Rising star not as close as some think? (Discuss)

Is this all the once horse race alot of us expect it to be with Daniel Rich being crowned the AFL's rising star for 2009?

IMO itll be a bit closer then what people think and one player who i think is a chance of taking the crown away from Rich is West Coast's Chris Masten.

Was looking at his stats on footy wire today and for the season so far he has in averages:

9.4 kicks a game
11.6 handballs a game
21 disposals per game
2 marks per game
2.9 tackles per game

(Have left some out....these are the main ones)

And in terms of where he ranks amongst the eligible rising stars for the year he is ranked:

2nd amongst rising stars for Inside 50's per game
2nd amongst total handballs
4th in total handballs per game
3rd for goal assists per game
1st for total disposals for season
1st for total disposals per game

(Once again have left out some - But the main ones are above)

That said - I still think Rich will win the award this season as he is a first year player whilst Masten is a 2nd year player - But alot of people seem to think Rich has it in the bag and is a dead set certainty to win it - But i think otherwise.

Cant be bothered putting a poll in at the moment but feel free to discuss who you think the winner will be and any smokies who you think could walk away with the award (And try provide stats and evidence of this)

With respect, you obviously haven't seen a lot of Rich play. Masten is a tidy footballer, but Rich is in another stratoshpere at this stage.

Not only is Rich more penetrating and dangerous with the football, but his tackling, shepherding and 1%ers in general place him in the Joel Selwood league.

I never thought I would see a first year player as good as Selwood but within 2 years I think I have. Rich will poll double figure votes in the Brownlow for sure and probably be top 5 in Brisbane's best and fairest.

Masten is the most underrated player in the competition and by a fair bit too

Bang! How many times has Masten done that?

Not a cannon pass but Masten has been lining up Kennedy and Hansen with bullet passes for the past six weeks now.

Masten is being underrated as Embers said but hes not even close to Rich. Nobody is.

Andy Otten is right up there as well with Rich. He just hasn't got the media attention. Rich gets noticed because he can do the flashy attention grabbing things, Otten is a workmanlike player who just gets the job done every week.
Plus he was touted at the number one draft pick for the majority of last year, so there was already hype about him. The hype eased as the draft camp approached but wasn't expected to fall to 7th pick.

Grimes from Melbourne has had better stats than Rich all year, doesn't mean he should win the award. Rich has been a revelation this year, performing in a much stronger side than the Demons and West Coast.

Which is easier to do.

That pass by Rich was awesome. He certainly a beautiful kick. Why did they change the PP rules in 06? We could've got both him and NN.

Yeah, they changed the position of the priority pick the year we need it. So we end up with Gumby and Jetta :(. Sheedy has said he would have taken Joel Selwood if we had the earlier pick. :( Oh what if? lol

It's between Liam Anthony and Rich for me.
Anthony's been great, but he's only played 5 games, so no way he will win it.

Maybe if he hadn't hurt himself before Round 1. But Rich has been a real winner from the get go. I'd be very surprised if he doesn't take it out.
