A little bit about George Arden:

His 1843 essay, the Civilization of Aborigines, called for Indigenous children to be taken from their families and then put to work under the domain of "moral and sober masters".

Then...
He died on the Ballarat goldfields in 1854 from "suffocation, the result of intemperance, having fallen into a trench full of water".

Intemperance means drunk btw

From what I know of my own family history dying drunk in a ditch was quite common back then.

Noting your astute use of parentheses, I guess it's a shame that we as a civilized society, didn't think to take white children from their families and enslave them with moral and sober black masters to save them from growing up immoral and dying drunk and syphilitic in a ditch.

Just name it after this chap then…..James Gardiner….perfect recognition to a an individual who not only founded the club as well as being a historic figure in public / community service in the then city of North Melbourne….heck he was mayor for a period of time…….About time he gets some other recognition outside the club….problem solved.

I imagine it was also quite common back then to make disparaging remarks about aboriginal people

Changing the names of things for retrospective sake is wrong and becoming a disease in our society. No one wants the change other than a select few minority.
Meh, don’t think it’s that clear cut. Need to balance the clear historical overreactions vs kids going to the Rolf Harris school of performing arts or the Bill Cosby center for excellence 😂

After the original extensive (and expensive) public competition in 2017 the new station at Arden was to be named North Melbourne.
Yeah go Roos!

And then, the current North Melbourne station would be renamed West Melbourne because not even Victorian politicians would allow two stations on the same line to have identical names.

But then.., the renaming of the old North Melbourne station was kiboshed due the previously unconsidered confusion it would cause the public.

And so.. the new station didn't get a new name, it just kept it's pre name working title, Arden.

So if it is changed, after Arden turned out to be a racist drunk hypocrite, it doesn't quite fall into the category of old landmarks changing names due to woke sensibilities. More of a pre- opening naming wobble.

The original public suggestions included:

* Station McStationface

* Bunnings Sausage

* Smashed Avo

* Vegemite

* Arden Schwarzenegger

* D'oh-main

* Joan Kirner

* Dusty Martin

* Ron Barassi

* Winterfell

* Ogdenville

* Ramsay St

Might be one problem, namely this pre-existing station on the same network:

But if we just move this here and that over there, voila we can still honour a club legend:

‘Plan-busting proposal’ for 57-storey tower in North Melbourne

The Arden precinct in North Melbourne could soon be home to a towering 57-storey apartment block, almost triple the approved height limit for the area.

An application was lodged this week with the state government for a tower containing 609 apartments, 6772 square metres of office space and 2278 square metres of retail space, above a three-level basement.

Actually, this is interesting.

This diagram from the Victorian Planning Authority;

1) Has no second oval
2) Lists our club as the 'North Melbourne Recreation Reserve'
3) Seems to indicate the original plan of open green spaces in the area has been scrapped

Of course it has….

As has been stated so many times in here, they have to pay off the multi billion dollar station that has now been built for no reason.

That tower lies on land until a few months ago was part of the new RMH/RWH.

Crazy when people in here celebrated the hospital being canned as a good thing.

As was stated, we are about to be built out and it’s likely going to impact on our ability to keep up with the jones’ in terms of a high performance facility.

I envisage some time in the next 20 years the state government offering us some sort of deal to move out of Arden St into Melton or somehwhere of the like with a $50-$100m facility attached to it, to move out of Arden St so they can sell the last parcel of land in what is earmarked as the next residential development hotspot (along with Fishermans bend).

I’d argue our training base probably resides on the most valuable piece of real estate of any other team in the comp, including Richmond and Collingwood in terms of urban planning impact..

What are you on about. That map shows no buildings are planned in the area of the proposed second oval.

Uhhh... perhaps you're forgetting what the original proposed second oval expansion looked like;

generally speaking, Reserves and actually reserved... the fishermans bend area was never a reserve. had a car manufacturing plant, electrical substation and various other industrial enterprises there.

Uhh that's extremely consistent with the VPA map.

Nah mate. The space for the second oval has been zoned for new building construction.

Let me demonstrate with a shitty gif;

Here's another diagram from the VPA - no second oval shown. (And certainly no space for future construction of new grandstands).
