JHF comfortably leading all rising stars in contested possessions and clearances, which reflects the role he's currently being asked to play. Kid is a freak, not sure he's had more than a dozen touches this year he hasn't had to go in and win himself.

He's top 20 in the entire competition for contested possessions. I think he's flying under the radar a bit because he hasn't had that 25-touch or 3-goal game, but every week he's basically cracking in with his 18-20 touches, 4-5 clearances and 10+ contested possessions in a very poor side. His ball use is elite as well, however he's not getting enough opportunities to show that yet.

Yep and low game time but still producing

Last night 20 touches in 68% game time

Shaping to be a very good draft crop, especially when we consider the amount of footy these kids missed due to covid during some pretty important years for development

Don’t think he will be in contention at the end of the season due to the position he plays but can’t believe how well settled Gibcus is

Limited Browns influence last week to a non factor and held his own against Darling Friday night

JHF’s clearance work and contested ball is being severely underrated. In my opinion he is playing the hardest role of all rising star contenders in a very poor side. I don’t want to take too much away from Daicos, he is clearly a future gun, but he has had a pretty cushy transition into AFL.

Jack Carroll enters the room

Disagree

Also I’d be shocked if they gave it to him over the body of work JHF has put up
If a player like JHF misses out on getting the nod off a standout game due to others like Carroll impressing on debut or somebody else edging him out, then he's likely to get one later in the season off his body of work.
Haven't seen many other games this weekend to know if somebody else has been better, but if it ended up being between JHF and Carroll in last night's game, then Carroll was clearly better (not knocking JHF).

EDIT: I should note that in terms of winning the award, JHF, and others, are obviously miles ahead of Carroll. My comments were more specifically about the nom this week.
Hopefully Carroll can cement a spot and get some continuity to close the gap, but not playing the first 6 games will make it hard for him.

JHF being let down in this regard by TT and LDU not stepping up this year. Would not be surprised to see him surpassing these guys in 2022.

Statistically he's already the club's best clearance player (obviously aside from Cunnington) and the eye test supports this. It's quite evident that he is the guy opposition mids are putting the most time into at stoppages.

Yep, credit to the kid. But an indictment on his midfield team mates.

It’s not saying much, but LDU has been our best mid this year. He gets criticised far too much on his output. Statistically he has improved every year he has been on our list and I think his impact on games has as well. Last night he got us back into the game in the second quarter with 10 disposals and a goal and was then moved to the forward flank for the second half, which was bewildering.

Completely agree on Thomas, plus Simpkin and Greenwood have been below average as well. To have a Cunnington or even Anderson would do wonders for all of them.

JHF's role is not to be impactful?

It’s a harder role to be impactful and I still think he had an impact. Horne- Francis is having to win his own ball in a poorly performing midfield, compared to Carroll being given the ball in an elite performing midfield. Not taking anything away from Carroll, it was a great debut, but their roles on the night were far different. Horne-Francis has the most clearances of any player eligible and also the most contested possessions, which shows the responsibility he has.

Agreed, silly reply by me. Think JHF is one of the favourites to win the whole thing, but feel he won't get the nom this week.

We are bad so all our energy may as well go into fighting you kents about Nic Martin winning this thing. He's seriously impressive
I Put $20 on him at $150 and he is as good as I've seen for a 1st year player at Essendon, has Heppell and McGrath covered easily, and they both won the award. Martin is Essendons best young player and will be top 3 in the B&F and could possibly win it.
