Player Watch Rory Sloane - Retired

a few weeks ago there was a photo on the AFC FB page of Sloane and Tex in the rooms after a game with their kids. The post title was 'this is what it's all about'. That's our club, they believe that rubbish. It's great they're happy in life, many aren't. But I couldn't give a fig whether they have kids and as a football supporter, them having kids is totally irrelevant. What it's all about is team success, club employees making the right decisions to give the playing group the best possible chance of experiencing the ultimate success. Our club is a soulless corporation and until they start measuring themselves solely against footy success, we'll never be anything different.

That the player and club both allow these scenarios to play out is shameful at best.
It happens at all clubs, players that go on a year too long. It’s also not on the player to make this call, why would you give up 100s of thousands for dollars if you didn’t have to? Riewoldt and Cotchin have been quite poor most of the season at Richmond, with the occasional decent performance, but they continue to get games even though finals are unlikely. Everyone wanted Tex to retire in 2020, but he then recovered to have his best ever 3 seasons after it, so maybe the club thought that could be the case for Sloaney as well? Who knows, but at this point it’s clear Sloaney is done at this level and isn’t getting back to 2017 form again.

I'm not sure who's worse, Thommo in his last year or Sloane right now.
thommo in his last year played in the SANFL except for 1 game. this is far worse

if we were going to make decisions (ps It's not a hard one), then we wouldn't have continued playing him as 1 of our 4 mids. The coaches value what he's doing in there. Let that sink in.
This is clearly not right evidenced by the fact he has barely played in the middle for most of this year. As the kids have tired, he’s been getting more time.

We have better options in the squad to go into the guts. It has been unfair on Rory to put him in there, he will always do what he is asked but if we came to the decision nearly 2 years ago that his time in the middle was done then we shouldn’t be doing it now.

That is squarely on Van Berlo and is why I think we would be better off moving him out of the miss line coach position. We should go hard for an ex coach to do this role as it is our biggest deficiency.

To be fair, we don’t have the cattle we need in the middle to be successful but if you think “ Jones or Sloane in at the CBAs?” and the answer 10/10 times is the 33 year old then you should go.

I hope Sloane gets to retire and get his fan fair hopefully for the Showdown but the time has come for us to make some very hard decisions going forward if we want to start pushing up the ladder.

His gut running has left him too. I thought he’d be handy on a wing because of that. When Michalanney had to leave Green after Green took a mark at 60 to run with Sloane’s opponent running into an open 50. Green then has no one on the mark and kicks the goal from 50.

The 250th carry on backfired. It will be interesting to see what happens with selection this week. If we’re out of finals contention, it would be nice to see him play one last game in Round 23 against the Swans.

Barely played in the middle? Which games have you been watching? He started on the wing, but basically after the Richmond loss he’s played more middle than anything else. Froggy posted CBA attendances and clearances today

so far it's the same. Thommo also crawled to the line as one of the 4 primary mids to end the final year of his last long contract. Sloane is currently doing the same. Sloane's undeserved extension might be where he's told he's playing SANFL.

i think i understand the point you are trying to make but having family around and supporting a players extended family is crucial (see Racheles and Solis comments when extending contracts out for years). Having Collingwoods Mums join the team circle on Mothers Day - does that make them soulless? Horks, the family club, over their 4 premierships - soulless?

Its just a weird take

is that what "it's all about" though? Plenty, hundreds even, of captions to that image that paints the picture you want it to. It speaks to our disconnection between club employees and the reason we actually exist.

Look the club has real issues that need addressing - all the obvious ones like continuing elite talent acquisition (esp elite mids, Tex replacement), financial (dwindling crowds, new home base probable cost blow outs and borrowing money with structurally higher I/R now 4% higher than when they first started the modelling for a replacement home 3-10 years ago), performance away from home. Just calling a club soulless for involving family members is not really a big issues IMO but anyway probably doesnt need any more debating from my perspective if we philosophically differ on this issue
