We have improved in each game. We played with better ball movement tonight in the wet than we have in the past 2 dry games. And when we did get a clean clearance and moved the ball, we were dangerous. I don't think we are far off. The fight and effort is there, we've adjusted to what has been thrown at us and we are figuring out how to get back to playing our brand of footy. Just need to be a little more clean and use the ball a little bit better. GC are still looked down on, but they have a great midfield, always have and clearances has always been a strong area for them. The fact we didnt' get killed in that area is a huge win. Our mids are still adjusting to Bergs as well, were plenty of times where Bergs got a clean tap but our player missed the ball or it went too far over their head.

We are working our way back into this season. We weren't that overly impressive early in the NAB cup either, we built on each game. We are doing the same in the season proper.

Defense is leaking too many goals from the small players. I like the move of putting Ash back in defense. He has struggled so far up forward this year, it was a great coaching move to put him back, get the ball in his hands. He is a damaging rebounder, and can play a lock down role in defense as well. Yeo and Golby both out of form compared to last year, i think we see both players as best 22 and are backing them in to work their way back. We are giving up too many goals from these two combined though. I think one of them will get a rest at some point if Doc can start banging on the door.

Thank you Vossy for making polka sub so everyone can realise the impact he has on the team ;)

I have my fingers crossed for a professional sub position for him. He looks a lot better when he's the only fresh one.

It's great to have a win, but we are still struggling to kick a decent score. Once again, we pretty much carried Polkinghorne (8 disposals with 50% disposal efficiency), McGrath to a lesser extent and a number of other senior players who had very quiet games.

Based on what I saw last night, if we played like that against North Melbourne next week, we will lose and lose heavily.

I think the tension in my neck and shoulders will take a few months to disappear - thank god we won.

Awesome debut by Sam Mayes, what a star he's going to be. Just needs to find an extra two metres on his kick and we would have been at least two goals up.

He didn't get the most possessions but I thought Rockliff did some great things.

I think the crowd was more 75:25 to them? We were on the bottom tier and seriously outnumbered, and their cheer squad end was almost all Suns supporters I reckon.

You realise he was the sub, right? And only came on part way through the third quarter?

In terms of actually going I think it is pretty difficult for someone who lives in Brisbane. I've been the past couple of years for the NAB cup and it seems so disorganised in terms of transport options and parking. Parking in that golf course is brutal and if the AFL wants to have a game start at 7.40 and expect all the Brisbane fans to catch public transport there they are insane. Getting home after midnight especially if you have kids is not my ideal way of spending a Saturday night at the footy. I think it is really important to build the game and Queensland and I try to support it in as many ways possible but it is probably easier to go to the airport fly to Melbourne and get to the MCG or Etihad than it is to Metricon! Which is a shame because it is really a nice stadium and I've enjoyed my times when I've been there.

Other than that, great to see the boys get a win. Sam Mayes looked great, 10 marks! Talk about spreading well! Pretty concerned with our backline, it seems we make mistakes that lead to goals far too often. I though Ash looked much better in the backline though and it seemed we did a lot better when he was kicking out. It seems we have decent depth but we need to figure out which combination is going to be most effective. I hope Polec is okay, I asked the lions on twitter and they said they probably wouldn't know until early in the week.

I would like to apologise to everyone sitting in section 202, we got a tad bit loud there (can still talk today though!). What a heartattack of a game - but a pretty good one with plenty of heart from both sides. Nearly burst into tears when Joel looked to go down, and did tear up when Polec hurt himself - I couldn't bear to watch the agony on his face, I just wanted to run down and give him a hug :(. Anyway, good to get the four points and good to remind everyone exactly who Queensland belongs to!!!!

Yep, and I think that 4 effective disposals in a quarter and a bit is not enough. I would much rather have seen a player like Karnezis or even Cornelius filling that role because the whole benefit of having a sub is that you can include an IMPACT player with fresh legs who can hopefully come on, unbalance the opposition and make a difference to the result of games. Having a dour plugger like Polkinghorne in that role is a waste of the potential offered to coaches by the substitute rule.

The substitute position should be worked by coaches as a specialist position, not as a consolation prize or last chance cafe for players who are on the fringes of selection for a full game.

Well, must admit to thoroughly enjoying that game! It might not have been a "great" game, but it had a hell of a good roller coaster ride & kept me on the edge through most of it.mlots of effort from both teams, some good footy, some bad footy, some ordinary umpiring, but shit, I enjoyed it.

