Rivals round outcasts?

St Kilda vs. Western Bulldogs  :

Can someone please explain why these 2 teams are rivals because I have been thinking about this for a while and have no idea why? Are they just outcasts that have no major rivalry with any other team? The only thing I can think of is that they are both trying to win their second premiership before the other one does?

The rest of the fixture seems to be fairly self explanatory:

Melbourne vs. Geelong
Fremantle vs. West Coast Eagles
Essendon vs. Richmond
Adelaide vs. Port Adelaide
Brisbane Lions vs. Sydney Swans
Carlton vs. Collingwood
Kangaroos vs. Hawthorn

You've got 7 other rivalry games, 14 teams, so in a 16 team competition, that leaves just 2 left so I guess they have to play each other. I think it's simple.

Ok, so it is that simple? It could be structured a bit better with the 10 Victorian teams though to add a little rivalry. Perhaps alternate some years, for example, Essendon V Bulldogs for the geographical western suburbs rivalry and Richmond V St.Kilda?

I would have thought Geelong/St Kilda was a monty this year.

The AFL have no imagination.

Melbourne/Footscray would have been good too after their match late last year.

They should simply swap the match-ups.

The battle of the 1 premiership club
Thats all i could come up with but i thought that there must be more.
Has there ever been any sort of rivalry between these clubs:confused:
Saints and Dogs fans please give us something!

Maybe you could play essendon in the battle of the blatant salary cap cheats.

Bit harsh on the Dons really because they did nothing compared to your systematic cheating and disdain for the game....

Some of them have clear themes, e.g.

Melbourne vs. Geelong (The Grammar Rivalry)
Adelaide vs. Port Adelaide (Mullet v Mullet)
Brisbane Lions vs. Sydney Swans (Battle of the Love Children)
Kangaroos vs. Hawthorn (Retro rivalry)

Saints v Bulldogs - perhaps "Other" will do.

Or even "Doormat Challenge". That's how the AFL treat them.

Touchy subject is it.

It is. Carl V V Coll/ Ess v Rich or even a combination of any 4 of those side splaying each other is a part of absolute fierce bitter rivalry that has developed over 100 years between the 4 biggest and most supported clubs over those years. Nothing much to do at all with cross-town geographical rivalries as you're suggesting. Melb v Geel were the very first game of footy 150 years ago; The Roos V Hawks rivalry come from their time in the '70's (remember the battles between Keenan and Scott in the ruck); the Derby and Showdown speak for themselves and maybe Brisbane V Sydney is one to try develop given they're non-AFL states although as a rivalry I'm not sure that one will really take off.

obviously not all 8 games have equal rivalry.
to be honest Brisbane as a team have greater rivalry with the 3 teams we've played against in GFs.
But Collingwood cant play 4 times against all the people that dont like them (or 15 :p), so we play our 'State of Origin', and other teams have to play teams that arent as strong rivals as a Carlton V Collingwood, or the Showdown and Derby.

Well...St. Kilda and the Bullies have to play someone this weekend, why not each other?
I realize that, but the TV networks generally try to highlight the rivalries over the years before each game of the rivalry round and then show some footage to hightlight that rivalry. For example, Crakers Keenen V Don Scott for the Roos/Hawks game, the Derby all brawl in for the Dockers/WCE etc.....I was trying to think if there is ANYTHING they could possibly use before this game and came up completly empty!

Isn't it quite sad that after 100+ years, these two clubs can't get anyone to hate them or as the AFL call it "rival" them instead of pity them. Oh well.
lol - I think we're feeling plenty of hate these days.

Does anyone hate Carlton anymore?

I suspect these days you are pitied more than the Dockers.

I would have liked the Hawks to play the Bombers but I guess that's not going to happen.

If I had a second choice I would go for Melbourne.

I reckon their are serious grounds to build a big rivalry (if we don't already have one) Both traditionally consist of middle to upper class supporters, both nearly merged and have played some epics over the years!

We did play Essendon until last season when it was rearranged. The Dee's aren't a bad call but then Geelong, one of the oldest clubs are left out.

Spot on Jim. Fr each of Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon and Richmond the other 3 represent age old eternal rivalries which form has no impact on. Each of the 4 have passing rivalries with the other 6 Vict. clubs but a win v the other members of the Big 4 is always cherished.
