Murph may be hugely respected etc, but they would also realise he has the footy version of battle fatigue.

A huge shame for a champion who has done it tougher than anyone else there, but he needs to be honourably discharged at year's end and have his parade before he loses what dignity he has left. :'(

I love Murph for what he was given to this football club but I was soooo frustrated by him in this game. I know he still works hard and gets plenty of it but when the game was in the balance his lack of intensity draws your attention. While the rest of the team is striving for a rare win it looked like he was still cruising around in the JLT and the sloppy disposal errors off a step at critical times just reinforce that perception. Perhaps he is trying to be a calming influence when the pressure is on but it didn't look good and it didn't look like leadership. Come on Murph you are better than that.

I don't think many people understand how highly rated Murphy is by the young group. They absolutely love him and will do what ever he says without issue. As a mature player he is also only one of a few that can run a game out. He was poor on the weekend but has been more than solid this year.

Any discussions re: Retirement etc will be had at years end. At the moment we need him. Big Picture

Maybe it’s his choice and he is about club ahead of individual?

We don’t know but what I do know is he will do anything for the club and it’s people.

Very quick to write off a champion.
Had a poor game on Sunday, I expect him to come good.

People can argue that he’s not an inside player and that’s fine, but don’t care what kind of player you are, when you are a senior player you DONT Squibb your kick to avoid any contact!
What kind of an example does that send to the young vilnerable bodies of the kids who are expected to always put their bodies on the line??
Hmmm...

I think it's interesting that you clearly read my post and you clearly disagreed, yet you were loathe to reply to it and quote me specifically.

If you read my post, you can clearly read how the fact that playing inside has reduced Murphy to a shell of the player he could've been, and has skewed instincts that would've allowed him to play for longer and would've allowed him to be as good a finisher as he once was. Does this excuse him from what you stated in your post? Absolutely not. Does it explain it?

I don't think it's fair to have a go at someone for something done to them by someone else. It's akin to kicking a person when they're too injured to fight back. Some may find it edifying, but I do not. And Murphy has given years of his life to this club, and has worn hits that most in here could not have.

I agree completely, but how does a declining champion know when the right time is to go? For the club as well as himself?
I know we still need his experience, but I'd also hate to see his legacy tarnished by staying too long and becoming a liability. :'(

I think we are over analysing this a lot. Has been good first few weeks. Had a bad one. He will play until years end then I’m sure they will talk.

At the moment he has an important role he is doing well and I’m sure that is the focus

Thought I'd pop back for a look. What do i see?
Ploughman bashing, then Murphy bashing.
All players have down days and they all have clangers. A little more respect please.
I wonder whether you would make these comments to their face, probably not. Bloody armchair critics.
Barrack hard, but don't shoot them down like ferral dogs.
I hope you believe and understand, they are all doing their best.

We have so many youngsters to play in midfield now. It’s important to get experience into them now. The time is right for Murphy to move away from this position. Forward is best option for him and the team.

Not yet. Youngsters are still getting the time and Murphy is playing wing. Over the year all being well the young players will get more time. Hopefully Setterfield Stocker Kennedy will step up and Murphy will go forward with the odd run in the midfield.

Poor old Murph (and simmo). Gone thru the super hard times and we feel as though we owe them as the new dawn approaches. Only saw murph live once this year against the power and he got smashed repeatedly. 3-4 times had the nut, tried to evade, failed, got nailed and handballed into mid air resulting in a turnover. By contrast you've got SPS and setters coming thru the contests with bigger rigs and more confidence delivering the ball time and time again. Particularly SPS. He's carrying the number 5 jumper beautifully. Simmo is 50/50 good bad. He tries to get cute sometimes and you can see in slow motion when it's going to end badly. Ok these guys arent the only ones but it's going to be hard when another midfleider starts to really come on and murphs still getting smacked around. I think he'll slowly get squeezed out of the side when the younger guys start to improve.

The half forward/forward idea isn't a bad idea for Murph. But let's face it we are one decent goal sneak away from having a pretty darn good FWD line that can kick solid scores. Not sure where Murph fits in. Gibbons not sure. Fasolo will get another shot. We need to unearth Eddie Betts 2.0

Speaking of the FWD line. Charlie's teased us enough this year. It's time. Get him in. Wanna see him come in and stamp his mark. Big 'arry is showing him up at the minute!

We already have the youngest starting midfield in the league and they're getting plenty of opportunities...Murphy isn't hindering their development.

Most of our centre bounces start with a mix of Cripps/Dow/SPS/Fisher...Cunners, Gibbons and potentially JSOS in there a bit. Murphy and Ed no longer in there.
Murphy sometimes starts on the wing, as does LOB and Walsh.

It's a seriously young midfield group and are doing very well for their age. The potential is huge.

It is more than that though. A poor game every now and then is not what people are pointing out, it is the repeated poor disposal and bad positioning.
I dont want murph under the packs but I do expect that when he gets the ball he makes a good decision and more times than not get it the teams advantage.
Consistently he puts teammates under pressure or misses the target.
The fact that the juniors love him, he runs a lot, he bleeds blue and he has copped a lot of big hits doesn't change the fact that as a senior player murph is making a lot of errors.
He is not the messiah, but he has been a very naughty boy. Should he be dropped? I think he still has the opportunity to be a good contributer, sadly it's not what I've been witnessing consistently for some time now.

