Ricciuto to lead in 2007
11:00:01 AM Fri 5 January, 2007

Mark Ricciuto will continue as Adelaide's captain for a club record seventh season.

Ricciuto, who took over from dual premiership captain Mark Bickley in 2001, will lead a reduced leadership panel of five for the 2007 season.

The leadership group – elected by the players - also includes Simon Goodwin, Nathan Bassett, Tyson Edwards and Brett Burton.

Burton, 28, is the only new player on the 2007 panel although he was in the leadership group in 2005.

The 2006 group included eight players. Missing from last year are Ben Hart, who was cut from the playing list at the end of the season, Andrew McLeod, Jason Torney and Ben Rutten.

I don't like the fact that Rutten is no longer in the leadership group. With Burton back in there we are going backwards in that department.

Its all fine and dandy to let the player's 'take charge' and vote for their leaders, but how does this help to develop our future leaders?

Agreed, Mc23.

Aside from Burton, our leadership group are all 30+ at a time when transition and continuing to wean ourselves off the fab-4 reliance is all-important.

Weird.

Maybe Rutten and Craigy have sat down and discussed taking a back seat for him this year so he can observe the others.

Viewing things from a different angle after being in the leadership group might be a good thing.

Does anyone know the voting process?

Totally irrelevant IMO which players are officially in the leadership group.

The likelihood always is though that such a group will come from the more mature senior players because they have been through it all and know what it takes to be a leader.

Younger players like van Berlo show that they will be there too one day by improving year on year and taking leadership upon themselves unofficially. Similarly with Rutten.

The 5 that have been elected are all top players who set great examples to the younger players to emulate.

A storm in a teacup about nothing IMO.

I know exactly where you're coming from Mac, it's just I would've thought that with Craigy's emphasis on the different groups - "backbone", "crushers" - and players graduating up to relieve the workload and reliance on the usual suspects, we would've seen a couple of the younger players with some runs on the board step-up to the leadership group, rather than be excluded as Rutten has.

I'm a bit disappointed that Macca is no longer in the leadership group. I think he has wonderful leadership qualities, he was co-captain in the international rules series a couple of years ago and captained the aboriginal team that played in Darwin a few years ago...On the other hand, I'm glad Brett Burton is back in there :thumbsu:

weas voted by the fellow players... so its highly unlikely that a younger player with the exception of Rutten last year getting in...

“That’s been one of the real improvements in our footy club, is now we’ve got so many players who are leaders. And while they may not be in the top five of the club we certainly could have 10 or 12 guys who are really trying to be leaders at the club and that’s what made us a stronger team and a stronger unit. And that should continue to develop even sharper in the next few years.”

Unconfirmed reports suggest that Tyson Edwards DID NOT vote for Macca. :p

saw the channel 10 news tonight and they were interviewing craigy. he said that the players actually step in front of the playing group to give their votes and reason why they have voted for a particular player.

I thought this was a fantastic way to vote. :thumbsu:

Its a worry though that Rutten, Thomspon etc didnt get a gig. 2007 is Roos probable last as Skipper (and possibly player) and there doesnt appear to be an obvious next in-line to follow the great man. Surely having Rutten (or Thompson, VB) in the official Leadership group would help hone new leadership skills through mentoring, being exposed to additional responsibilities etc.

At this stage it seems to me that Goodwin may become a fill-in 'Mc Guiness type' skipper for 2008 (2009) before a young guy comes through. Not ideal

Thats really the next question in the phase then, who will be the next captain of the Crows, as we know it will be Roo's last season as captain, and maybe player. So who gets the gig after Roo, is it Goodwin like u have suggested, a temp for 08-09 seasons, by that time, he may be getting to retiering stages. Or do we go for Van Berlo, or Benny Rutten.
We all know it will either be Truck or Thomo as Crows next captain, but just outta interest, who?

You are suggesting next season we will have a new skipper, i'm not sure if Thompson is ready for that at this stage. His onfield discipline will need to improve for starters.

Exacly, thats why many people believe Ben Rutten will be the Crows next captain. I believe that Goodwin will be captain after Ricciuto has gone, for about 2-3 years, but after that who really gets the job. Rutten springs to mind, an All-Australian in just 30+ games, un-believable acheievment. Like you said, Thompson onfield displays defiently needs to be tidied up alot, too many free kicks, was our leader for free's against. So like you said, i dont think that Thompson has the leadership to become captain yet. He certainly has the ability and skill to do so, but thats a different matter. Rutten on the other hand has already spent a year in the Leadership group.

Rutten would make a great captain, he is a great player, hard worker and leads from the front (or should that be the back???). I'd take him as skipper over Thomo but he might be too young... but age is just a number as they say in the classics.

There would be a few canditates really. Shirley, Rutten, Reilly, Burton, Goodwin, McGregor, Thompson, Johncock for the captaincy after Roo gives it up.
Goodwin will probably get it until he retires, which would be 2-3 years, then maybe Rutten will be around 24-25 so i dont think that would be old enough, so then he can take it then, but he would be in some compettion with Thompson and Johncock i believe

Seeing Goodwin is 30 now, he could captain for a few years...there isn't really anyone in the 27ish age group that could take over immediately after Roo as the next long term captain.

There aren't any real standouts for the next captain. Benny Rutten is in contention, so would be Brent Reilly, Scott Thompson, maybe Marty Mattner? It's certainly worth a good debate :thumbsu:

I'm not sure why so many people talk up Reilly as a future captain. Can anybody explain this?

Well really, as we saw last year from the 2nd teir group. Reilly was one of our more dominate players. When we had Reilly, Van Berlo, Doughty, Thompson all playing midfield instead of Goodwin, Edwards and Shirley, Reilly was the standout from the group, and cleared the ball from the centre the most. I dont believe he can become a captain, but he is defiently worth a mention

I think there would be only 2 players around the 26-27 age mark that could call up some contention in the captaincy.. and they would be Burton and McGregor, by that time, McGregor will be 25-26, and Burton will be 26-27, so they could bring some contention into the Leadership role. But doubt they will

I'm not sure if Reilly is much of an onfield leader and last year he did improve his performances but could probably get a bit more consistent.. i think he will have another good year in 07. I do like him, i think he's a good player which a lot of room for improvement too which is always good to see. Not sure about Shirley being a skipper even though he is a handy and underrated player.

I bloody hope Thompson lifts his game a bit, he started in 05 and dropped off in 06, a big 07 and i'll be stoked.

Do you really think Ken would make a good captain?? Same goes for Burton, they just don't really seem captaincy material. Infact looking back on this thread and almost every single player has been named as a future captain!
How about Nick Gill?? Or maybe Greg Gallman whoever he is.

1 probelm i do have about Reilly, i picked up from basically every centre bounce that he cleared last year, is that he kicked the ball hurridly out of the centre, he never really looked up and aimed for a target up the ground, he just picked the ball up and slammed it on the boot and hoped it went somewhere to our advantage, that is where he needs to work on a bit, cause last year most of the time it fell into opposition hands.
