I think he's written himself into too many corners, it's too much work to finish it now and wrap everything up in a way that's going to make people happy and make sense.
It's a shame the tv show turned into a steaming pile of sh*t and the book series is never going to finish. Not much of a legacy to leave.

I think anything geeky with a massive rabid fandom ruins the end product if the creators engage too much with the fandom.

They end up writing for the fandom and lose track of their own vision, everything becomes reactive.

I don't like it when people knock on my door, it means they want something, usually money

Legacy will be much more impactful if he doesn't finish it. An eternal "what if". I think he's on that train now.
If that happens I hope they pull a Robert Jordan on him and get Sanderson to finish the series. It'll been done, brilliantly, inside 2 years the way that man writes.

What's in it for GRRM to finish the books? He's already super rich and he'll just get smashed online when he does release it because the expectations are so high.

And the Venn diagram of the people who would rip into him for finishing it in a way that doesn't meet their expectations, and the people ripping into him now for taking his sweet time, would be a circle.

I know he had a terribly unhealthy lifestyle in his playing days (and probably not much better afterwards) but I honestly would not have picked him to die young.
