Roos's assessment of certain youngsters

SYDNEY Swans coach Paul Roos says only the refusal of some of his youngsters to follow instructions has prevented him swinging the selection axe for Saturday's crucial clash against Hawthorn at the SCG.

Tad harsh I would of thought could of possibly said this to them personally and kept it all under wraps...

Does explain a few questions though

Wow i can't remember Roosy being so frank and flat with criticism of players (aside from Nick Davis perhaps). He sounds very frustrated himself.

Very interesting.

Sounds like they have been told all this privately, several times too. The fact he talks about them making excuses seems to say he's tried to talk sense into them.

Looks like there might be some shock delistments at the end of the year.

Re: Roo's assessment of certain youngster's

Greatest lot of crap i have read on our website. If these players don't deserve a game in the seniors, what about some players there already

Clearly they are more deserving than the players who aren't getting a game. Bedford, for someone who demands so much, are you just going to settle for someone crapper and less deserving just to satisfy your dislike of certain players?

If someone came in who wasn't ready and played crap, you'd be the first to call for their heads.

Re: Roo's assessment of certain youngster's

What about our almighty leadership group, i thought they were the be all and end all. This is not good for our club at this stage of the season, this should have been kept in house. Interesting that he said they have received plenty of e-mails from people outside the club. Imagine if he read BF.

I corrected your English spelling and grammar for you!;)

Please, if you are a culprit, stop sending Roos emails! Your namesake may have won a Brownlow, but he hasn't coached at team to an unexpected flag! YOU, know feck all except your hobby, rockin', horse!

"You get emails from people outside the club [saying] 'why aren't you playing this person, why aren't you playing that person?'" Roos said.

They'll chuck up homesickness, or the bloke doesn't kick the ball to me, or I'm playing in the Canberra league, or we've got too many top-ups, but I don't buy that. They might be selling it, but I'm not buying it."

Roos 2010 attitude towards youngsters = Eade's 2002 attitude towards youngsters.

Unnecessary crap from Roos.

Can't believe how precious some people are on here.... this is exactly the reason why vez and others aren't getting a game, Roos and co. developed a fantastic culture and these "kids" are deciding to put in 95% instead of 110%

If people think these words are too harsh then go support an amateur league or something because we are all obviously ignorant about what it takes to become an AFL player, me included.

I'm glad he has come out and said it now because it gives these kids another month to decide whether they want to play or not.

Also one could assume that perhaps Roos knows what Longmire is going to be like after he leaves and if the kids don't lift their commitment then Horse is going to come in swinging that axe.

Great comments Mcveigh. It seems clear to me that all players know exactly what is expected of them, and what they need to do to progress themselves to be up for selection in the seniors.

Gordon has clearly done that, as has Meredith and Reid. They have done what the coaching staff has asked of them.

As for who Roos is talking about, you'd have to think it'd be from these guys: Veszpremi, Barlow... possibly Currie, O'Dwyer.

I doubt Johnston would be included in this group.

It was supposed to be a development year for Johnston (especially after missing most of last year), The fact he has been pushing for selection should be seen as a bonus.

And Veszpremi he won't be delisted this year as he is contracted until the end of NEXT year, Lets just hope he can get it together and perform up to his talent

Re: Roo's assessment of certain youngster's

The Bloods culture is dead and we need to move on from it.

Otherwise it will become the 'Shinboner Spirit' crap that North fans had to put up with.
No. This is about maintaining the Bloods' culture. If you don't stick to the team game plan you are not contributing meaningfully to the team. The whole has to be greater than the sum of the parts. That's why it's a team sport. Individual brilliance is not enough to win premierships. Pyke, Meredith, Jetta, TDL, Rohan have all managed to do it. It is not an unreasonable demand. I would think it has a lot to do with defensive pressure, 2nd efforts and running to position. I'm sure it is similar to raising a family. You have to impose the values at an early stage in everyone's development.

Re: Roo's assessment of certain youngster's

i don't think we should play the kids for the sake of it especially with finals on the cards but, if Gordan's done well enough to be an emergency he should be in the side aswell as reid. There's too many passengers in the senior side atm and they continue to get games, why?

So mereidth's gets dropped for a couple of poor games, yet shaw and a few others are still in the starting 18. what message does this send to the group except, "if you're young and have a poor game you'll be dropped, but if you're a senior player you can continue to coast along as much as you like." it's been happeneding all year, shit performance, young player gets dropped yet senior player who's performed poorly for weeks still gets a game gifted to them. The senior players are the ones who need to get the hard message.

we defintely should be going for finals (the way things look will be the last time in a while) but if the coaching staff honestly believe some of these fringe players (gordan, reid, johnston) can't offer more then the crap an out of form shaw and co are offering up on a regular basis, then we're in for a very long 5 years. especially if these guys continue to get free games regardless of form over the years to come.

roos has been great but i really hope horse is a bit stronger on the selection table, no other team would have just made 1 change over 2 thumpings.

I don't think anyone here understands elite football, I played for Vic Country for two seasons in Juniors. Also for my district, I had the skills and all the desired template to be in the team but they weren't going to let me "just" play... I had to push myself each training session to a point where I had to vomit before they gave me a tick... They want to see your determination, so when there is 10 minutes left in a match and you cant feel your legs, so you just dont throw your hands on your hips and watch the game.

They rather you attempt to run and end up wobbly legged then not attempting at all... It's a mental thing, everyone does it. Young players these days expect to be handed this to them just because they were great players in the Junior ranks... Sorry boys, Roos knows what he is doing. And this will make or break these guys into a sucsess or to the dole queue.

I doubt Johnston would be included in this group.

I think he might. Refer to the puff piece earlier in the year about his poor training attitude

This shows the folly of him making such criticisms and not naming the culprits. You risk slandering the name of the whole reserves team. The only ones we can rule out are Gordon, Reid and Dennis-lane as they have been selected inthe 25

Don't be too harsh on Bedford, for once, I agree with him.

I'm glad Roos is leaving at the end of the year as i don't like his attitude at the moment.

Totally agreed. This just smells like the end of Eade's tenour when he wouldnt play none of the younger players, like someone else has said.

I cannot wait for Longmire to take over with fresh ideas and hopefully a fresh approach to our game plan.

Good thinking. Lets just hand out games to players because they are young.

Fact is there was heaps of youth in the side before injuries. Craig Bird, Nick Smith, Gary Rohan, Brett Meredith, Lewis Jetta plus Hannebery, Jack, White, Mumford who are all in the side because they've earned it.

Fact is, we were flying and on top of the ladder when all players were fit, and there wasn't a Veszpremi, Currie or O'Dwyer in sight.

Yep, let's keep handing out games to players who won't ever make it in the AFL or have passed by use by date. IE: Bevan and Moore.

Look at Hannebery. I wouldn't have been surprised, if he was feeling the same way as Veszpremi, Johnston and others, if he weren't in the seniors.

Didn't Roos and the Swans say, that Johnson was ready to play AFL about a month ago? If he is ready, play him. Let's see if he can match it with the big boys. Other teams, don't have any hesitation in playing their 1st round draft picks, but we seem to be hesitant too, apart from Lewis Jetta and Gary Rohan.

Moore, Bevan and the likes will not win us a premiership down the track. We need to blood more youngsters now, in order to catch up to Geelong or Collingwood.

I think that johnston and vez would be played and roos genuinely wants to play then but not just because they are young. He wont play young guys unless they are in awesome form and doing everything the coaches ask because there is such a big gap b/w canberra and the AFL.
