True that. Back then there were quite a few big wingers and tough wingers too...Neagle, Dipper, Hawkins, Matera, Mainwaring....but Rowdy and Daz and then Graham Wright lost nothing by comparison. Is it me or were 1:1 duals more eagerly awaited back then? I know we waited salivating for Dazzler to "beat up on" (figuratively speaking of course) the pretty boy wingers like Anderson or Micky Turner.

If 42 comes back (and I hope it does....it's been long enough now) I can only see Grundy in it from the current bunch. He has the attitude (and the fortitude) to carry it off successfully. Marley I see more of a 26er.

:thumbsu: re: one on ones Robroy.
Would love to see Grundy with the 42 and thought Marley was also the obvious choice for 26 the moment Johno retired.

Whilst Marley is tough and never say die Daz had a real presence on the field and I can see that in Grundy's game not just now but in the 2 national championships as a junior. Can't wait until he grows. :)

Grundy has that same INTENSITY and MENACE about his attitude on the field and with the workload he is putting himself through at the gym and on the track I expect further improvement barring his overdoing it and aggravating his back again.

Seriously what was to gained by posting this in thread where the Op Axl was paying tribute to a great of the club.

Look I read that & thought, myself I wouldn't say that but it is a part of who he was.

Wow, it's amazing how fast 22 years has gone. I was 19 when it happened and it was one of those times where i can remember exactly where i was when i heard the news on the radio. Absolute legend of the club.

Absolutely it was part of Daz's makeup OA.:thumbsu:

Many of us have made poor decisions in our lives without suffering the ultimate.

Whilst factual I just thought the comment lacked sensitivity (especially the name calling).

He stuffed up, has passed on and I see little benefit in raising the issue 22 years on. If there were positives in doing so then I would be all for it.

If I'm reading your post correctly you stated you thought about it but through better judgement you felt it was not appropriate to post.

If so that's where I stand on the matter.

As for pants. . . well the strongest accolade I can think of is this.

Whenever the ball was in dispute or running loose and within cooee of pants he used to get this strange red glare in his eyes and take off at a million miles an hour with that bustling, shoulder bunched run. Opposition players would start off with full intentions of getting the pill until they saw pants and read that red glare in his eyes. Now I'm not saying they took short steps but they were certainly thinking of other things than the footy after reading that glare

time for the video again. this time take very close attention to mainwaring, where he was initially, where the ball was, and where he stopped dead. didnt want the ball cos it meant challenging millane. didnt want to get hurt.

Lol vj a distinct case of divided loyalties ;)

Getting the pill at all cost was being loyal to the team
Getting in pants way at any cost was NOT being loyal to wellbeing.

I was at work at the time, doing some emergency repair work at the Broady Telephone exchange (used to be a PMG technician) when the boss stomped out and told me I had a telephone call (NOT happy)from my sister who was in tears. Sis - who I had just spent a wonderful GF day with told me. Once again boss NOT happy with me half demolishing his desktop stuff and ranting like a mad bikie.:confused:o_O

Went out that night with a couple of good mates who got me home safe - I don't remember much, got royally pissed :(

For those who want the 42 to come back.
Please, no, no, no.
The simple returning to the field of the 42 would diminish the legacy of the great man.
The fact that 42 is never seen on the field of play is a topic of discussion for all the new generations of Collingwood followers.
Questions are asked and answered. The legend grows.
But the 42 out there again for some rookie/ low draft pick and the legend becomes diluted.
42 is a low number. It would only be assigned to newbies, players who may or may not make the grade.
It would be disrespectful.

Plenty of other champion Pies have had their 'legacy dimished' with their number being put back into circulation... Not sure why Millane deserves more than these.

And I would argue that it does nothing to diminish the legacy anyway - possibly even the opposite. Not many would blink an eye at not seeing a 42 jumper run around, but for Collingwood if it were back on the park, there would be many a reference to Millane.

Yeah, the 1v1s from that era is something we will never get back (with rotations).

1990 GF had so many of them...
Wright v Long
Millane v Anderson
Kelly v Van Der Har
Monky v Madden
Shaw v Watson
Francis v Ezard

even Christian v Salmon was a good one (for that game only, though)

Umm...you may have forgotten a few

Brown V Daniher? The matchup of that GF for mine. When Rowdy came back on...it was Gameover!
Crosisca v Hamilton
Daicos v Bomber Thompson!
Banks and Kerro v just about everybody else!!
Charlie Manson v himself!!! and the Race wall

Poor petal. Sorry for upsetting you.
Darren was a ****wit for getting behind the wheel in his self inflicted condition. That he only lost his own life, and not that of a sedan full of a family, is a miracle.
I have no doubt that the OP has had a bigger loss than just us fans.
But no good sugar coating what is the simple truth.

We all loved him, we all miss him, we all mourn just what he could have been in his football life, and his post football life. But his demise must be held up to all as an example of how fragile life is and how ones own actions can have devastating consequences.

I'll not back away from my judgment of one of my hero's. He stuffed up big time and was lucky that only one life was lost.

I agreed with your original post but this is just over the top. Calling him a ******* says more about you than it does about him, and as for lucky he didnt kill a family, wasnt the incident in the early hours of the morning? Hardly a miracle there wasnt a family in a sedan involved

Black_White is right in my opinion.

On the field, Millane was a very good player, but off the field he is not someone who should be worshipped. We criticise Heath Shaw for making a $10 bet - yet we turn a blind eye to Millane after getting in the car with a blood alcohol of .344 and obvioulsy driving recklessly.

Don't be mistaken - he was obviously a terrific clubman, and what happened to him was a tragedy, but let's make sure we look at this holistically. What he did was against the law and extremely dangerous, and if someone else was involved other than just himself he would be a villian of the highest order.

Does the law change when it is 4am just because there are fewer family-filled sedans on the road?

Agree with all points raised JB.

There the facts there's no hiding from that and you managed to present them without the unnecessary name calling.

I'm not upset one iota, your entitled to your opinion like everyone else.:rainbow:

I simply questioned what was to be gained by such name calling.
Simply the right to worship the unvarnished truth without regard for the consequences. Some people are like that, we can always keep our BF experience pollution free however by simply hitting the ignore button.

Not disputing that he died as a result of his own stupid actions. I for one have also gotten behind the wheel when drunk and Im grateful that everything turned out fine, so no judgement from me. Just saying that insulting him and saying he could have killed a family is a bit over the top

Only as over the top as insulting any extremely drunk driver who could have equally killed someone. If you can't call Millane a bloody idiot, then you equally can't call any drunk driver a bloody idiot, and if it is over the top to say that Millane could have killed someone, then it is equally over the top to say any drunk driver could have killed someone. It doesn't make it any better that his was at 4am is all I am saying.

I loved Millane, but I think he deserves to be called an idiot, and I think suggesting that his direct actions could have killed someone is not at all over the top.

He definitely could have killed someone for sure, my main objection was that the guy said he could have killed a family. But I suppose thats not a big difference anyway