Yeah its rare for a Cripps clanger to result in a goal, whereas any of backs it can be a sure goal.

There were some awful non-calls against us

My pet hate is when the Hawks got tackled they placed the ball on the ground rugby style and its not incorrect disposal.

I noticed the Hawks practicing blocking while the defender behind marked prior to the match. I was think WTF at the time but obvioulsy Clarko's coffees pay dividends.
Lost count how many times Harry got blocked from the contest, just ridiculous how they keep getting away with it and people wonder why Impey was able to take those marks in the last quarter, not good enough from the umpires it’s either a free or it isn’t, consistency please. Poor Cripps gets donuts from the umpires when he gets scragged every bounce down, I mean cmon give the best clearance and contested player some help so he can play his game I mean they do it enough for Dusty, Danger & Fyfe but Cripps gets nothing.

Harry can be his own worst enemy at times

He needs to fight harder for the front position and if someone does drop in his leading space, he needs to make a statement early in the game

Yeah in the third he was getting out positioned and not taking marks...around that time I did read a post from you about him not getting into front position...and it made sense... in the last he started marking again

Our sets ups around stoppages with Kruzer in were winning us the game in the first quarter. Hawthorn just couldn't get their hands on it.

After that they came out firing and one the contested ball - then their coaches worked out our set ups around stoppages and adjusted for it - and we were flogged.

Hawthorn took their foot off and tried to shut the game down - thats what let us back in. They could have piled on another ten goals - Bolton had no answer.

He was totally, completely and utterly out coached by a master - and no game in the modern era could spell that more clearly than this one.

This game was 100% lost in the box. It really blows my brain the way people are throwing the players under the bus.

What an oversimplification. FMD we are not playing in a vacuum. We are at the mercy of the other coaches and they our coach. Give BB credit for our first half. If they work out our setups thats well and good and we react just like they did to us. The 3rd quarter was momentum driven just like our first was. the second quarter was the hawks trying to wrest that momentum from us - but still we outscored them. The 4th was us trying to wrest momentum back after the hawks dominant quarter. It is an absolute credit to our young team and the coaches that we were able to get ourselves back into a winning position and with a small amount of luck we could have snatched back the lead and won. i really dont buy your last 3 sentences that put our fate totally in the hands of clarkson who took his foot off- what utter BS.
Irrespective of the coaching, the massive amount of experience in their team and their senior leaders, enabled them to disseminate plays through the player group on field in the absence of runner directions. We did not have anywhere near the number of players able to lead in this regard- and of the small number we have- 2 were off the field in Kade and Kreuzer. The massive hole that Kreuzer left in our structure and our half back line sitting on the bench along with a severw lack of rotation options made everything that much harder- yet we nearly won

It wouldn’t be the same without Liam. He’s a bit of a cult figure. How great would it be, after all he’s been through, for him to be part of a navy blue premiership team!

But for Kelly you would do it. Jones would leave a big hole, but we do have Macreadie, williamson, Doc, godard, 2 silvagnis ,and a Kerr that can be used to help fill the gap.

Because Simpson makes one or two errors a game at most - generally none. Murphy stuffs up every second or third time.

Murphy's kicking has been a disaster since his ankle / footy injury - don't know why this is difficult to accept.

MUrphy is finished - his injury killed his game, its not rocket science, anyone thinking otherwise is blinkered with loyalty.

Life isnt ever black and white, but your constant dogma is getting very abrasive

Outside of the result, obviously, so much to be happy with. The first half was a step up again from the Bulldogs game. That was great to see as tome it showed a bit of hunger and purpose.

Unfortunately when you play Hawthorn, you’re up against the infrastructure of a Clarkson coached team in addition to the 22 players and I don’t think we were ready to answer the inevitable response from him. I guess that’s the next stage in the evolution.

One minor criticism of the coaching team - I think holding Ed off tagging an opposition mid who’s off the chain is getting to stubborn leavels. He’s one of the best stoppers in the game- it’s ok to sacrifice a bit of aggression if the players in there aren’t working hard enough defensively to keep the damage to reasonable levels.

Next year we’ll win that by six goals.

Final thought : I haven’t enjoyed watching us play this much in years. There was some great committed footy in 2016/2017 but to see them play this way fills me with great anticipation. Can’t wait to get to Marvel this week and see them go again.

For you or anyone else who thinks that Bolton was out coached by Clarkson and that Clarkson made these so called game changing moves, listen to his post match interview, especially from about a 1 minute 45 seconds in:

https://www.afl.com.au/video/2019-04-28/full-postmatch-hawks

The Dragon man will have to eat humble suphur. Clarkson admitting at 1.45 that he did nothing in 3rd quarter but tried plenty in the first half but it didnt work. that sounds like an admission that Bolts had out coached him in the first half. Egos got pricked amongst the very experienced premiership players and momentum was wrested back . But that momentum shift happens to all teams and in virtually all matches, so there is absolutely no shame for that to happen. Most would be surprised if an experienced side like the hawks couldnt engineer momentum shift once during a match. The negative was the length and extent of the reversal in the 3rd quarter. The positive is that we were able to make a comeback midway through the last quarter.
So many positives and a few negatives, Overall another heartbreaking result, but one that SHOULD give encouragement to everyone: supporters, players and coaches
