hero and villan. I need movies and tv shows with different storylines, and out there storylines. They become predictable really easy. Even a movie like 21 Jump St just uses the formula of a romcom. The couple hate each at the start, and are forced to get along and become best friends, half way through the movie the split and then get reunited at the end of the movie happily every after.
On top of this, there are way too many remakes and reboots coming out. There is barely anything original. Magnum PI, Hawaii Five-0, Lethal Weapon Rush Hour Roseanne, Boy Meets World, Gilmore Girls or Murphy Brown are among of the few franchise that have been rebooted, along with the live animation remakes of the Disney movies. Plus, anything now is either based on a series of books or previous work, so that a pre-existing audience comes with the new show. And so therefore studio expect sequel after sequel after sequel. Take a show like 13 Reasons Why, the first season was based on a book (I think), worked perfectly, though I don't think it should have been targeted towards teens. The second season came out, not based on the book and tanked badly. This will also happen to Big Little Lies, which the second season is not base on a book.

Sorry to ramble on, and I do realize that I went into nowhere. But these are my thoughts on the current state of film and television. I could go on, on just this part of media, But I will stop now. Sorry again, hahah.
