The second quarter has been underrated a little bit, the Hawks tried so so hard to get momentum back and they set up really well and the boys did well to not let them get any flow. Good coaching
Good point and truth be told if you watch the game again it wasn’t until 11 minutes left in the 3rd, where we were still 27 points up, that the wheels fell off after the Jones stuff up.

A minor point but did anyone else notice that Fish regularly found himself on his right hand side? Sometimes it was his own doing (calling for a handball). It would cost him time and impact his kick. He’s a great player but I’d love to see him develop his right foot.... not sure I’ve ever seen him attempt it actually.

Most of the best left footers struggle to kick on their right foot

I didn't see much of it but it looked like we went all defensive after we had a good lead and were a bit slow to act after the Hawks came back into it. We need to collectively see a good sports psychologist.
That's a really good idea. I feel like I need one after yesterday. Maybe the players should try it too

Fascinating.

Love your work as always.

Got the same question yesterday after the game as after GC; "should you be cutting vegetables now". Must have had a heavy follow through.

So wanted the win for the effort in game and during the week. And coz it was the Hawks.

Shouts out to Samo, kreuz, fish, daisy, Weiters, Jones, Walsh, Cripps.

Each week they're learning something that's gunna make them stronger. Look forward to seeing how they go about v norf.

BTW - the shepherding, holding and blocking off the ball to us was totally illegal yesterday and more importantly was allowed by the umpires.
That is what Hawthorn get away with every time and yet Clarkson is the 1st to whinge about umpiring. Flowering joke.

Won't even go to the center bounce non-recalls or the holding the ball / illegal disposal no calls.

Just devastated.

I avoided posting yesterday to let the emotion disappear and think about the game in a bit more of a pragmatic fashion. A couple of musings and opinions from my watching of the game...
  1. The loss hurts... but it hurts most because of our potential. Our play across the first half i believe to be comparable to that of a top 8 team and one that would worry others come finals...
  2. This to me says at our best we are super talented and we should be very excited as the future bodes well when we find consistent 4Q efforts
  3. Of course our 2nd half reflects a team bereft of players experienced at winning hence losing 3 of our most senior to injury didn't help when we needed on-field leadership and coordination
  4. Despite this, I thought our 4th quarter fightback was important in our development as we have shown this multiple times and is an important 'skill' to learn especially in big games
  5. It's hard not to every week think umpires hurt us but i actually thought this week was their least inept game for us this year... yes it was still frustrating but isn't every game? So i don't buy into the umpires having an impact although think Cripps next week will get more frees after the umps review their weekend.
  6. Plowman hate on this board is unfair as he makes the same amount of mistakes as every other player in the back 6 yet seems to be chastised for his... He often has the hardest roles of playing on the most damaging and creative forwards and gets pulled all around the ground including the last line quite often. He marks, kicks, tackles, scrags and if the commentary was a little bit more supportive i think others would feel differently about him.
  7. It's clear to see that each loss the players are learning and improving on what hurt them most the previous weeks, eg forward 50 entries
  8. We need to practice our zone more against teams who switch very well like the Hawks
  9. Really pleased to see how well we are running hard through the midfield and supporting each other with run and carry... i don't think the blues have done this at all in the last 20 years and i've often believed we are the worst hand-balling team... not so anymore!
  10. Our midfield has some serious evasive skills... Dow, Fisher, Walsh, SPS all seem to be able to dance when needed which is not a skill you can teach.
  11. JSOS now has the size and mindset to be an important part of our side - is not getting beaten due to his size and strength against most match-ups
  12. Newman needs to learn to lower his eyes as he rarely kicks short and opposition teams know this and expect his long kicks
That's it.

Do you still have all of your fingers?

Having watched the replay again a few things stood out.

Our defenders need to provide support for Jones. 3 times Jones was out bodied going for the ball and no one came in to support in the air (looking at you LP).

Mitch McGovern needs to do more. Doesn't contest in the air enough, doesn't put enough defensive pressure and goes to ground too much. Needs to be getting 15 times a game. Would have liked to see him shut down Sicily.

Need to stop hack kicking the ball into the middle of the ground. Caz doing it out of the ruck in the last was the one the stands out but there were others.

Just watching some of the Monday night footy shows. It hard to watch the emotional levels of the players after the loss and not assume that Daisy cares more than Murphy.

It just makes me think we can’t keep playing Murphy

Good point and truth be told if you watch the game again it wasn’t until 11 minutes left in the 3rd, where we were still 27 points up, that the wheels fell off after the Jones stuff up.

We gave away at least three goals by kicking backwards when we had the ball at half back...including that Jones one.

Ed had the ball at defensive 50m...why kick all the way to back pocket? It just invited the pressure. Jones did it once as well after taking a good intercept mark and i can't remember who did the other one.

I get sometimes going slightly backwards and sideways to execute a switch to around 30-40m out from the opposition goal, but we should really stop kicking all the way back to >30m out from their goal...we lose too much territory doing that and it invites pressure on ourselves...if nothing on better to go long up the line where we have numerous big targets.

Far out though the dogs game and first half of this game has been the best footy i've seen us play in a seriously long time.

That first half we dominated the clearances...and they weren't just hack kicks, we were linking with handballs and getting good, clean exits.

To think most of this is being done by players only 1-3 years into their careers...wow. We are going to have a dominant midfield very soon.
Walsh, Fish, SPS & Dow linking up very nicely around the contests. Was nice to see LOB kick 2 goals. Also high hopes for Kennedy, Setterfield and Stocker.

Our mids have already shown their best is top shelf, like top 4 material...we just need to do it for longer which will come with a few more pre-seasons.
