Geez tall poppy syndrome if I've ever seen it. A mate coaches a mob up the bush, won a flag last year and recently come under similar barrage on their BF thread.

Instead of being critical about who spends what, lets all take a look in our own backyards. Club's pay what they choose too, and pay players whatever they deem that players worth is to their organisation. Been happening for a long time now and will continue to happen down the track.

Take my old mob for instance. On Satdy 17-18 of the 22 has played juniors at Broadford. The majority of that side came into senior football over the past 4-5 years under myself, Bill Neilson or now Matt Finch. I remember one of my proudest days in coaching was in 2008 when all 21 seniors players against Mt.Pleasant had played juniors for Broadford. We didn't win and to anyone outside our club no one cared . . . but we sure did.

Time has now come that perhaps our local boys maybe aren't quite good enough to truly get to the ultimate due to a lack of certain types of players. I'd be disappointed for them lads if the BFNC didn't go and shop around and add some size and experience to the group in the next year or two and allow these 21-22 years olds a chance of playing finals footy. No one could begrudge the club after 4-5 years of "playing locals" if we now went and recruited a bit. The only non locals during my time were virtually via my circle of friends, so we haven't actually recruited for a long time now.

I said when we come across, that we'd battle to contest finals until our expenditure on players got near the $50k mark and I stand by that, although maybe that figure may need to be a fraction more in the current climate.

The better run clubs manage to generate coin to stay up for longer, whilst the lesser beneficial clubs load up for their crack at it every so often.

To me it's more jealousy towards Romsey and Sunbury at present rather than a genuine interest in payments of footballers in general. If you got it, spend it, if you haven't you gotta ask yaselves why and have a look within before pointing the finger at other clubs.
You can see who has been around footy for a long time and is well informed in what goes on in and around footy clubs! Great Post Doona!

Really who cares how much money clubs pay players, would rather watch gun players running around this comp than duds in the past. Shows how far this comp has come when players playing now used to kick 70 goals a year and can’t get a kick now, keep the money flowing guys, also its still great to see the clubs like Broadford and Wallan playing most locals.

Whether that is the final ladder or not, it shows that there is a big gap between the top five and the rest of the competition.

The top six was brought in by the old regime (sadly the same board) because of the competition's expansion from 10 to 12 clubs.

In my view, it should go back to the top five. There's no doubt the top five is the fairest finals system of them all. It rewards the minor premier better than any other system I've seen.

The only benefit of a top six is that it gives hope to clubs like Wallan, Kilmore, Broadford, Woodend-Hesket, Melton Central and Rockbank that they can still make finals, even though they'll probably be bundled out in the first week.

Sorry mate but their destiny is in their own hands I guess. On form I just cant see them winning another game outa the last 5. BUT !..... 3 out of those 5 ARE winable for the Broadford boys if they are able to lift just a little bit. Rnd 15 against Kilmore, Rnd 16 against Wallan & Rnd 18 against Melton are ALL 60/40 contests IMHO. So who knows ??? If they are good enough a Finals spot is there for the taking. :thumbsu:

Ha ha thats more like it, personally I'd like to see them say mathematically a chance with 2-3 to play, I know that means relying on other results but it would give the young blokes something to strive for in 2012 if they fall short.

That being said it could be all over by next Satdy night if the good Kilmore turn up to play ;)

It's said to be the best playing surface in the Bendigo Football League despite the renovations at the Q.E.O ... it would just about be better than any ground in the RDFL and the drainage is absolutely fantastic.. the Hawks will go from being host of an extremely muddy ground to a surface that would be near impossible to get that way.. the centre circle is a little rough, but its the centre circle.. what would you expect!

Round 14

With only 5 rounds to go we head into this weeks game full of anticipation, for the many sides chasing a finals spot, a win or loss with a big margin could put paid to the hopes of the season, while a good result could open things up, yes, there is a gap between 6th spot and the top sides, but this is the first season where this has occurred and lets not forget, finishing 6th is never just a consolation, finals are a different ball game and some of these sides need to set their sights on it now, moving to a new level.

