Martin is a ruckman, don't worry about that.

We're pretty set at the moment, but wouldn't say not if he was offered.

Well done lions.

Just got back from the weekend. No WOFTAM this time. We faded but deserved the win. As mentioned Bewick and Martin were very good and haysoos when Zorko gets the ball a buzz goes around the support, just bloody exciting. Oh (don't want to sound like a broken record) but Aish could be anything. Well done to all.

PS Those white jumpers are honking.

If you haven't already started editing the volleyball scene to include Greenie's and Zorko's faces, then you're just wasting everybody's time and may as well go home right now.

The high free kicks against us annoyed me the most. The dogs players dropped the shoulder and ducked in a tackle a lot, and the umps fell for it every time. Likewise they would dive at the ball, initiate contact by leading with the head into the tackler and get rewarded. At least we finally got a few of those crappy HTB decisions go out way, we hardly ever get them out way.

Just on HTB, i'm a bit annoyed at our players inability to do something with the ball when tackled. Everyone knows, that you will get pinged, prior op or not, if you get tackled and make no (fake) attempt to get rid of it. Yet our players keep getting tackled, and don't do the fake handball show for the umps. They have to be told to do this. Whilst i think it is completely against the point of the rule, it is the way they are paying it this year, we have to adjust to it.

While we are on it, can the umps blow the bloody whistle already in contested situations. I thought the AFL wanted to get rid of this hulking mass of players around the ball, yet the umps seem to be directed to avoid doing a ball (throw) up where ever possible. It is to the point where we are basically forming mini scrums, where a tackled player has a team mate borrow in to retrieve the ball and get away with it.

This, a thousand times this. Shits me to no end - all you have to do nowadays is drop the ball, why are we incapable of it!

I think we got done for HTB 4 times in the first quarter... fairly stressful, really (though I soon forgot about it after the second quarter)

4.00 mins left in the 3rd quarter.

I'm still in two minds about Mayes playing in defense. His composure, awareness and silky skills really shore up the backline, however he is quite the offensive weapon with that beautiful set shot and great overhead marking ability. Gaaahhh... :confused:
Just look at it as Mayes rounding out his game. Rich can push him back forward next year, a more complete player.

Still on a high. I've seen each of our wins live this year. Love it! Fabulous work by those behind the goals tonight, you guys really made some noise! I was with the Liiiiiiiooooonnnnsss chant group. We wished we were closer to the big group. Sorry blynd_freddie , we headed in to the function and I lost you. Next time!
All Good... I too was on a bit of a mission - think you may spot some faces in some of these? ;)

My summation:
  • 11 individual goal kickers!
  • Won the stoppages, clearances and contested possessions;
  • Endured 97 tackles;
  • Disposal efficiency 73% to 68%
  • We played with speed, urgency and an an entertaining brand of footy; and
  • We held on and won!
Leaders are standing up, game plan is taking shape and the kids are having a red hot go. We weren't going to win a game for the year in the eyes of some.

If we bring the last two weeks intensity and tenacity each week we will gain a lot of confidence over the year. We have drafted well IMO.

My post on page 1 of the game day thread before the match: "I will unfortunately be unable to watch tonight. Lions by 8 in my absence!" Look at that margin prediction. Lovely.
pfffttt.... where was your formula - you just guessed. :rolleyes:

At least I used "game stats" to prove mathematically why we would win, albeit I was 3 points out. :cool:

I like our set ups from stopages this year a lot better under Leppa. Especially in the forward half where we are producing shots on goal from it. It means we can rely less on needing to take marks inside 50, as long as we give a contest and bring ball to ground or get it over the line in the pocket. Likewise stopages up the ground we break away from a lot better than we did previously.

I think as a group we are doing the right things more often and players are switching on quicker and seeing the play unfold, knowing where they now need to be in our set up. We still lack some composure with the ball, and need to read the game better and play to the tempo, but we will get that eith more experience.

Real promisimg signs from this group.
