AFL Autopsy Rnd 1: Done by the Hawkes

Chin up guys. You got Clarko'ed. Best game day coach I've seen by a long way, and has this uncanny ability to see into the key points of opposition structure to interfere with. Especially when his side is being over run by a team playing free flowing footy. He slips in a road block here, a speed hump there and suddenly it all stops working and your players have no idea what's gone wrong.

Importantly, too, he still has a core of long term leaders who know exactly how to execute his gear shifts. In these days of runner restrictions it doesn't even matter if your coach understands the changes he swings at the start of a quarter. Your screwed until the next break if you don't have a team (or at least on field leaders) that know the coach and his methods inside and out.

Some of the "capitulation" was poor. But it wasn't as damning as it looked.

Tough to lose like that. First half was brilliant, albeit with set shot misses that in the end cost us. Third quarter was shocking, did not adjust to their change of play, played too high and got caught out the back.

Liked Jones attack on the footy, needs to address the kicking for goal.

This exactly. Same thing happened in the netball, final Constellation Cup game v NZ a couple of weeks ago. Team of debutants and new coach lost large lead against a more experienced coach. It sucks but it happens.

I thought the midfield was serviceable but it was the same old problem. Long bombing it into fwd 50 where it was left to the gods as to what happened next. Hawthorn on the other hand took more uncontested marks in their fwd 50. We've been doing this for the past 20 years.

An utterly predictable capitulation by an arrogant club bereft of anY ambition, purpose and pride. Disgrace.

I thought in general we played pretty well and in a way, considering we're not actually competing, a loss is better than a win. So all in all I'm pretty pleased with the result.

Few notes;

- Laverde was awesome in defence. I was on the fence the last couple games but really did well today.
- Look way undersized down back without Stewart/Hurley etc down there.
- Cahill and Ham are not up to AFL football, period. Too weak and un-impactful around contests. Need time in the 2's.
- I was unsure if I wanted Merrett to stay or get the comp for him if he leaves. He better stay. Was awesome.
- Loved Hind around the ground and has a bit of mongrel about him which I like.
- Caldwell played well and has proved to be a nice pick up. Probably needs to stay back at training with Parish and work on kicking.

But the biggest one;

- Wright and Hooker were terrible together forward. No chemistry whatsoever and were very poor athletically and competing for second chances. Positioning was awful as well - on fast breaks would constantly stand next to each other instead of isolating their defenders 1 on 1. Half decent forward line and we win that game IMO.

A lot of people are blaming the loss on youth/inexperience (as they tend to do every year), but Hawks would have to be as young, if not younger than us wouldn’t they?
Average age was older (even accounting for Burgoyne) and higher average games played.

I was out with mates watching the game and said at half time, “we lose from here.” I wasn’t one bit surprised about what unfolded in the 3rd and wasn’t even angry when it was over. Why? Because we the people know Essington and I refuse to let this kind of sh*t ruin my weekends anymore.

Yep I sent my old man a text at half time saying the same thing, his response "classic Essendon." Then the 3rd term happened.

And yet the last time we played the Hawks we pretty much played the same game with the halves reversed with a far, far older and more boring 22 and a far less sustainable method and everyone was happy as Larry when we won.

The outcome doesn’t matter, but the way we play certainly does and as long as it’s not an aberration and we can do it for a bit longer next week and learn from it then it’s a huge tick and you shrug off the rest.
Convinced they tanked that game for the picks. Adelaide too.
At no point did we look convincing in either game
This club will beat teams that lay down. That is all. The number of clubs willing to do so is shrinking.

We have one critical player to come back (stringer) and all that does is disrupt fwd selections. Cant play hooker, wright and stringer together imo.
Our backline is in its worse shape in a long time and was left out at sea by the midfield.
Gifted so much space and time to the hawks mids and fwds

Funny moment for me was when one of the commentators mentioned we were 18th for fwd line pressure last year. It was as if that comment reminded us who we truly were.
In walked Essendon of old

One big positive is that this week’s We Are Essington video will have lots of content

We had 4 more players than them under 50 games and they had 3 more over a hundred. Average age for us 24.4 vs 25.10

It's a tough pill to swallow watching Trucks press conference. He should have said I should be sitting here talking about a fantastic win instead I'm pulling bullshit from a 1 point loss.

a few positive signs in the ruck, midfield, and forward line. However, the backline is an absolute train wreck. It will never be up to scratch while we play a combination of this cohort: Redman, Franga, Cahill, Laverde, BZT, Stewart, Hind. Hooksey and Hurley would still be the best and are on their last legs.

I know a few of these players have potential, but how can you expect inexperienced backs with potential to gel with dud players?