Kilmore (10th, 4-9) Vs Riddell (3rd, 10-3)
Last Time: Riddell 24.10.154 def Kilmore 6.5.41
Big game this week for the Blues, last week they were blown out of the water in the 2nd half against the Kangaroos and cannot afford a repeat against the Bombers if they want to keep their hopes of a finals spot alive. With a poor percentage, they need to make sure they can keep Riddell honest and put some scoreboard pressure on. They have many players capable of scoring so there is no excuse for not being able to put some pressure on the Bombers. The Blues will be hoping that young Alex Desmond can return to the line up, his run and carry and ability to penetrate the forward 50 with his kicking is vital, especially if Shane Jacobs is playing mostly forward. Great to see Adam Goudge return to the park last week for the Blues, one of the unluckiest players running around when it comes to injury, hopefully he can provide the leadership and grunt that the Blues have lacked in recent games.
The Bombers are simply flying, the form team of the competition continued their run last week with a 50 point win over fellow finalist Macedon. Recruit Robert McMahon booted 3, while Mick Allen is averaging the most goals per game in the competition. The return of Grant Puxley has seen the Bombers back 6 shore up and they have multiple options up forward capable of booting a big bag of goals, Allen, McMahon, Baird and Ruffell are all great key targets and when you add Ross, P.Robertson and Scoble, most weeks those players will kick a winning score. The key to the Bombers remains their midfield, when they are on top the Bombers are so hard to stop.
Key Players
Kilmore:
Shane Jacobs, Brent Gordon, Travis Hede
Riddell: Mick Allen, Peter Robertson, Grant Puxley
Prediction: Riddell by 60 points.

Broadford (9th, 4-9) Vs Romsey (1st, 13-0)
Last Time: Romsey 24.11.155 def Broadford 7.9.51
Prediction:
Romsey win

Diggers Rest (4th, 10-3) Vs Lancefield (12th, 0-13)
Last Time: Lancefield 7.8.50 def by Diggers Rest 18.21.129
The Burra bounced back with a solid win last week against Centrals and will need a big win here to draw back some percentage on the other 4 sides in the top 5. Lefty could kick 15 here.
The Tigers continue to blood youngsters in what has been a difficult season, but to their credit they continue to fight it out.
Key Players
Diggers Rest:
Stuart Clarke, Kris Marsh, Cole Laurie
Lancefield: Glen Caton, Dan Rebbecchi, Phil Conway
Prediction: Diggers Rest by 80 points.

Macedon (5th, 9-4) Vs Wallan (6th, 5-8)
Last Time: Wallan 8.7.55 def by Macedon 13.12.90
The Cats will be looking to bounce back after last week's big loss to the Bombers to settle themselves down heading into finals. Good to see the return of coach Al Meldrum to the line up after looking like he might miss the remainder of the season a few weeks ago. It certainly makes the forward set up look much more solid if he and Ash Fleming are both up there. So last week's game was important if only for the run. With the way things are shaping up, the Cats just have to keep winning and winning well, they are currently facing a first week elimination final against their nemesis in Diggers Rest, so they will need to be in a position that the structures are set and balanced come the first week of finals or they could be knocked out by the Burra again.
The Magpies had a great win against Rockbank last week with a last gasp goal after giving up the lead late. Brad Regan the star booting 4 goals, but it was good to see Justin Collis in the best as he is going to have an important role to play in the coming weeks if they are to make finals, while everyone knows the importance of Galea, Robertson and Cornish to the make up of the Magpies, it is players like Collis, Adam Leggo and Regan that are going to hold the key. The Magpies hold a one game advantage in 6th but have the Rams right on their tail with a superior percentage, so a big loss here would hurt and hurt a lot.
Key Players
Macedon:
Jae Wilton, Ash Fleming, Darren Goodwin
Wallan: Matt Robertson, Justin Collis, Adam Leggo
Prediction: Macedon by 40 points

Rockbank (7th, 4-9) Vs Sunbury Kangaroos (2nd, 11-2)
Last Time: Sunbury 10.9.69 def Rockbank 9.10.64
The Rams just have to be disappointed with how last week went down, to lose that game has put a finals campaign in serious jeopardy and they will need to respond and respond hard in this weeks game. The loss to Wallan by 5 goals earlier in the year coupled with last week's 2 point loss has them firmly planted on the back foot and only a win against a top 5 side in the final weeks (Sunbury, Riddell and Diggers) will see them with a chance to play finals football and they longer they wait for that win the less likely it will become. All of the Rams best must step up to the plate this week and put in performances of leadership. One weak link will put paid to hopes of a win. Nathan Jackal, Jamie Zerafa and Matthew Krul, this week rides on your shoulders, while young guns Leigh Sobotnicki and Jake Armistead (who missed last week) are going to be very important.
The Kangaroos are travelling along very nicely, this week should mark the return of Darragh McGovern to the side and the midfield, while Full Forward Chris Meacham is in excellent touch. The Kangaroos have importance riding on every contest too, a loss puts them within the reach of Riddell and the loss of the double chance. The tall timber are still performing week in week out, Jamie Cuffe knows only one way to play the game, the bar raises every week, Leigh Fishenden will be a tough match up for Krul, while Brenton Sutherland has had an outstanding year down back. But it is the young talent that would have Dean smiling, Matt Leonard, Tie Cuffe, Mitch Strieff and Sutherland have all been excellent this year, while Dylan Wright is playing great football around the middle of the ground and up forward. This week's game is a big ask for Rockbank, they got within 5 points of the Roos earlier in the year away from home, what can they produce this week?
Key Players
Rockbank:
Jamie Zerafa, Nathan Jackal, Matthew Krul
Sunbury: Jamie Cuffe, Dylan Wright, Darragh McGovern
Prediction: Sunbury by 24 points

