Like many of you I was very happy with the great effort in the 1st quarter but, based on hard experience, I was under no illusion that we would maintain it. The longer the game played out, the more our weaknesses: structures, lack of pace and players who are notorious for wilting under pressure, became obvious. Anger was the overwhelming emotion I felt as the inevitable defeat loomed. I wished I could jump into the TV screen and be teleported to the field to shout at our players to "have a go", whatever that old cliche means these days.
It's absolutely clear that much needs to be done in the off-season to bring about meaningful change. Our forwards need to be taught how to play as forwards. At present, they are a rag-tag bunch who have periods of success but are found out against teams with good structures.
Perhaps surprising to some, I think we need a couple more midfielders who are quick on the spread and who kick the ball better than our incumbents.
The ruck and KPD situation has been covered thoroughly elsewhere but that's a personnel issue that won't be easily fixed.
Unfortunately, we keep failing stiff examinations so we need quite an overhaul of all aspects of club performance. Another year like this and anger may turn to resignation and then to indifference.

The poster said that 90% of posters on here bagged Bevo and I simply referenced that he is in the 10% who are uncritical of Bevo. That's not playing the man...that's nothing more than agreeing with what he actually posted. And I do find the cheerleading for the coach from the minority on here to be illogical and bizarre. So what? I haven't villified anyone.

Even at 40 points up and Freo goal less, you just knew what was going to happen. They don't have 4 1/4's in them, Bev and the coaching panel have zero ability to change anything within a game and the Plan A sucks.

This ones fair and square on Bev and the coaching staff. It wasn't us playing overly well that got us 40 points in front, it was Freo shit themselves early. Once they settled and tweeked their game, they came good and we couldn't change a thing. Team selection, game plan, not dealing with the GF capitulation correctly.

Get some strong senior heads in there to support Bev, but he has to under enormous pressure if he can't/refuses to change. Unfortunately the pres and head of footy seem to passive and anonymous, so change is unlikely.

No backline players of size who can intercept mark consistently, we really miss Wood.
Add to that tall backs apart from Keath (who has played second half of year with some injury)
Defensive mids ? We cannot stop or slow down oppositions mids when they get on top
Inside mids apart from Libba
Forward line smalls, crumbing goal kicking types

I kinda think to get better we need to take a few risks at the trade table. If that means we cash in on Dunkley and move a few players on, ie convince contract players to move / trade or move on JJ so be it

We were / are close however not close enough
In cold hard light of day my thoughts are
Our backline did quite well particularly early
Our midfield struggled mainly because we don’t win enough tap outs
Our forwards where poor, lack marking power and crumbing smalls
Overall lack of leg speed
Need to recruit a tap Ruckman and lots of leg speed preferable not less than 182
Or we shake, stir and repeat

Absolutely no doubt the worst thing we can do is to go in with the same strategy/ structure. It’s proven it can’t stand up all season or in big finals.

Unfortunately it’s going to take more than one off season to fix it.

Bevo has had such control over the club since ‘16 that this is not only his team but his list. You recruit the man and player- he didn’t recruit leaders.

Aside from that his list management has been shocking. It’s time to trade English on and a list turnover. There is a youngish midfielder playing for the Pies, speedy and silky, I think he could give us some run. We could try and recruit him- Patrick Lipinkski…..

We don't allow posters to ridicule or bully another person - that's the distinction - when an individual is attacked because they disagree or say something objectionable to someone else.

Tim English not standing the mark led to the 50 VDM gave away. Why did English not stand the mark? was it solely a mistake on his behalf or were our players instructed to not stand the mark? Because based on what we saw throughout the year I believe its the latter and that alone is why we need a new coach. It's just inexplicable that we would back off the mark in an elimination final when someone is having a shot for goal from that distance. I don't understand.

I thought the same thing when that happened. The confusion it caused between the two has cost us a final, that was the nail in our coffin last night during that stage of the game. We all saw this coming since round 2

Sometimes two things can be true at the same time depending how you want to look at it:

2 x Grand Finals with 1 premiership. Obviously fantastic. But when you look at the flip side:

In our Grand Final loss, we gave up a 8 point HT lead and a 19 point lead half way through the 3rd, to go on and suffer the worst second half GF deficit, ever

2-4 record in elimination finals. In 3 of those 4, we went in as favourites.

Of the 4th elimination loss, last night, we gave up a 41 point lead where we would have been $1.07 in live betting.

We have lost so many best 22 players under his watch, a lot due to him mismanaging them, and we are about to likely loss 2 more in JJ and Dunks (these two aren’t due to Bevo although you could argue rucking Dunks didn’t help).

While I’m extremely disappointed in some of the players last night (Naughton and English failed in finals, again and Baz was shocking), the above is enough body of work for me to suggest we need to move on from Bevo. He’s stabilised us, which I’m grateful for, but there is now a significant amount of evidence that he gets outcoached more often than not in big games.

Agree with all of your comments and from the players body language over recent games perhaps the coaching staff are losing the players. I hope not but reminiscent of the Macartney era.

No, that level of pressure is not sustainable for 2 hours of football. You need other ways to win games (which we don’ have)

I can't recall a team with such a gap between their best (which rarely comes out) and worst.

Huge amount of work to be done this off season. The defensive setup (all over the ground) simply isn't working, and our forward line is borderline inept for significant periods of time. And for the love of God please can we work on a plan to stop team's piling on goals in short succession. It is outrageous how badly we switch off at time.
