Mike Sheahan isn’t exactly a bastion of progressive thinking either…This is the problem with society today … people see a click bait headline and just run with it, having little or no knowledge of the actual facts.
I listened to that Podcast that started this Winmar settlement, did you ? Sam Newman, Don Scott and Mike Sheahan were talking about the day when Nicky Winmar raised his jumper and pointed to his skin at Victoria Park. Mike Sheahan, as leading journo of the day, was musing that most people if the press box thought his actions were about the heart they’d shown in winning at Vic Park, and wasn’t related to a stance against racism.
Sam Newman was barely even involved in the conversation. There was nothing racist, nothing controversial and nothing sinister. It was just honest discussion about how the thoughts of many in the media at the time was it was not related to his skin colour and was related to the heart they showed. Newman wasn’t driving the conversation and said nothing at all to denigrate what happened or question anything one iota..
Anyone who listened to the Podcast knows it wasn’t racist one single bit.
Then Winmar got up in arms as he probably assumed they said he was making it up, or had questioned his motives … which is not remotely what happened. But on the back of the Goodes saga and other racist issues within the AFL at the time, Gil and the AFL got involved and it ended up in mediation with Newman paying a fine.
Please please just listen to the Podcast and report back based on facts, not on headlines. You can argue all you like about other incidents, but this one was an absolutely disgraceful whitewash based on absolutely nothing except virtue signalling by the AFL.
Listen to what started it and you’ll be amazed at how it all blew up from innocent discussion driven mostly by Mike Sheahan about what the media pack ‘thought’ was the reason behind the pointing at the skin on the day it happened 25-years prior.
