Hocking is a pleb. They need to remove him from his role. Gil no better. Honestly clueless. I’d be spewing if I was an 18 year old debutant and hadn’t played a second on the pitch but I’ve got 1 game against my name. For the concussion issues I understand the concerns but still think about the way they’ve implemented it. Dumb. Would be better off just naming it as a sub again and usage as a tactical thing.

Well it is the sub rule but with 4 on the bench instead of 3

Concussion is a brain injury. Staying on the field with concussion puts you at bigger risk of developing permanent damage.
Giving the coaches an option instead of risking the player minimises the risk they'll game the concussion protocol. I'm not sure why you're disagreeing

The protocol already exists. The coaches (should) have zero influence over the doctors doing the concussion testing and activating the protocol, and the sub should also have zero influence over it.

Hm.

Don't like that this means a developing player misses out on a reserves game, or that the reserves side is weakened by taking one of their best players out and plonking them on the senior bench to potentially not play a minute of football.

Do like that the choice to sub a player off is in the hands of the club doctor. Just gotta hope they're given some clear expectations around how loose they can be with "precuationary" decisions.

It's really no different to what we did over the past couple of years. We've tended to hold a player back just in case and if the seniors game was after the reserves game there was usually a player who would play neither. At least they get a chance to play now.

Maybe that's too much freedom for the AFL or JLTs risk appetite. I'm not giving an opinion on the ruling, just making an assumption as to why it's being introduced.

Hardwick has already said he'll be trying to use it tactically, there system needs to have duty of care for the player ahead of the match and maybe the insurer or auditors don't think the current system does that?

I'm 2 pages behind, so it might have been said already, but I think it could be a bit naïve to think that a coach won't be able to get their way if they desperately want to get their spare on the ground for some reason. As usual, the AFL leaves a nice grey area open for exploitation.

If they were serious about preventing exploitation, there would be an independent medical assessment as the final arbiter, no-one connected to the club - apart from the player - should be involved in the decision.

It's Matt Kennedy's role all year to me. He can play on ball to fill in for a mid or as a 3rd tall.
- If we lose a KPD, Casboult takes the defence spot and Kenendy goes forward
- If we lose a KPF, Kennedy goes forward
- Lose an onballer, Kennedy goes on ball
- Lose a HFF or HBF, then move some deckchairs around (e.g Zac Williams to that spot and Kennedy in the middle)

One of Matt's biggest issues is pace, but that's less of an issue if he comes on fresh

2021, what a year for MK.
Rookie downgrade & permanent sub.

How many professional sporting codes around the world would introduce a major new rule on the eve of a new season?

What a farce.

The only way this rule works is if it is mandatory for whoever is subbed out of the game to miss a week. Otherwise we're just back at the old sub rule which was a complete joke.

It's specifically for concussion, isn't it? It encourages teams to treat head injuries far more cautiously, and just sub them out based on the observed physical contact, rather than symptom set.

Delayed onset concussion is very much a thing, and reflects the ongoing stress on the body as you roam around with subclinical neurological damage.

Pretty sure Newnes sat out at least one quarter of the Saints game.

I really want to swap LOB for Newnes, but otherwise I'd be thrilled with that team. I think O'Brien can create a lot more high quality opportunities in our forward 50 than Newnes, without compromising our defensive run in midfield.
You would've seen by now but no - medical sub. Despite the medical screening etc - it'll be manipulated like buggery.

Shades of grey ... it’s the AFL way ...

haha bad luck matt.

Damn, not good to hear but would have thought Gibbons ahead of Durdin so interesting turn of events if you on the money.
How Durdin is in the frame seems BS to me, unless injured, didn’t even make the cut for preseason games 🤷‍♂️. Others like Gibbo and Cuners surely ahead with of him if a late change
