Loved what I heard out of Voss yesterday, we aren't trying to be anyone else and we'll just focus on playing our own way.

Years gone past we worried about mitigating the oppo's threats, whereas now we literally have one of our own on every line.

It feels great rolling into the year with expectation rather than hoping we may jag a win or two throughout the year.

Big Chuckles to set the crowd alight!

RE: Saad - I agree I think they'll play a "defensive forward" on him, meaning it'll be Gov (1st up) or Doc (2nd) as the outlet. Gov better kick (not that Doc's a slouch) - that's why I think we'll try go through Gov first. I like having Ed in as insurance - can tag any of them if/as required (Hopper, Tarranto, Dusty, Meatball) with Georgie playing that defensive mid role if/as required. Very tough ask for SOS...BUT he's just gotta hit the body and follow up at ground level which we know he'll do. I reckon Hollands will play that "defensive" wing role we tried Setterfield in last year and will blow up anybody trying to run with him (ease the young fella in in front of 90-odd K), while I think we'll look to attack more through Acres (hopefully he can kick a couple too). Definitely some massive match ups tonight. Hopefully someone can contain Bolton - although he can't win it solely on his own.

Gov, Doc and Saad looks a lot more difficult for them to contain - especially with Newman back. Hopefully our mids can put enough pressure on the ball that these guys can do some real damage.

I suspect the tigs team looks better on paper with guys like Reiwoldt and Cotchin quite a long way past their prime now and while dusty will still be good he is no longer the match winner he once was.

We should win this one even without Walsh. Can't understand why they are pretty strong favourites with the bookies.

Tbh, 'play our way' is annoying me as much as 'greenshoots'.
I get it, but weekly cliches shit me beyond even Malthouse. Actually, no nothing is that bad.

On the counter, perhaps Ed should play a defensive role on Rioli.. The Tigs backline looks tall and slow and without the Rioli run of half back we should be able to use this to our advantage.

Without a doubt and it can get a bit bloody much.

The only difference between then and now is that us as supporters can clearly see being demonstrated on the field what 'playing our way' actually means.

Hopefully the ‘kick it long and hope our twin towers catch it’ is not the meaning of ‘playing our way’…

Stats in clearances are interesting. If Cripps, Hewett, etc, get first hands on the pill at a stoppage, then dish it to the likes of a Fisher that hits a target inside 50, that doesn't mean the likes of Fisher isn't effective at a stoppage

Also, pressure at a stoppage, delaying an inside 50, doesn't show on generic stats
Gut feel.

The additional agility of players like Fish and perhaps Durdin are useful differentiators at CBs, particularly in red time.

Cameos are important, Martin would be my first option, then Durdin, Mots, Fisher.

You might see Acres taking a couple when both Hollands and Ed are covering wings

This is Carlton.

Carlton can run.

See Carlton run.

Match ups/tactics are intriguing for this game

Acres/McIntosh sounds about right

Ed, on Pickett or Rioli at HB, or a Prestia in the guts

If Ed plays further up the ground, does Hollands start on Rioli at HB?

Owies, Motlop, Fisher need to bring pressure but still get into dangerous positions

Hewett on Dusty in middle, Newman to take him when drifting forward

Jsos as the chopout ruck against Nank and Sampson? Tough ask

Saad might get a cooler/tagger, Doc, Gov, Cowan then need to be the outlets

The problem with Ed as a tagger is that he was always fair - a tagger who is a nice bloke - hmmmm I have never seen him do a dirty deed in his whole career - and some opposition deserve some nasty back - not an enforcer and not mean enough to even hurt blokes within the rules. It is a missing link in the midfield - perhaps somewhat made up for by some genuine big lads - big enough to make you feel it within the rules- but Carlton hasn't had the nasties and I am thirsty for some.

In the forward line - I would love to have someone with the size to back up some physicality as displayed by Motlop /Durdin and Honey. For every flop from Harry I'd prefer a calculated "I am not marking in this contest I am kneeing someone out of the game -because they decided to sit in front of me"

Down back I saw some evidence from Young of some mongrel - need much more - Weitering is a sneaky hard arse- buyt if he decides to put someone out for the game like he tried with DeGoey - be smarter how you try and hip and shoulder- - dont use the pointy end of your shoulder FFS.

My call is early and consistent - Fisher and Owies have to hit the scoreboard - the defensive pressure is a non negotiable base line - kicking goals is what scares opposition - same for the 100 gamer today .

If Carlton allows Richmond to chest puff and play the so called 'play on the edge' with no credible response- that is a loss for us and a repetition of round 2 last year.

I can understand why Vossy went for Hollands and Cowan - he has another in Honey who should be encouraged to go in as hard as he likes - I hope he gets the sub gig.

Dusty named at full forward, i haven't watched any of the Tigers pre season games, is this a role he has been playing or more just floating?? Newman the obvious match up, but prob need a plan for if he drifts into the midfield..

Named positions don't say much as a general rule though with the additions of Tarranto and Hopper he will be playing more forward this year. Hardwick saiid so. I suspect something like a 70 / 30 forward - mid split.

Tigers line-up looks strong

I disagree tbh, there backline looks old and slow, we should be able to exploit this with our athletic forwards. We at least break even with the midfield and Weiters usually has Lynch in his pocket, McGovern on Riewoldt should work, only concern is Dusty and if he is in a mood nothing will stop him..
