What, so I can’t have an opinion based on my own observations? Don’t be so defensive of your lad. Hinkley is obviously talking his lad up and is a bit smitten by more immediate familiarity. Gray is one of Port’s best and I still rate him highly but, c’mon, Jr is one the best we’ve seen. A better comparison might be Chapman. Everyone loves a player who can turn it on in an instant and win you a game. Chappy, like Gray, was that type but, unlike Gray, had a real midfield consistency for a few years at his peak. And Chappy was a bona-fide finals specialist. Ultimately, Gray is some way back in the pecking order.

Could add Burgoyne to that too, for possessions and influence.

There has be a few write ups of late to suggest that’s the higher award these days. (I don’t have an opinion on that either way)

Outside of BigFooty, nobody really gives a shit about the Coaches Association award (which has taken over from the AFLPA MVP as the "smart fan's" award of choice in recent years). I doubt the coaches themselves even put that much thought or time into the votes.

Yeah cant compare to Jnr in his total impact, he does play very similar but doesn't get as high numbers and also seems to struggle with acceleration/pace. He did 2/3 things in the melbourne game Friday night which directly led to goal's for us (like tap ons, handball clearance in traffic), the guy impacts play when he is near it, but to be at Jnr's level he would have needed to do that and get 30 touches a game over a 3-4 year period. 2 years ago he seemed to get that level but the groin problems last year restricted him to play forward so he struggled physically.

Still a gun for us, at times it seems like he is the only one that can genially break a game open. We need 2 of him to play forward and in the middle.

I think his reputation suffers a little due to his position; doesn't get as many goals as forwards, doesn't get as many touches as midfielders.

Arguably the best HFF in the league, but lacks a little recognition due to above IMO.
