The days of the knee jerk coach sacking reaction are largely over and have been for a long time. Look at the cleanout Richmond did before their flag - did a club review, replaced most of the staff except for the head coach.

Clubs go through reviews and assess, they don't act on tantrums any more. Although if anyone could do it it'd be Carlton
And 4 years after Hardwick started with a rabble he had them in the finals. We are 4th year in.

I’m not disagreeing with you, but I don’t believe playing four talls was the problem...
The problem is, if you go with four talls, your game style needs to accomodate four talls.
This possession game we played today was ridiculous. Especially given our inability to hit a target.
We switch for the sake of switching. A good side, especially a good side with four tall forwards doesn’t switch, wait, go back off the mark, chip, wait, switch back the other way, wait, go back off the mark, and chip again.

Teams switch the footy and GO! The switch is meant to throw the opposition defenders off guard. Not give them time to set up all over again.

Four talls means you move the footy quickly. You dish off to a runner, or you wheel and go. You make your decision on the run. You play a manic brand that puts the opposition in panic mode.

We chipped the ball around today like we were Hawthorn in 2013! But with none of the skill.

I’m happy with the big forward line. Harry, Charlie, and McGovern are all athletic, mobile, big men. Casboult, I can take or leave. But if we play a big forward line, let’s play footy that accomodates it...
i'm happy with a 3 tall forward line of one of them isn't casboult. playing 4 talls + a ruck was never part of the plan in the offseason. it's a panic move that bolton went to after being monstered by ryder and lycett vs port. casboult is there primarily as a back up ruckman which i think is a huge mistake given the limitations of himeslf and lobbe. its essentially 2 palyers who can't do anything other than ruck.

If we held onto the win today, no one would make any critical comments about the coaching, we lose from a fluke kick with 15 seconds on the Play School clock and, ooh boo hiss, it's mostly Bolton fault.

Silly as may sound, can't we digest the possibility we lost today due to bad luck ?

Get some perspective friends, a loss at the death knell of the game cannot be laid at the coach.

Too many posters blaming the coach and selection. I thought the game plan was excellent today, we identified their weakness in the air, it’s the players that didn’t execute both in their delivery of the ball inside 50 and the positioning of the fwds. But that was a very ordinary football team we played today and they were pretty shit too tbh so lots of thinking to do this week.

I don’t think Gold Coast are particularly weak in the air though. Their defence sets up reasonably well for the most part.

Sure you’ll get the occasional mis-match like McGovern v Joyce by virtue of having 4 key forwards, but the trade off is we really lacked (as has been the case in all 4 games) smart ground-level players to capitalise when the ball hits the ground. Gibbons, E. Curnow et al aren’t the answer here.

This.
People need to remember it wasn't that long ago Hardwick and Buckley were in the firing line. Look at them now. We need to stick with Bolts. Our time will come.

I never knew he was mind controlling players who kick inside 50... seriously get a grip, it’s emarrassing.

Bolton has 4 key forwards playing and you honestly believe he wanted players to kick to the small forward.

How about you blame the players for their inability to ******* think simple things through like kicking the ball to a players advantage.
So does Silvagni deserve criticism then?

Bolton’s confirmed that bombing it long is part of the game plan. He made an on the fly change to structure to push his keys further up the ground, without thinking of the consequences that would be involved when he's training his midfielders to bomb it long - the way you train is the way you play. We're training a lot of these snap decisions. Bolts mucked up, bad.

If you’re talking about the change he signposted at I think quarter time, pretty sure that was about the forwards presenting between 40-50 metres out, rather than encouraging the long bombs as they had been doing

Today for instance will have done Dow's development no good at all - it's human nature that he will likely be doubting himself throughout this week, and second guessing his options next week. That self doubt might be small, but it leads to more mistakes and the snowball continues.

Dow's disposal is already confidence-related. Have a feeling today's game will serve as a 'make or break' moment for him. Hope his mettle holds up.

I hear the calls for a more expansive game plan. But who do we really trust to carry this out with the ball in their hands? I’d come up with SPS, Daisy (excellent today), Walsh, and Weitering. LOB still shows promise with his delivery, but struggles to find the ball. I used to have Fisher and Charlie in the mix, but they’ve slipped back to the levels of the majority of their teammates.

Wow, you have FOUR men close enough to 2 metres tall and somehow the only guy to be in the best position is 173 cms. So, why was he there? Why weren’t the big boys there, why was it kicked there? Why? Does not make any sense. Disappointed beyond belief. Need a few days off... can you just imagine Bolton’s scripted presser. Keep sharp object away from him. Is that 3 from 36? The guy must have nerves of steel. Wow, wow, wow... so disappointed.., need to back away. I just can’t justify this. How? Why? I tipped a win and we got close by please the decisions the the last q were just. Uhhh I dunno...

Do you actually think the players care? They are content with shit, and getting their fat pay packets
I'm not sure how you know that.

I am going to say this again.
That is the first time I have seen all our young guys really hurting at the situation.
Mark my words it is a defining moment.

The players lost the game all on their own. They know it. They werent beaten, they blew it.

I would say that what the coach needs to tell them is not game plans. They have had that enough. Its to ask them if they want it enough to hurt physically so much in a game so they dont hurt mentally after the game
Because he has been their dad long enough now and they have to leave the nest.

Did you miss Setterfield having a laugh?
