Ridiculous change. It really is a clueless organisation - 4 on the bench for ffs.

Ridiculous all round.

What a farce!
  • Medical sub named 60 min prior to bounce (out of the emergencies)
  • Medical sub gets medal if not activated GF day
  • Player gets game to his record even if he sits on the bench all day as an unactivated sub.

WHAT A JOKE IMAGINE MAKING YOUR DEBUT & NO EVEN STEPPING FOOT ON THE GROUND ~~~ AFL STILL GOT NO IDEA

Hocking is a pleb. They need to remove him from his role. Gil no better. Honestly clueless. I’d be spewing if I was an 18 year old debutant and hadn’t played a second on the pitch but I’ve got 1 game against my name. For the concussion issues I understand the concerns but still think about the way they’ve implemented it. Dumb. Would be better off just naming it as a sub again and usage as a tactical thing.

****ing clueless decision.
AFL should have told coaches, if you got a player out concussed, that is what your ****ing bench of four is there for FFS!!!
But no, pander to the coaches wants and screw fabric of game more with their need to have grid lock congestion from one end of ground to other as much as possible. ****ing control freaks and could not care less what fans want with this.

No great surprise, every major sports league worldwide is worried about CTE and if I'm the AFL's insurers I'd be making sure they're doing everything they can to minimise future risk.

Sorry but I don't quite understand this argument. We don't expect the injured player to play out the geme - we actually have 4 players and increased these interchanges for this very reason. The coaches loose interchange options but they find a way to apply pressure on the AFL to manipulate the bench again. Amazing.

I just asked a question to someone I work with regarding the Captains Run who was heavily involved in an AFL club recently and they said it’s very chill and laid back, sports scientists will want the players to have a minimal session and get them out of there to prep. Mostly a low intensity warm up with basic structures and tactics used by the captains in the drills to prep for game day. Players might choose to not do the session or something minimal coz that’s what they need to prepare and will be good to go for game day. Seems it is likely the case for Harry, Levi and Jack.

I dont think its a bad rule. I disagree with it being counted as a debut or in games tallys or medals etc, but its a minor gripe with a rule that on the most part I support.

I don't mind it either. Its injury and a tactical rule change

I would allocate the sub as a player that has pace rather than endurance

It's Matt Kennedy's role all year to me. He can play on ball to fill in for a mid or as a 3rd tall.
- If we lose a KPD, Casboult takes the defence spot and Kenendy goes forward
- If we lose a KPF, Kennedy goes forward
- Lose an onballer, Kennedy goes on ball
- Lose a HFF or HBF, then move some deckchairs around (e.g Zac Williams to that spot and Kennedy in the middle)

One of Matt's biggest issues is pace, but that's less of an issue if he comes on fresh

Fantastic post.

This makes zero difference to concussion.

Concussion is a brain injury. Staying on the field with concussion puts you at bigger risk of developing permanent damage.
Giving the coaches an option instead of risking the player minimises the risk they'll game the concussion protocol. I'm not sure why you're disagreeing
