Let's wait to see how some of these blokes go when their teams are taken seriously.

Merrett in particular hasn't really played a proper game when the opposition puts some time into the team and isn't already planning for the following week.

Not saying he is overrated, but his big test will come in 2017 when he isn't the main man.

That just isn't true.

Sides like Carlton and Brisbane would have put plenty of time into Essendon not to mention the fact Merrett has had plenty of impressive games before the 2016 season.

Sides like Brisbane and Carlton were more interested in their own football, I can't imagine they were too worried about him.

If you start winning some games in 2017 and he continues on his good form, he will start being attacked and tagged, and then we will see how good he is.

Comparing him to Bont and Cripps who are already the focus of the opposition is disingenuous. He really isn't playing the same sport as them at the moment.

If I had to choose between Ben Brown and Aliir Aliir I think I'd take Aliir Aliir. Brown has more runs on the board but Aliir has way more potential IMO.
I disagree. Ben Brown is extremely underrated... though he is also extremely difficult to look at at, cringeworthy in fact. Reminds me of Carrot Top!

In the right environment, I believe Brown has a bigger upside.

Carlton tagged him in there first game.

In your fantasy land where sides supposedly aren't bothering to plan for Essendon at all than they aren't exactly worrying too much about Carlton either.

Not to mention the reverse argument is just as valid. ie Merrett copped more attention than most because he was on of very few gun players in his side.

Carlton don't have a tagger.

And if they did, he would have been on Zaharakis.

Most people I'd say. If both were on the table everyclub would take Boyd first no doubt.
Why because Boyd had a few decent games surrounded by the premiership side? Yes Boyd has the potential to be a great player, but Merrett proved himself this year with little to no protection from more experienced mids. He had over 600 disposals this season, Boyd kicked less than a goal a game.

The point you miss is that its much easier to find a 600 possession seagull than it is to find a young CHF to build your team around.

Less so surrounded by a premiership side more so b+ level side surrounded by premiership goliath Toyd.

Lose the ignorance and try to understand what he is saying. Merrett is a really good player, but there are many others like him. There are not many young CHF's you can build sides around, bit like Daniher once he learns how to kick.
That poster in particular is just a shit talker. Merrett iirc is the youngest AFL player to reach 600 disposals in a season. Boyd hasn't even come close to producing the same level of consistency and influence. Also Daniher>Boyd every day of the week.

This Tom Boyd love is getting a bit ridiculous.

He has demonstrated nothing to even remotely suggested you can confidently build a side around him as a CHF. I mean shit, he only kicked 1 goal in the previous 7 games before the grand final.

He should have won the Norm Smith. What part of that is so complicated for you boys from Tulla.

In any case it's Essendon hate > Tom Boyd love.

He's looked good a couple of times but it's really been as a ruckman/follower more than a CHF

You have some serious bias towards Merrett obviously and aren't considering others points of view. Merrett on output is of course better than Boyd currently, but that isn't the point of the draft. Teams often draft for potential and ceiling, and it's not hard to understand Boyd has more upside than Merrett.

Based on draft value not current output:
1). Bontempelli
2). Cripps
3). Boyd
4). Merrett
5). Lobb
6). Kelly
7). Brown
8). KK
9). Barass
10). Billings