That was one of the more impactful subs games that I've seen from a Lions player. He was clearly up and about as soon as he hit the field. He gave run when we had tired legs, put good body pressure on and picked up valuable touches.

You simply cannot criticise someone for low disposal efficiency on a night like that. The goal is to keep moving the ball forwards, not hitting targets with precision.

Really unwarranted and harsh criticism 3KZ. I am as frustrated as anyone by Polks dream run with selections but he played his role more than adequately last night.

I have mixed feelings on that - I like the idea, but managing a player's match fitness can be practically impossible if they only get to play a quarter or a bit more each week.

Out of our subs, saving for Josh Green last year, Polkinghorne's impact as sub has been one of the best ones in recent years done purely on the eye test. Eight disposals and a goal in 30% game time. I posted earlier that I could see him as a professional sub - an impact player with a license to throw his body around in the midfield, looking much better when he's fresh to everyone else's tired legs.

Should Zorks be worried? Haven't seen footage of this elbow yet...

The one he got a free kick against for?

Won't be reported.

If there's another one, it was before I got a chance to start watching so no comment.

Yep. It looked ugly. I think it would be cited, in which case, he has some concerns. Will he be sanctioned for it? Not sure, because the match review panel have been hard to read, as usual.

Reprimand at most imo. Wouldn't be surprised if it was insufficient to be reportable. Browny has more to worry about with the MRP imo... And Redden now that I think about it...

Me too Crimso.:thumbsu:

It there is a graph of "getting things right", we're still trending upwards. I wasn't as down on our performance as some. The competitiveness has returned which is the foundation of our play.

Our good players are getting back into some semblance of form. Best games of the season for a number of guys (Brown, Raines, Rich, Redden to name a few) who are all key players.

Mistakes are killing is at the moment. Gee we do some dumb things at crucial moments. Leuey's free kick in the ruck late could have been a match turner and was totally unnecessary. Halve the number of dumb, unforced errors and we take so much pressure off ourselves.

There's a bit of criticism for the way the Suns got through to the back of our zone. Fair enough too. But it is worth keeping that in context with the number of times we bottled the Suns up in their defensive half because our backs were pushing right up in the zone. The occasional fast break goal is to be expected. Nevertheless we should have been better, particularly when we played a spare man down back so often.

Brown and Warnock will probably be lighter in the hip pocket.

Redden, you talking about the shoulder to Ablett? I'm guessing a reprimand unless he has points already.

Perhaps you are right POBT. I notice a fairly solid line up of posters who I respect, like dlanod and the supporters who liked your post supporting the view that I am being harsh and I take this on board.

Perhaps I was just conflating my general frustration with the match with a previous view about Polks and where he fits in the scheme of things.

Noted one and all, noted.

Plenty of criticism being handed out to McGrath, Yeo and Golby and probably fair enough for a fair portion of it. Interesting that Adcock has escaped the BF wrath. I thought he was as poor as any of the others and there were a few times when the guy getting easily open was his man.

I hope i am wrong but for some reason adcock is reminding me of jeremy crowe at the moment.

Need
Hmm, maybe. Looks more and more like it when I re-watch it.

Need the clip to go longer. If he shakes the next persons hand then it was a clear airy and very poor form. Expect to see martin in the ressies next week if the case ;)

I personally found last to be a bit frustrating. My main concern, which hasn't been mentioned much, was our overall lack of pressure (both percieved and physical) on the ball carrier. Often, 4-5 players standing around as GC obtained and moved the ball whilst their pressure on us was great. also our lack if response to their runners over the back in the forward line, Harley Ben given free reign and who was on Matera? I'm usually fairly positive about things but all last night said to me was we still haven't clicked into gear yet.good to get a win!!

win is a win... but we have got a lot ov work 2 do... mayes was very outstanding debut.. hanley solid again.. well polkinghorne looks suited for a sub not full games.... well done browny solid effort... its like we wanted 2 lose that game it was like the gold coast vs tigers game last yr... they were wining clearnace from centre bounce with 1 less that shoulnt happen.. we gotta look hard at our structure in the middle we are geting flogged.. bring on nth go lions :)

Interesting that Mayes attended almost every single centre clearances in the reserves last week and then is used as a link up player this week and did so well with the adjustment.

Polec needs to dominate the reserves I feel before he gets another chance at senior level, players like Harwood deserve more of a go who are dominating week in and week out in the magoo's.

Would like to see Yeo and/or Golby given a rest next week for Doc and/or Harwood.
yeo and golby should be rested they have been ordinary
