In non-selection thoughts, really interested with how we play Richards this week. We've generally been quite unimaginative in the midfield when we've had Treloar, Bont and Liberatore all playing (even last week when we were getting a bath in there there wasn't a willingness to make a move). They all get 75% CBAs plus and then the others fight for some scraps.

Against Hawthorn which is the only game that Richards and Liberatore have played together since Richards has moved up the ground, Richards got very little midfield time and essentially played as a half forward. Hated that! If that is his role I'd rather him play in defense where he is an A grader as well. I don't think it should be too hard to manage all the minutes around so all four get significant midfield time but I'm interested to see how it plays out. Will be super disappointed if we just play the same three in the centre bounce all day.

You can say it’s too early to play Buss all you want but the fact is we have debuted players who have had far less preparation. JOD had barely trained with us and Clarke was far from ready.
Gardner got a game and a kid at Auskick had better form. I am trying to stick with you Bevo but after selections like this week my patience is dwindling

Football is no where near as esoteric as some coaches try to make out. Recruit and play the best talent you can find. Talent combined with attitude, fitness and courage. Game plans get way too complex and coaches lose themselves up their own arse thinking their players are like chess pieces. Just play the most talented and competitive and courageous on your list, obviously within reason for some matchups, but no where nearly as important as this coach thinks. This is way better for team harmony and health. Nothing is more demoralising than seeing less deserving being promoted above more deserving.

... and Buss is an emergency.

Just sayin'.
Have we ever seen a debut that came from outside of the named 22 or from the extended bench?

Of course there is still time to make an announcement, but it seems a little unlikely given they like to make a show of and invite family to a players debut.

With the return of Richards, Its going to be interesting how we use Libba.

This may be sacrilege around these parts but we took a step backwards when he was the cornerstone of last weeks midfield rotations. I'll be really disappointed if Richards CBA come at the expense of going with the tried and true of Libba, the Bont and Treloar. I suspect that is exactly what we will see.

Reminds me of yabby Jeans who spoke to our school footy team

“Boys football is a simple game. We have the ball or they have the ball or no one has the ball and we need to get the ball”

On Cody Weightman for a second. Do you know he has a better goal per game average than:

Toby Greene
Tyson Stengle
Tom Papley
Kozi Pickett
Jamie Elliott
Willie Rioli

Is only marginally behind Charlie Cameron and Luke Breust.

Yes, and the longer he plays the better that average gets.

Severely underrated.

As I said ... "just sayin'".

However, being a bit more analytical about it, if Bevo was indeed hoping to catch Freo's oppo planners off guard this would be a very good way to go about it. If so, he might not have even risked telling Buss and his teammates in case it leaks out, as we have seen so often.

I'm not sure that's how he operates but it wouldn't totally surprise me if it happened.

I certainly want to see Richards at the CBAs too but don't underestimate Libba. He'll be much better for last week's run.

Would love to know how the selection committee rationalised playing Buku as a key back this week when he came on as a sub last week for 10 mins of game time and played forward.

Vanders getting this dream run of selection is a disgrace, so is Bramble being gifted games.
How did Buku go against Freo a few weeks ago? Not too good. Hopefully is forward and JOD is in the backline.

Garcia being omitted has just about floored me. You would assume he’s either been a naughty boy or copped some sort of illness/injury because surely this can’t be on form (and HEART) alone.

Was supposed to be going to this game. That’s changed as of today and I’m mildly relieved.

I suppose it’s a like for like thing - Richard’s v Garcia. Can Garcia do what Daniel does? What Vandermeer does? I would prefer him in rather than either of those 2 at the moment. There is also the argument Sanders isn’t at the level Garcia is at yet

Well Garcia can play football, something I’m not yet convinced on for VDM

Sadly our coach disappeared up his own arse some time in 2017 and apart from a brief time in 2021 when it popped out again, it has sunk deeper and deeper ever since.

Why he believes he's smarter than every other coach and is intent on overcomplicating the basics (like selection) is beyond me.

Cant wait for the corpse of Michael Walters to run it back, feasting on the territory given by his midfielders running around unchecked for 4 quarters. Can’t remember the last time I’ve gone into a weekend feeling as flat as I do about this one!

We’re still picking a player purely because he’s “fast”. What’s the point when he’s averaging 6.3 disposals in the last 6 weeks?

And if you thought pressure was keeping him in?

Well, Libba, Bont, Garcia, Richards, Treloar, Gallagher, West, McNeil, Sanders, Macrae, Weightman, English, Harmes, Daniel, Lobb, Branble, Dale and Naughton all averaging more pressure acts.

OH.. and averaging 1.8 tackles a game.

Taking the grand children, their excitement exceeds my disappointment in Garcia being out. A lifetime of attendance means that so often the result is the opposite of my expectations.

To be honest even in 2021, we had one of the most stacked midfields of all time, and when Martin actually played those midfielders crushed the comp (well, mostly).

English-Naughton-Bruce being fed by said midfield was insane.

Backline was propped up by indomitable Keath and Duryea but otherwise shaky. Bailey Dale was tearing teams apart out of there though.

Tactically I don’t think we were anything special that year, though the Dale move was notable. We kept it simple and had a number of very talented midfielders feeding some very talented talls. Defensive forward Schache was a good finals move. Lewis Young against Brisbane as our ruck was strange but maybe effective. We didn’t change the game like we did in 2016, but the simplicity worked for most of the season.

All that to say, 2015-16 mad scientist Bevo was new, fun and successful, but those days are long gone. Richards in the middle is probably his best move since putting Bailey Dale in the backline? But now it’s less chess playing and more…Dropping Garcia and keeping VDM, who didn’t even do the one thing he’s in the team to do?

He's also been very poor in the VFL as a defender this last month.

Buss been far better.

No selection integrity.

Bevo mentioned in his presser before the Lions game about Garcia not being very clean with his disposal.

If ball retention is a priority in this game I can understand it. Win as much as you can as often as you can from CBs with Bont, Treloar and Richards (also quick enough to defend it if we don't win it). Take it I50 and lock it in with Macrae and Libba (being clean and less prone to turnover) heavily involved in stoppages if the forward half. Sanders, being an effective tackler in close, is probably part of that recipe for locking it in.

Garcia's challenge is to improve his disposal and decision making to the point where he can't be left out. Not there yet.
