Player Watch Rory Sloane - Retired

Heard someone on the radio suggesting that 'Sloane has earned the right to decide when he wants to go'.

No actually he hasn't it's the Adelaide Football Club, not the Rory Sloane Football Club - the club was there before he got there and will be there when he has long gone. Absolutely absurd to suggest a player of his calibre can dictate terms on when he should leave.

And now Rowey to Smith after a ******* text “it has to be Rory’s decision, he’s earnt that right”.

Senior player Smith who will be in a similar position soon “absolutely, he’s earnt that right”

I found that text absolutely cringe, Rory has no right whatsoever to dictate when he retires - he's been a good player hes not what I would classify as a club great.

Smith's response was fine, he's hardly going to say 'yeah we need to bin him off'.

Actually according to Nicks a few weeks ago, "Rory is the football club". His words, not mine.

He hasn't even had a that good a career

Whilst I have liked a lot of what I have seen from nicks. Comments like this are just huge red flags....
TBF ....these comments are reflective of Sloane's career contributions .....not potentially his last year

Did you hear the massive wraps given by horse about Franklin .....and Franklin has had a very poor final year

It's what Coaches do when discussing their club champions .....Nicks will say similar things about Tex .....what was he going to do, run a player like Sloane down in public ......cmon, seriously ??

What a load of crapola, Sloane has been an absolute warrior for the AFC but clearly he's no longer that player and his time should be up.
Unfortunately all the signs from the club point to him getting another year unless he makes the decision to retire himself and nothing Sloane has said himself indicates that's his thinking.

Nah the way to build club culture is kick the sh1t out of club legends on the way out 😂

Have we won Mcleod back yet ? .....upset at getting his money supply turned off .....it's important to have these Champions back & visible, like Modra

Imagine being a p1ssant fan and saying sloane hasn’t had a good career

Or not acknowledging he’s had some good contributions this year

I don’t want him to play on either next year but why revise and kick the sh1t out of a club legend

It’s the clubs role to now not offer him a list spot
There needs to be a "Man Conversation " with him about the best way to retire.

Fan farewell game against Sydney is ideal.

He deserves that.

Sloane has had a very good career and that’s why it’s sad to see him go on like this.
He's not that bad this year .....he's definitely fringe 22-25 ranked player .....but fairly typical of all the performances of players at other Clubs, who have retired this week

What you don't want to see, is that player that goes on 1 year too long ......timing is right now for Sloane, the game is demanding speed

Listened to the Kelly interview from yesterday, language has certainly changed. No reassurance that he will be signed on, talked about how well he’s done considering, said we are working through next year. That could be retirement, sanfl player, coach

Does anyone here want to put their hand up and say that Rory Sloane has deserved to be our highest paid player for the past 5 seasons?..

Rory sloane pre round 7 2017 was great..

Everything, including some unfortunate injuries, went downhill from that point onwards and never recovered.. yet he’s been our highest paid player for 5 year running..

Now here we are in 2023 and it sounds like rory still thinks he deserves more..

He wants to play on?.. Ok, sure.. but he can join the Rookie list and play on on minimum wages.

He can consider his overpayment for the last 5 years as part of his package for next year.

It absolutely is Rory's right to determine when he retires, but it's also the clubs right to say "We don't think you can go anymore, so we are not offering you a contract". There should be zero obligation from a club to continue signing and playing a player just because they don't want to give it up.

So Rory has to decide if he wants to risk "retiring" because no one else wants to sign him if we turn him down and potentially have his career end that way, or if he wants to be given a farewell tour and go out on a high note.

Sounds very much like the vibe around the captaincy

'Rory we are making a change of captain with an eye to the future '

' I'm not giving it up I am a fighter and I will do all I can to keep it's

' that's your right to think that but Dawse will be captain next year's

What are the headline tickets on Sloane's career? A one time all Australian What made him an "absolute warrior"? What sacrifices did he ever make for the club?

This is not the territory of club legend who gets to write his own ticket. He's not even top 10 in our not that long history.
