All that match report told me is that O'Brien and Williamson are ready to go, that Philp is close, and that Moore would be promising as a contested mid at the clearances.

Owies, BSOS and Phillips are also building.

I read it slightly differently.

Williamson - definitely ready to go.
O'brien - worked hard but the 14 a side format on a full ground suited him - not sure how that translates into picking a side for a narrow ground against quality opposition in what appears to be terrible conditions in Geelong
Philp - had the most tackles of anyone on the ground (7 in a 14 a side game over just 3 periods) which is a massive stat for a teams that ranks 18th for tackling differential laying 19 fewer tackles than our opponents. Being described as "fantastic"and "really good" don't hurt his chances either - I am tipping him to come in.
Stocker - "He had quite a few strong clearances and some examples of some manic pressure on the inside" 2 things we will desperately need this week - the ground, bigger bodied opposition and expected conditions may see us rate these things higher than O'brien's outside run.
Kennedy - obviously the game day emergency, might count for something and again being a bigger body won't hurt him.

If I was to guess I would say JSOS, Willo and Philp come in with Lang , Newman and Newnes going out. Willo will play more on the wing and Jack will pinch hit down back to give Docherty, SPS and Simpson a rest. Philp a straight swap from Lang.

After taking a few days to think it through, I think there are a couple of tough decisions that need to be made about some of our senior players. No one should be exempt from being dropped if they're not going to put in the hard work. Saying that, these are the changes I'd like to see us make ahead of this weekends game:

1. Williamson for Newman (Obvious)
2. Philp for Lang (Quicker, applies pressure, and will give the team as a whole a lift. Also an obvious choice)
3. SOS for McGovern (Still doesn't compete hard enough for long enough)
4. LOB for Newnes (LOB really impressed me in the back half of last year. Deserves a crack.)
5. Stocker for Murphy (0 tackles in the first two weeks just isn't good enough. Stocker played a lot of midfield minutes in the practice match this weekend and apparently looked pretty good. He adds some much-needed grunt to the midfield unit as well. With the shorter quarters in place, I don't think his lack of conditioning will be as evident.)

Agree. If our senior core of players cannot play with intent and aggression, then you might as well bring in the kids and let them play.

The idea of Kennedy selection has merit.
He is a good defensive mid sticks tackles blocks shepherds.
Might lose a bit on the spread but a wet day would mitigate that could play on Selwood .
His hands are quick first full preseason I’d have him in over Lang as a forward

Something changed with Kennedy early last year. It may have been injury or it may have been coaching.
The reserves games I watched, had him pulling back at stoppages instead of getting involved. Not sure why this would have been the case.
It improved by years end, but there just wasn't something right about his approach overall. Why?

I can see Philp being involved for this game. It just makes sense, given there's no Dow and for pressure being asked for.

Tom Williamson will come in this week and the only thing that will keep him from our best 22 moving forward is injury. Hard to forget his debut, 15 touches and 5 tackles in a massive win over the Bombers. Mongrel, beautiful left foot kick and agility to match. He's put on size and it sounds like his body is ok, get him in and leave him there!

Do you understand the skill required to be an inside mid? I realise we’re searching under any and all rocks lying around at princes park for solutions but come on... got to put our resources to better use than that... reminds me of our previous obsession to recruit half back flankers and turn them into mids... if Moore makes becomes a clearance machine, I’ll gladly eat all words.
I think there is a certain air of resolve around Moore. Definitely appears to be bringing "buy in" and intensity to the table in a bid to make the most of his second chance.

Can we really say the same about Lang, Setterfield etc?

Moore has a determination that will take him a long way if he can continue to build his body and tank, I feel he could have the makings of a decent player.

For mine, Setterfield is at the moment being exposed as yet another member of the "It will be easier at Carlton" recruitment basket, featuring alumni such as Kristian Jaksch and Caleb Marchbank. Really think a lot of these guys just expected it to happen for them at a club where they wouldn't have to work as hard for a game (and getting paid a lot more to do it).

Great summary Mac. I like what you're putting down.
Reckon JSOS plays mostly forward though - we still struggle with our link up from halfback/middle to high half forward and Jack is perfect for this. Allows Harry & Levi to remain closer to goal, thus more dangerous and importantly keeps the likes of Harry Taylor and Tom Stewart deep in our forward line and having to defend and not become playmakers.

Yep, it's Willow's time. All the patience, management and hard work both he and the club have put in. Let's get him going.

He was trying to play more as a forward rather than inside, perhaps he saw his opportunity to take Gibbons spot as the fwd/mid..

The media hounds are salivating at the thought of this game. We're being setup again to be absolutely smashed by the usual suspects if we get a hiding. And once again we have an opportunity to right the ship, answer the critics and prove that we're on the right track. I think we need a gnarly knuckles Kerley to address the group pre game. Maybe throw a few bricks at them with the lights out.

Nice little backhander from the media department here in the "inside the opposition" article:

"Coming up against Patrick Dangerfield and Joel Selwood in the middle, Patrick Cripps has always risen to the occasion against the best — and the same can be said for his form against Geelong."

AGREE I would risk stocker because hIs attributes are what we lack. Even if he plays 60% game time, the player he is replacing is lucky to get 10 possessions. We carried Dow and Obrien through 40 games. Give Stocker a shot-nothing to lose

He's a tall utility with a lot of athleticism, but not tall enough to play ruck. I'd like to see his midfield craft developed in the reservers to figure out if he can play at clearances, because I think he could be a huge asset there.

You need to re-watch the game, because for most of those players I can recall multiple instances where they put their body on the line in an effort to win the ball. Newnes is the only one I'm shaky on, but I'm far more concerned with him barely touching the football all game.
Nope I saw it fine the first time, I don’t want to get in a back and forth, life’s too short. But there is no way those players displayed a physical presence. Standing there when the ball comes is not a physical presence. You really believe these players played hard, tough football.. then we are truely watching different games.

Gibbons on the ball all day, give Setterfield a go on the ball. Need to drastically change it up in there.

If that doesn't work then we move on, give Stocker a good go at playing in the middle.

Keep picking the same players in there we will keep getting the same results.

Philp 100% has to play.

Long-time reader, first-time poster.

Have read a few posts criticizing McGovern’s game over the weekend and thought I’d throw my two-cents in.

Re-watched the game the other night (skipped the first term) and saw some good things from McGovern in the second half. He did a really good job providing that link-up play on the wing when we were moving the ball out of half-back. Took some good marks on the lead and moved the ball quickly onto the next phase of play. Also managed to halve a few contests, particularly against Gawn who was pushing back into the hole.

I think McGovern can provide a really important role for us as that lead-up target. He’s athletic enough to provide an aerial contest while also not being redundant once the ball hits the ground. He’s obviously improved his running capacity since last year and can hopefully provide multiple long leads over a quarter. It will also allow our bigger forwards to stay closer to goal and hopefully isolate some one-on-one contests for Harry and Casboult.

Obviously need to see this kind of play on a more consistent basis, but I think McGovern looked promising on the weekend and certainly deserves to keep his spot against Geelong.

Wholeheartedly agree. He was a big part of our comeback imo and definitely deserves his spot.

Yes, much rather players with a bit of a hard edge be given more opportunities. Willo stocker are musts.

Welcome aboard Vapor, nice first post.
If you had of watched the first quarter you would probably have a slightly different opinion on McGov. Then again he was not alone, meaning their were others that were abysmal. SPS, Murph, Setters to name a few.
Sure the comeback was great, but i would never say that we deserved the four points after that first quarter debacle.
