You don't get removed the Hall of Fame for having contrarian views and spouting inflammatory opinions.

I disagree with what Sam has said about the Welcome to Country but my official position is this. Sam Newman has contrarian views. He spouts inflammatory opinions. He is being hurtful to some, but I don't think he is being hateful.

For a bit of background Sam made some comments about George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement. Back then I disagreed with what he had to say, but I was against his erasure from club records.

I disagree with him strongly. His politics are not my own. But I don't believe he is an actual ethno-supremacist or any kind of an ethno-nationalist. He is, at worst, willfully blind to a lot of cultural sensitivities. But that's it.

He just doesn't care.

Personally I don't think Sam should be removed from the Hall of Fame.
It is a football Hall of Fame, not a politically correct one.

Sam is a relic and gets called a fossil for good reason.

Whilst I don't agree with all his views, he is entitled to have them.
Whether he should be entitled to have a platform to air those divisive views is a different debate.

Barry Cable was removed, as what he did was disgusting and we know the situation, so I am not going to bring it into this thread.

Unlike Cable, some good can actually come from Sam's comments, as it creates discussion and the more these people are called out, the more it is proven that as a society, we are getting better.

Sam and fellow ancient relics are becoming more extinct and as they slowly die off, so will their views.
We are heading in the right direction and strangely enough, people like Sam are the necessary evil, that will get us there.

He wasn't cancelled due to a mob. He was cancelled because the communications minster Malcolm Turnbull ordered the managing director of SBS to fire him because of his political views. He was fired the next day, and the whole thing went to court. He got paid out in a settlement.

You won't find a clearer example or being cancelled than having the government call your boss and make them fire you.

On a seperate note, i have sat on many conference calls and zoom meetings. I have often wondered when the guy does the welcome to country ceremony over the link, is it offensive to indigenous Australians who are in their different nations. So for example i am in Gunai Kurnai country, if they are gonna do it, should it be all respective nations rather than Narn etc?

Pretty easy to work that out by acknowledging that we are on many lands based on where people are. Not a big deal

These idiots love false equivalencies. Someone who is questioned about their views in a robust democracy (“cancelled”) somehow would be placed on the same level as your legitimate and concerning real consequence for someone just doing their job.

It kind of equals “leave him alone and let him say whatever he wants without consequence” - in other words he can exercise his freedom of speech but people reacting to him can’t. A petition to outcast or delete someone's past achievements is not free speech, its a form of cancelling.

If it was free speech, there would be criticism on Newman's view, or arguments against his view.
