Say it ain't so, Sam

No details given so it’s impossible to make any sort of judgement

I will say I’ve seen some pretty spurious charges laid by the Metro police in London in recent times. Their racial vilification laws are more wide reaching than here as well

Her family does have form with taxi drivers though

You think she was set up by Big (Yellow) Taxi?

That would be New York with yellow taxis

Maybe she got in one of those FakeTaxis I’ve heard about sparking a dispute on what constitutes payment

Private health insurance...at what point is it just not viable.

With the latest % increase our familys private health will cost near $500 a month

We investigated switching insurers, even reducing the level of cover. But given our family situation we kind of require the plan we are on, unless we are open to paying a $750 excess for hospital admissions.

Given the amount of surgeries.ive had the last 5 years, plus the usual kids stuff (grommets, tonsils etc)...it probably does not work for me

This plus all the other insurances (car x 2, home and contents...its 9 to 10k on insurances a year alone.

I gave up on health insurance in the mid 90’s when I moved to Broome - there is no private hospital there and if there was a significant enough issue you got flown to Perth. So private health cover didn’t really help

When I came back to Perth not quite 10 years ago it wasn’t affordable for me

Whilst there I had two major issues - cancer that I was operated on in Derby for and flown to Perth for later radiotherapy and follow up visits annually for 5 years. And a broken ankle that I was flown to Perth for

Kids just had the usual kid things but private might have helped with dental a little bit

We went through the public system for our 2 youngest kids born in Broome and there was no difference between the treatment there to what we had with private cover in Perth for our two oldest

My wife had a small surgery a few years ago that might have been dealt with a bit sooner if we’d had private cover

Overall I’m massively in front not having had private for the last 30 years. Possibly to the tune of $100k

That said I’ve probably been lucky that I (and my family) haven’t had anything serious come up which makes it easier to say it hasn’t impacted me. So my story might not be the same for others

It’s a lot of money making it increasingly hard to justify

If you do decide to cancel I’d suggest putting an equivalent, or close to it, amount away in a separate account to use for any medical expenses

If I didn’t have private my eldest with her shoulder surgery and middle ones dental surgery plus braces, I would have been absolutely ****ed. Zero help from their mother. And the savings with constant physio is also very good. And it’s constant.

I can say it definitely works for me at this stage of my life.

Turns out that ambo trip for my daughter to Fiona Stanley after yeeting off the trampoline head first onto the pavement was not covered by HCF as she wasn't on our policy.

We had that situation unfold when my son got ill on a family holiday and he was taken by ambo to Busselton hospital, so intent to avoid that $1000+ mistake again my wife insists she called HCF to update our policy and change our extras cover.

After calling HCF daily for a fortnight or so, HCF claimed they could not find the voice recordings of the phone calls made in 2022, and offered to backdate our policy to before the latest ambo ride, including our daughter on the policy. Saved us $1150. They had no obligation to do so, could have just pointed to the paperwork and said she's not covered.

Still not sure why they took this route but we do pay a lot for extras and quite literally never claim anything. No optical, no dental, son no longer goes to OT, we don't get remedial massage and have long stopped using chiro. Maybe they decided they've made enough coin off us to cover it.
