Let's get one thing straight Score Involvements is not a forwardline stat. It's a good ball user stat and it is heavily waighted towards the good teams because they are winning and scoring alot.

Example you can get score Involvements form centre clearances.

Forwards do well in it because they find them selves at the end of scoring chains with most possessions but Mids do really well in it as well because they turn rebound and contested ball into scoring chains.

It's probably the most important stat for a mid tbh.....

To be fair to danger he did spend half his season playing foward This year.

Highly doubt it was more than as a Mid in the guts though. Bont is worse that’s something they managed to completely stuff the forward line when it was the easiest area!

The absolute contempt Jakovich has for footy fans is pretty funny in this interview. When asked about players being picked out of position:

"In a covid year, everyone was playing everywhere, Brad Sheppard found himself kicking goals at times."

Macrae played 4% on a wing, and this happens most years. Good banter throwing out covid as a justification.

Look forwards need to sacrifice parts of there game mids don't.

Danger and Co are much better players the Butler no one is disputing that.

COULD Danger and Co perform at the level or above the level Butler did as a FP, probably but why would you waste them there.

This shouldn't be an award for the best 22 players in the comp it's an award for the best player per position.

Butler, Papley and even Wallis (who did not make the 40) were very unlucky.

Bontempelli as a half forward was a bit of a joke. Though I am a Bloods fan I would much rather Butler on the half forward line than the Bont who simply was not good enough to be named in the mids.

Ditto Danger. As opposed to Dusty who is terrific when played forward, Danger is far less so.

papley wasnt a hff. he was a foward pocket. HFF dont exist in todays game. they are just extra mids. 2 key fowards. 2 foward pockets. the flankers are mids.

according to the afl heatmap thing, danger got 52% of his possessions in the forward half.
dusty by comparison was 68%, and only 3 total (total, not %) possessions in the back 50 which imho puts him into genuine half forward territory.
Bontempelli is almost the same as danger, with 49% in the forward half, and also the most by a decent margin (13%) of the 3 in the back 50.

from stats and watching the game, dusty is the clear choice of the 3 if you had to choose just one for the HFF position. for the second spot between danger and bont, while their stats are similar watching the game you see that danger is the choice as he started forward some of the time wheres bont barely did. bont is really the egregious selection here, and martin being in the forward pocket (he shouldnt be) is as a result of them shoehorning bont to the hff. bont may well have deserved a spot in the AA but it should have been on the bench.

Danger gifted a HFF spot and then gifted the captaincy. complete farce.
At best if he couldnt crack the midfield he should have been on the bench.
And Boak should have been captain. Hes had a better season, on field in his natural spot, been a captain and still oozes leadership

Why should Papley feel robbed? He kicked just 7 goals over the last 9 games.

Still better than those picked in potential spot on the field - Martin, Bont and Danger, so can feel unlucky as he was in the 40 man squad, same as any other fwd not picked.

It makes sense to name say 2 teams to play against each other, even if one is presumably the better team. its only 4 more players than the current squad anyway, and it might be more interesting to hear the squad and then debate who makes each team than who makes the squad purely for tokenistic recognition.

It makes sense to name say 2 teams to play against each other, even if one is presumably the better team. its only 4 more players than the current squad anyway, and it might be more interesting to hear the squad and then debate who makes each team than who makes the squad purely for tokenistic recognition.

kinda like the All-NBA teams (they do 3). I wouldnt be against it

Like it too. All NBA have 3 teams.

Exactly, it's either best 22 players in the league or who is AA in their respective position. If you put that to a vote, the latter would win in a landslide YET the selectors cannot seem to grasp this.

If you close your eyes and imagine a world where every country plays Aussie Rules and that in 2 months there is a World Cup tournament, then it's no real stretch of the imagination that Patrick Dangerfield would be the captain of the Australian team.

Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi, David Beckham all captained their national teams at World Cups despite not captaining their own club and despite the presence of other club captains within the ranks of their national team squads.

The people who think AA captaincy must only be awarded to one of the club captains are fools. It's an honourary title which should always go to the most senior, decorated player who commands the most respect from the other players. The bloke you'd actually want to lead the team out onto the ground if they were playing an international match.

It's not picking an AS squad for a world cup, it's picking the best team based solely on their 2020 output.

Either way though I would still much rather the bloke with the better form who is an actual leader and just led his team to the top of the ladder over some bloke being gifted it because he is a household name and looks good on paper
