Only change I would make at this stage would be to switch Hogan and Gawn. I think the extra ruck support would be beneficial for Clark to settle in. Also, I want the 1st years to earn their place in the team.

Unless of course Hogan trains down whole housing estates in the preseason... :rainbow:

The Fact Hogan won the B&F over other Demons players that played in the VFL this year and it was his First year isn't enough to earn him a spot in our nest 22 considering Dawes and clarke spent the majority off-field with injuries?

Apart from Nathan Jones, Jesse Hogan is the first name down on the best 22 team sheet.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of the kid and I'm super excited to see him pulling in pack marks, kicking goals, smashing through packs and burning off defenders. I can't wait. I'm looking forward to him exploding into the preseason games.

Roosy has said Hogan will have to earn his spot, if he trains hard and plays well in practice matches I imagine he would start for round 1

I very much like this format. Mind if I put it in the first post?

Liked the look of the one posted on the AFL website:

B Lynden Dunn, James Frawley, Dean Terlich
HB Colin Garland, Tom McDonald, Jack Grimes
C Bernie Vince, Nathan Jones, Jack Watts
HF Jack Trengove, Chris Dawes, Jeremy Howe
F Jesse Hogan, Mitch Clark, Viv Michie
R Mark Jamar, Matt Jones, Jack Viney
INT Dom Tyson, Daniel Cross, Jordie McKenzie
SUB Jimmy Toumpas
Like the look of this side, actually looks like a decent team. Only change id make is McKenzie (think Cross is the better tagger) for Kennedy Harris. Move Michie to the pine and Kennedy Harris to the forward pocket.
Any Melbourne Team with Matt Jones or Dean Kent in it scares me. Yes, they try hard, but their skills are very average. Dont think they are in our 'best 22'

My latest go at it:
B: Terlich - Frawley - Garland
HB: Grimes - McDonald - Toumpas
C: Viney - Watts - Vince
HF: Howe - Clark - Cross
F: Hogan - Dawes - Kent
R: Jamar - N Jones - Trengove
I/C: Tyson - Michie - Fitzpatrick - L Dunn

Emg: Fitzpatrick - Strauss - Blease
Anyone know how Tapscott's preseason has been?

EDIT: On another note, Michie for the Rising Star award mightn't be too bad of a bet. Should play 22 games and if he's as good as the Freo board say he is combined with being a mature body, he'll be in with a shot. Tyson, Toumpas and Viney are all just barely ineligible by 3-4 games.

Didn't mind the AFL Site team at all, it was pretty much spot on. The problem was that the midfield appeared way too slow with both Cross and Mckenzie on the bench. Need some more pace in there, not sure where from though.

No chance JKH would play round 1... Very slight frame.

On Tapscott, he was on light duties on Friday so not sure if that means rehab group or just having a rest day. Either way he will probably get injured soon enough if he's not already haha.

Jake Neade played nearly every game for Port last year, with the slightest of frames, 68kgs if i remember correctly.

If the kid does the right things (chases and tackles) he's gotta be in there for me. We need forward pressure, ASAP.

Neade played for Port last year and is pretty comparable. Important thing to not is that Jay isnt actually a goal sneak as much as a kind of energetic link man in the 50.

Anyway, my effort:

Dunn - Frawley - Terlich
McDonald - Garland - Grimes

Vince - Cross - Watts

Trengove - Dawes - Howe
Hogan - Clark - Blease

Jamar - Jones - Viney

Tyson - Matt Jones - Michie
Toumpas

Question marks around Dunn, Terlich and Blease. Matt Jones maybe too.

The rest is pretty much pencilled in.

Kent would make my team.

See Kent and Toump as mids long term but maybe have a look at them developing at HB this year.
Salem as well.

Grimes - Frawley - Garland
Kent - McDonald - Toumpas
Tyson - Cross - Watts
Trengove - Dawes - Vince
Hogan - Clark - Howe
Jamar - Jones - Viney

Salem - Matt Jones - Michie
Evans

Question marks around Terlich? You're having me on right?

Terlich was one of our best players last year, and indeed one of he better players in his position in all of the AFL. He finished 3rd in the B&F in his first season, has tremendous courage and uses the ball well. 2nd year blues are a good chance obviously, but Toumpas, Kent and Salem are well behind him.

No.

You have no question marks about Terlich defensively. Turns it over too but that might not always be his fault but defensively, HFF should look forward to kicking bags.

Love Terlich. ****s up on occasions but only because he takes the game on, he gives us an attacking option coming out of defence. Hard as a cats head, goes when its his turn, tackles hard. Dont know what there isnt to love about him?

When you said HFF I thought you were referring to me...

I can't actually think of that many forwards who have had a big day on Terlich.

I'm really happy that for the most part (hogan aside), we don't have any draftees in our "best 22".

I think you'll find that by R1 Fitzy will be ahead of Dawes, both in terms of team structure and value. Also expect Dom Barry to turn heads. Will go sprinting past Blease!

Simply because it's not necessary, for once! Though I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing - O'Meara, Scully, Trengove, Wines, Heppell and co could have played round 1 in a premiership side. Our draftees though haven't shown enough to warrant it I think, and unlike with Toumpas and Viney this year, we're not relying upon them to be stars from the first game!

With regard to Fitzpatrick, I do agree that he might be ahead in team structure, but not sure about value to the side. Dawesy offers a lot in terms of leadership and effort which I think a lot of us tend to fail to appreciate.

What about Vince, Michie and Cross? I know they are trades, but we traded picks, so in effect they are draftees.

The part about Fitzy is interesting - and I don't totally agree, but I sure as hell don't disagree. I think Fitzy has the opportunity to become a (how shall I put it) Big Name Player for us (like Mitch or Dawes are/were looked upon), but I don't think he'll necessarily push Dawes out in regards to structure. You can have Dawes, clark, hogan and fitzy all on the ground at the one time, but Dawes will have to play as a smaller flanker rather than a tall forward. In essence, I guess I mean that he won't be playing as a tall marking option, but more of a use his body and provide constant pressure type flanker which would allow the smaller pockets to hit the packs and/or sneak a few as they do.

Hope that all came out right. After seeing dawes play last season, (and I know it's kinda like comparing chalk and cheese in comparison to Neeld & Roosy) but he kinda naturally plays that role anyway and roams up the wing a bit. Fitzy at CHF, Hogan on the other flank, with Clark at FF and a couple of good little pockets - it's gonna be easy for us to play them all at once.

I'm happy for any draftee to get a game round 1 as long as they train impeccably well, impress in the preseason and push harder than others for a spot in the round 1 team.

Guys like M. Jones and Terlich were so good for us in 2013 and I expect them to improve in their second year and fight for their spots. Don't doubt their improvement just because they are mature aged, if anything the increased competition may push them to even better heights