Match of the Round
Woodend/Hesket (8th, 4-9) Vs Melton Centrals (11th, 4-9)
Last Time: Melton Central 16.13.109 def Woodend 10.9.69
Tough week to pick a match of the round, but I go with this game because so much more rides on it than the others. The winner here puts themselves in a great position to play finals, the loser is out of the mix.
The Hawks are coming off a tough game against the Redbacks, and once again, as I was earlier in the year, I was impressed with the Hawks attack on the ball, only last week it dropped away in the 2nd half of the game. Was very impressed with the run and carry of young Alex Shipard off the half back line and Millard got plenty of the ball around half forward. The Hawks need to play Jesse Sheppard on the ball though. With Jake Owen away and Ross Waters not playing the Hawks really missed a forward target, so for their sake hopefully one if not both return for this game. Overall the Hawks had several regular players out of the line up so they were hard to gauge going into this week.
If any side knows about going into a game without several regular players it is Centrals who have done so for most of the season. But the thing they do have is a core group of players that bleed for the club, led by Captain Kane Bullen. The one thing you always get from Centrals is everything that group of players can give, week in week out, it has been a long season and things can start to drop away late in a year, especially a frustrating year, but Centrals continue to give their all and with finals still a chance you can be sure they will do so again this week.
Don't know much about the Showgrounds where this game will be played and it will be interesting to see the result and hear how the game went.
Key Players
Woodend/Hesket:
Jesse Sheppard, Ross Waters, Alex Shipard
Melton Centrals: Kane Bullen, Brett Payne, Justin Watkins
Prediction: Woodend/Hesket by 8 points

Good luck to all teams this week.... :thumbsu:

Interesting comments in this weeks edition of the Macedon Ranges Leader newspaper by Kyneton senior coach Derrick Filo.

Mr Filo says (& I quote) " I have seen some guys leave Kyneton and be very successful in the RDFL, but the reality is they were nothing more than scrubbers in Bendigo".
Well Derrick, I would ask the question, who are these "Scrubbers" you speak of ? Cause for the life of me I cant think of any "Scrubbers" that Kyneton have sent our way to become CHAMPIONS in the RDFL ??? In Fact, its quite to the contrary Derrick ! I recall many many players that have left the RDFL & been very successful in the BFL "mark 2". I call it mark 2, because ever since that blight on football up there - The Bendigo Bombers have been in existence,... well your comp' old cok just aint quite been what it used to be......... Now has it ??? In fact one wonders if Kyneton would have indeed prospered in '97 had it not been for the fact that the Pioneers were draining Bendigo of all of its young "GUN" talent ???
Ah but I digress.....numerous GOOD players have left the RDFL to try their luck in the BFL. And quite a few of them have finished up with the ultimate success, a senior Premiership ! Here is just three off the top of my head Derrick - Jason Allen, Mark McInerney & Leigh McInerney. And there is also a current trio of ex RDFL players that are killing it at present with Gisborne in the BFL, ie - Tom Waters, James Petran & Benny Sonogan.
But you know something ? Good players generally go, or are recruited to, Good clubs, with Good cultures. Perhaps thats why Kyneton either finish up with scrubbers OR turn good players into scrubbers ???
I dunno you tell us ???
Here is a bit of free advice Derrick if Kyneton EVER want to get out of the long term shit hole they now find themselves in,.....

1. DONT bag past players. (cause everyone is gunna be one of those one day !) Your current list may just be wondering if they will indeed be labelled scrubbers once they finish with your club ! &
2. DONT bag other leagues. How the hell are you ever gunna recruit quality players to Kyneton if those players are to be labelled scrubbers once they leave ???

