The second quarter has been underrated a little bit, the Hawks tried so so hard to get momentum back and they set up really well and the boys did well to not let them get any flow. Good coaching
The coach has far less impact in a game than some like to think. Its up to the players out there. That said. Clarkson ripped shreds off his mob at 1/4 time. He was flumoxed. The Hawks went into a zone and we had no option but to try and counter that and did really well at the slower pace for a long time. They put two on Cripps and at this stage that basically makes us a man down. We were doing alright and had weathered their storm until we lost Simmo then Newman. Once we got two men down it was tough. A few little undermanned mistakes hurt us and yet these boys still found a second or third wind and had every right to take the points.

Our sets ups around stoppages with Kruzer in were winning us the game in the first quarter. Hawthorn just couldn't get their hands on it.

After that they came out firing and one the contested ball - then their coaches worked out our set ups around stoppages and adjusted for it - and we were flogged.

Hawthorn took their foot off and tried to shut the game down - thats what let us back in. They could have piled on another ten goals - Bolton had no answer.

He was totally, completely and utterly out coached by a master - and no game in the modern era could spell that more clearly than this one.

This game was 100% lost in the box. It really blows my brain the way people are throwing the players under the bus.

Looks like Hawthorn were getting smashed after the first quarter.

Alistar stemmed the flood and turned it around in the second. Then completely and utterly blew Carlton out of the water in the third and then went on to win the game.

It was a master class in coaching. And as has been the consistent issue with Bolton once his game plan is worked out for the day he is done and dusted.

Every - single - time.

Last week Bulldogs missed 15 shots in front of goal and were missing two KPP.

It wasn't that the players were "out on their feet" - or the "umps" - it was the coach. If it was a one off - you could understand it - but the win last week was the one off.

For you or anyone else who thinks that Bolton was out coached by Clarkson and that Clarkson made these so called game changing moves, listen to his post match interview, especially from about a 1 minute 45 seconds in:

Three down for a quarter and half - fantastic effort by those remaining on the paddock to firstly stay in the game and secondly come back and almost pinch it. Best game played all year by a significant margin in my books. I don't understand the expectation that defenders wont get beaten - opposition forward lines have a job to do - we lost because we missed kickable goals too often not because Plowman did this and Jones did that. Part of the reason we didn't kick the goals was inexperience and tiredness playing short of rotations and getting belted in center clearances when Kreuzer came off.

The thing to learn from Hawthorn is how to make life hard for direct opponents at every contest and every situation - Cripps could have used another big body around him providing a chop out or even better a huge hip and shoulder on his tagger - when Keruzer was playing in the first half - Hawthorn had no answer to midfield set ups - was beautiful to watch.

Frustrating to not get the 4 points but it was a close game - very close and maybe fair to say Hawthorn stole it.

I know right. Our coach is Jesus Christ - a religious figure. So blaming players makes it alot more fun considering our coach is religiously untouchable.

Or going missing when we actually win a game, easier to show up when things could suit an agenda

Mr Clarkson playing it much cooler than he was in the game. He knows its gonna be tougher for him from now on. And deep down he is pleased his old protege is on the right path. A little bit of begruging praise from him speaks volumes.

Plow gets bagged heaps, but he is also defended way too much by a sub set of supporters. It's weird.

He constantly makes horrific mistakes, not sure why it gets brushed over sometimes. He has zero footy IQ
He is going at 85.6% DE so far this year and has averaged 2.5 turnovers a game and 1.8 clangers while also picking up 7.8 intercepts.

I think your definition of "constantly" may need some work.

Think the 3rd quarter is a classic example of a young team being disadvantaged by the restrictions placed on runners.

People are saying why did Bolts change the way we were playing. It wasn't Bolts it was just the added pressure from being beaten to the ball (especially in the center clearances).

We went into our shells and Bolts wasn't able to change things up. Pretty sure he came down to the bench to try to get the message out. Really missed Simo's on field leadership.

When the supply turns into garbage like in the 3rd/4th, one almost wants McKay brought into the game as a 2nd ruck/midfielder.
McKay might be able to ruck when he builds his tank more. Maybe 2020 after another preseason.

His defensive work has been outstanding.

His decision making and execution has been attrocious.

He needs to work on a few things but you'd be silly to write him off completely

Carlton play a great first half and then feel they've worked hard enough and take their foot off the pedal.
Carlton still haven't got the message that to be a good team and win games ... you have to play 4 quarters, not just 2.

The 'honourable losses' continue .... Sorry, I'm done with excuses

Have a look at the season as a whole for all sides, not many the are playing 4 quarters of footy

Having watch the second half closely, I conclude it’s time to drop the LOB pseudo tagging rubbish. Let the kid run. Let him play. Get him running one end to the other and linking up. Christ we need it. I felt he played a super encouraging last quarter. Shacked seemed to be off him.

Let
Him
PLAY
Perhaps Bolts is wanting him to learn a defensive aspect of his game.

Didnt realise pointing to facts is an agenda. But I guess jesus is excused by facts as he is revered like god.

Stark difference in composure and strength between Polson and Cuningham too, and I always get the feeling something good is going to happen every time Cunners gets the ball. He’s really hard to stop once he accelerates from a contest, and if he does get caught he’s got the presence of mind and conviction to get himself out of trouble.
Cuningham is best 22 no question about it. Would love Dave to get a good run at it.

What about the countless missed tackles that lead to either a goal or a shot on goal.

I counted 4 in the second half off the top of my head.

Simply put, he's not strong enough for the big guys and not fast enough for the smalls, I've had doubts for a while now but yesterday they were expedited exponentially. The stat sheet hides what a truly horrid game he played.
