How much Medicare levy surcharge you will pay

The Medicare levy surcharge (MLS) rate of 1%, 1.25% or 1.5% is levied on:

  • your taxable income
  • total reportable fringe benefits, and
  • any amount on which family trust distribution tax has been paid.
We use a special definition of income (called income for MLS purposes) to work out if you have to pay the MLS and the rate you will pay. This income is different from your taxable income.

You will not pay the MLS if your income is less than the base income threshold, which is:

  • $90,000 for singles
  • $180,000 (plus $1,500 for each dependent child after the first one) for families.
You can use the Income tax estimator to work out your MLS.

There's an income threshold where the Medicare surcharge kicks in (combined income for couples). Once you go over it, you're up for, I think, 2% extra tax. Generally, the insurance premiums will be less than 2% of your income.

Never really factored in that it made so much difference my income was now considered alongside my wife's.

Her parents will be pleased, they know they don't have to hide the matches when Sam is home.

The amount she makes, she should have set them up with one of these babies:

Nothing makes lighting a scented candle more badass than using a laser.

Everyone seems to be making light of the alleged comment, but I don't think we should be condoning racist language in any way. Imagine the roles were reversed and the officer called Kerr a stupid darkie b*tch.

Is it actually illegal to make racist comments in the UK, by the way?

I understand it’s a hypocritical position to take but calling someone a stupid white bastard is not the same as replacing white with black in that phrase. She shouldn’t have said it but taking it to court just seems such a waste of time for something quite trivial

And I think the UK has some quite draconian hate speech laws that are enforced way more selectively than they should be

Racism is racism as far as I'm concerned. If we have different rules for one, compared to another, based on skin colour, then guess what that is?