And finally Derrick, have no fear, let me once & for all put your mind at ease that the healthy competition that the RDFL is, would NEVER actively seek or allow a cancer of a club like Kyneton to enter our competition. The LAST thing we need as a league is a struggling winless basket case of a club with a chronically flawed endemic culture that YOU yourself have so ably demonstrated with your stupid & ignorant public comments this week.

Good luck trying to turn your club around, looks like your gunna need every bit of it !

What a disappointment.. Some of the only guys that have performed at Kyneton were ex RDFL, Ben Talbot, Leigh Erwin and Dale Cuinik all played at Kyneton and were better players if I am not mistaken?? When Kyneton weren't the embarrassment that they are now...

Surely more than a few RDFL "scrubbers" would walk into that current Kyneton side. Isn't Chris Collins running around at Sandhurst? Surely Dermott Smythe will walk into any side up that way in 2012.

And for a while I was sitting back wondering if the league would offer them an out, now I'm thinking f**k em

The current Kyneton side would be possibly in the group fighting for 6th, at best... Simple...

Dekka is doing a good job at Kyneton this year by playing the kids but those comments were off the mark.

Tom Waters was named the number one ruckman by the BFL, made the VCFL rep squad of 40 after starring in the BFL's inter-league clash against the Geelong FL and is in the top-five of the Bendigo Advertiser-ASM Fitness Player of the Year leaderboard.

Chris Collins is also a key player for Sandhurst and although not dominating the competition, is a definite best 18 player who does a role week-in, week-out for the Dragons.

Filo wouldn't have seen an RDFL game for some time, I would imagine. Having seen Kyneton first hand this season, I can guarantee the current line-up wouldn't get within 10 goals of Romsey. That doesn't mean they are shot, though.

Dekka has been around long enough to know what it takes to build a successful side. He seems confident Kyneton is on the right track and I'd be happy to back him. I can't agree with his comments regarding the RDFL players, though.

Interesting thoughts there Omni. Heard they have a bit to spend next year, but we now know the RDFL teams won't be poached. And they can't blame the ground either. Had a look at it today while in Kyneton and it looks a treat. The Woodend boys might have to trade in their long stops and buy some moulded boots.

I gotta say mate I'm puzzled by your definition of "Good" ???
Kyneton lie stone cold motherless LAST on the ladder.... Winless ! With a percentage of 25.45.
Whats he doing ??? Teaching his players how to loose badly, or teaching em how to deal with loosing badly ? ........ Or both ???

Although copping hidings is far from ideal, he is teaching the kids to play football by giving them roles each week. Dekka is on the record as saying he could reduce those defeats by 8-10 goals each time by putting numbers behind the ball, but said it wouldn't be teaching the players good habits.

From what I hear and read, Filo is planning on using this year as development before focusing on results in 2012. No doubt there'll be a few recruits and some experience added in the pre-season. I think Filo thought it was pointless having a crack this year as Golden Square has a mortgage on the flag. The Dogs are one of the best sides in country Victoria.

Omni i have heard and had this discussion that many times over the past 15 or so years. It seems to people from rival leagues to the R.D.F.L that if u are playing in the R.D.F.L that u must be an inferior player that couldnt or wouldnt make the grade at bfl level. I have always found it like an unnecessary dick measuring competition. The fact is the R.D.F.L is a rapidly improving comp that has stability.great local rivalries and a game style all of its own.... Yes the bfl is a stronger comp, but each comp provides its own challenges. Barring three grounds, every R.D.F.L ground is relatively small. Most sides in the R.D.F.L still have numerous players that kick chase. Meaning that to get a kick in our league, a lot of the time you have to beat 8 to 10 players to achieve that at a stoppage. Not many players i know that have DROPPED DOWN from the bfl would be comfortable doing that. the fact is the R.D.F.L is a good standard of local football and i think a lot of the outside leagues deliberately rubbish our standard because deep down they are ENVIOUS.
Also i have no doubt whatsoever that NUMEROUS R.D.F.L stars would easily line up in most or all bfl clubs
Not to forget the fact that i also beleive that the top R.D.F.L sides would flog the lowere bfl sides.
But this debate has been going on for many years and will continue to go on. All that matters is that all R.D.F.L clubs and players stand proud of the clubs and the league they represent, while the rest please themselves in a LOPSIDED comp going knowhere:eek:
