Some thoughts on umpiring.

  • Yes, the free kick count was lobsided.
  • Yes, unconscious bias is a thing and may have played a part in the frees today.
  • Yes, it can be frustrating at times.
  • Bolts is spot on that umpiring is hard, umpires are human, mistakes happen, and we need to accept this.
  • Bolts is also spot on that having someone like him potting the umpires is bad for the game.
  • If Bolts was complaining about things he can't control (like umpiring) instead of focusing on things he can control, he wouldn't be doing his job.
  • I hate, hate, hate those protected zone 50m penalties. If a Collingwood player had done what Cuningham did to milk that second 50, this place would have melted down. Not a criticism of Cuningham or the umpires, but that rule has to change.

Hi guys. Very stiff today. Elephant in the room with gorilla on top is the way Pies are umpired. This has gone on for about two years. Together with your game they have probably got 8 points this year handed to them by the umps.

Young Marchbank (who was playing really well) was mugged without the ball about three times in the last 5 minutes. One of the biggest stitch ups in a while.

Some great kids coming through. Best of luck rest of the year.

No, I didn't need to find a whipping boy actually, but if that fits your narrative feel free to parrot that bull ****.
Why are you so defensive of a player who is clearly lacking confidence and becoming a liability for the team?

I do judge him against his peers, hence why I posted...

Dow: 61.6
Brayshaw: 63.9
Rayner: 65.3
Cerra: 69.9
LDU: 80.4

Or if you want to compare him to SPS and Fisher's second years:

SPS: 67.5
Fisher: 66.3

Or perhaps Walsh's first year:

Walsh: 68

Or maybe Dow's first year:

Dow (2018): 66.9

Back in your box.

One thing you haven't taken into consideration though, is that Dow is statistically far more of a contested possession player than every other player you mentioned there. I'd suggest his stoppage appearances are larger based on that, and efficiency is always a lot lower for those sort of players.

Why do I feel this way?
We hear and see evidence we will improve this year we have better players coaches staff.
You know every other club does as well.

We are coming from a long way back a long way this club has gone through more turmoil and change to the way it works and treats others than maybe any other professional organisation.

We see our players getting us close in games, only to lose "confidence" in what got them there in the first place.(That will Change)

When we really are close to being a contending team as has been said in this thread umpiring will NOT effect results.
With Natural attrition from our list and a couple of recruits we will be damn site closer to really impacting this season.
We have 2 or 3? spaces to fill on our list is or are there any 25 year old ruckman out there who could maybe fill Kruezer's role if injured?
Secondly will mid year recruits have the fitness required to play AFL next week? (If not what really is the point?)

So subtle that i completely missed it, not that would be my first.

He cops **** from the opposition president, bucks had more to say than he did. Then makes excuses for said president? That he has a role in the media? Ffs he needs to grow a pair.

Anyway thats enough out of me.
Pretty sure Bolts has bigger fish to fry and doesnt care about dickheads from other clubs.

That was Plowman getting mugged. Couldn't take a trick.

Bolts may well seethe about the umps today in private, but he's hardly going to take a massive dump on them publically. Especially when his side is a young developing team that has won just one game so far and is still quite capable of losing a game all by themselves, regardless of umpiring.

I think Bolts and Co will be focusing on all the bits of our game that can and should be improved over umpiring decisions.

I still think the umpiring was utter turd burger and a disgrace, but that's me as a fan.

If you bring Teddy next time I will like your post.........

Also had an average pre season with injury. Like SPS last year he's working through it and the benefits will come.

I was excited seeing the makeup of the center square consisting of Walsh, setterfield, Fisher and Cunningham, setterfield and Dow on occasions rather Than cripps being the constant. The champ and our team need that support for us to continue to get better. May have be happening a lot in previous games just noticed it more in this one.

Definitely! That’s the beauty of a discussion forum.

Let’s hope for an equally good team performance next week - that we can agree on at least .

wholeheartedly agree!

I think if we bring that level of performance every week, we will go close to making finals. We should have been a long way in front at 3/4 time if not for some dodgy.....ummm, lets not re-visit that.

GWS will be taking us VERY seriously next week, as will everyone we face from now on. Next phase is to learn how to win, and win, and win and forget the underdog status.

(Then the arrogance can return along with the smug feeling of superiority :) )

Incredibly frustrated! I have had enough of honourable losses for this year. We cost ourselves with the last 10 or so minutes but it was obvious the umpires helped swing the momentum and had been allowing the pies back in the game in the third quarter.

Proud of the majority of the side but we NEED to start winning. I nearly put my fist through a wall when the goal was scored where Plowman was molested and the ball was clearly touched on replay. HOW WAS THAT NOT CALLED BACK? Then Plowman was molested 10 seconds later when De Goey scored again.

In saying that what a game from Crippa, he deserved to be the match winner and 3 votes locked away!
Breakout game of sorts for JSOS and Cunners.
Very pleased with Gov, Gibbons, Kreuz, Marchbank, Fisher, Daisy.
Dow was great in the clearance work but his disposal let him down a little.
Thought Stocker was brilliant especially for a second gamer in a high-pressure game, we have got one here. Let's just hope he is good enough so that we stop hearing about how we have given up a high pick.

Pies are overrated as anything. Their players went to water in the contest for most of that game. Needed the umpires to drag them across the line against 2 bottom teams now. Will be found out again when it counts!

Would be very surprised if it weren't at least discussed behind close doors.

I'd be telling the players they played their hearts out and got snubbed, but let's get better so the umps CAN'T hand the opposition the game.

Nice to have Setterfield back. Looked really energetic and classy at times. Can take a hit and make plays, really appreciated his game.
Fair dinkum, he just needs fitness + stay on the field in general. He can really play.

Not much congestion when kicking for goal. As bad as Casboult used to be.
