Does that really justify Russia's invasion though? There's obviously fault on both sides to some degree and actions that could be considered escalations, but none of that compares to Russia's decision to invade Ukraine militarily. They just didn't have to do that, it hasn't furthered any of their goals, it's just gotten a lot of people killed and made them an international pariah. Western meddling in their area of the world just doesn't justify it. Even if they had a legitimate grievance, that response was out of proportion and it's clearly worse than what anyone else had done beforehand.

I feel like when people talk about this they aren't really consistent in the way they apply responsibility to each side. I'm all about not looking at things in a vacuum but you're only extending a little bit further into the past than someone who acts as if history began when Russia invaded.

That would be Ukrainian President Yanukovych, who was overthrown by his people after he ignored the will of his people and tried to sell his country out to Russia.

He fled to Russia and hasn't been heard from since.

This question is part of the problem, I think, because it's really two different questions. Would it be morally correct for Russia to be rewarded for their military invasion of Ukraine with expanded territory? No, obviously not. Would Ukraine ceding some of their land as part of a peace deal be a good way to bring about the end of this horrible conflict and save a lot of lives? Yeah, probably. There's no contradiction between those two positions, acting like there is just leaves the world on the hook to keep throwing Ukrainians down the death hole until Russia gives up and goes home.
