One of the trickiest things to weigh up this year will be the ages of the standout candidates.

Martin and Newcombe were both born in 2001, despite being in the first and second years on AFL lists they're in their 3rd year out of school and in state league systems (even if it was a cup of coffee at Box Hill in 2020 for Newcombe).

Bowey and Chapman were born in 2002 and have 1 full preseason under their belts.

Daicos, Rachele, Gibcus, JHF born in 2003. Although with Daicos and JHF you can kind of counter some of their age with the reality they were exposed to state league footy and pretty much locked in on AFL careers from a long way out.

I think Martin and Newcombe won't be marked down too harshly due to age. But if it weren't for covid they might well have been drafted earlier and not being eligible for the award. Tricky.

They don't get marked down per se, if they're clearly the top 2 then they're going to get most of the votes. However if a first year player is around the same mark as a second or 3rd year they generally favour that.

I meant in regards to getting in his face.
Did you actually see it and know what happened?
It was Jack that got in HIS face and it was because of the whack.
You're still effectively saying that you like it when a player gives another guy a cheap shot, then gets in the same player's face when the victim take exception to being hit.
He also gave a swinging arm hit to Kennedy in the same game.
I haven't seen any of his other games, so not sure if being a bit of a cheap shot fake thug is part of his M.O. or if he just had a couple of moments in frustration, but he looks like he could be a super talent, so I hope it's just the latter.

Think it was frustration.
Looked to have serious remorse when he took the screamer over switkowski and knocked him out.

I liked that he stood up for his club. Please don’t read any further into it than that and no, that’s not what I’m “effectively saying”.

On most cases I get where your coming from but with Newcombe it's the opposite. Newcombe wasn't even in the pathway before COVID. He had repeatedly been nocked back by Gippsland, only in this 3rd year after being nocked back putting on a lot of size was he picked up at a TAC level. Covid infact robbed him of the opportunity in the end only getting to play 1 intraclub tryout. So he never got the same coaching or development through those teen years many who are scouted early have gotten.

He came and tried out at Box Hill and Mitchell liked what he saw but was traveling a long way from home and work each week as a part time footballer. Regardless got drafted at the MSD and debuted 6 days later.

One of the main areas he has to improve is developing the endurance to go with his explosive way he plays and has only had 1 true preseason in a professional system and that was this year.

Fair enough. Perhaps you misread the altercation and/or only saw the footage that the media ran with when they decided to push the narrative that Jack was the bad guy, but JHF was in no way, shape or form standing up for the club when he got in Jack's face and I'm sick of people misrepresenting it as some kind of hero moment or worthy of adulation.

I’m purely comparing their athletic gifts and style of play. JHF is much more like a Danger or Dusty than Newcombe is.

I guess the whole thread itself is subjective. But I find this absolutely bewildering.

In my mind Dusty and Danger play nothing alike. Definitely not closely enough that a player could legitimately be compared to both.

I don’t rate the award as it’s flawed. Simply pointing out the influence of Windhager in a far tougher game was greater.
Alright mate. Carlton playing interstate, key players out injured, playing as a small forward, had a huge impact on the game.

Stop trying to detract from others because you're a sooky la la
