Used his body well when moved into the middle. Actually had an impact, whilst Worpel was completely anonymous, had less touches, less clearances, half as many contested touches and gave up some mind numbing frees.

JOM was far from good, but was better than Worpel who was clear WOG.
But Worpel had more inside 50s, more metres gained, less turnovers, more rebound from 50s. Plus Worpel disposal efficiency was 92% to Omearas 67%. Both had bad games, but considering Omeara more experienced and the captain for the day, I expect more.

The problem with Worpel is he was a turnstile in the centre and not a big clearance winner and barely won a contest. And when he went forward he was pushed under the ball too easily when it was kicked to him and he conceded intercept marks. Happened three times in the first half.

One thing about the game style, is when you take it on, you're more often than not in the game.

It's the game style we've been crying out for, for years. And we're only just getting started...
Just got to be comfortable that we will get opened up , possible badly by the really good sides .

Which I am tbh while we develop.

Super happy with that, our sloppiness is to be expected but for me the key thing was the Gunners & Sicily return. Sometimes it takes many weeks for players to get back into it, but with the way the game went, Sicily got plenty of exposure back and ditto Gunston up fwd. I was always confident Sicily would return to form quickly, it was gunners i was concerned about, but i think today's game was exactly what he needed to get back into the swing of things.
Newcombe = impact. Loved it when titch took a mark and gave the hands off to the running Newk early in the game - not something Titch usually does, I took it as a sign of respect from Titch to Newk.
Mitch Lewis hands were great the Lewis vs Larkey sub-plot was firmly in Lewis favour.

We got the 4pts but the game also highlighted some things for us to hang our hats on and exposed a few things for us to work. Really happy with that

also, as happy as I am with the win and how we played, let's be real, our ball use and composure under pressure was pretty average
This was the case for most of the teams, no better example than 2 of the top teams Brisbane and Port. Round 1 games are always sloppy. Day, Bramble and Breust are 3 of our more classier ball users.

Yeah look, It sounds like I'm defending Worpel for having a amazing game. I was disappointed in him, but he equally had as many good 1% moments that people are giving Omeara credit for. I had pumped him up to have a really good year and to elevate himself into elite status. Let's hope it was just a rough day and he can bounce back.

Think people are being a bit tough on Worps tbh. When he had the ball he actually made things happen. Wasn’t given much mid time so disposal number was low but I personally thought he was fine.

Newcombe & CJ = stars.

The poise of Ward & MacDonald was on display, can’t wait to see them after they get 50 games under their belts.

Welcome back Jack!

Both had 3 clangers.

Metres gained is a stat that can flatter players. Worpel also had more metres gained than CJ (all three were under 300m). Bombing it long ineffectively can = metres gained.

JOM had 10 contested and 5 clearances.
Worpel had 5 contested touches and 3 clearances.

But most importantly Worpel was the common denominator in the midfield when North were strolling out of there in the first quarter. That changed once he was taken out of there. Credit for his disposal efficiency though.

Good game guy's, always a pleasure to play the Hawks, except when we lose. Some good players up forward and some nice movers around the contest. I'm not sure what we're going to do about the sloppy ball use other than ride it out, but a good performance overall. I can't recall the last time we actually won a round one game, apart from the fact that it's getting a bit long in the tooth. Anyway, congratulations, too switched on when it mattered.

Don’t usually watch coach press conferences, I usually tend to find them pretty boring.

But thought I’d check out Sam first up and wowee it was good viewing. Love the way he talks. Got the warm fuzzies listening to him to talk about getting everyone into the circle to sing the song. As well as him talking about letting Chad be Chad.

Wasn't given much mid time because North walked it out of the middle every time he went in the 1st quarter

Bloody enjoyed that.

Gonna be a bumpy road but we had some handy players in Day, Bruest, Impey and Bramble not on the park today.

Gunners, Sic and CJ are known quantities and will be even better as they settle back in.

Really need our leaders in JOM, Titch, Wingard and Worps to switch on and show the kids the way. Ward, CMac and Duke… fair bit to work with there.

Hope we get more glimpses of it clicking this season. Lewis, Gunston, Bruest, Moore and Wingard could really feast on it with quality delivery from Day, CJ, Bramble, Ward and Duke.

North had the edge for much of the game but ran out of legs. We have a lot of endurance runners and a lot of midfield rotations. Those things counted in the final quarter. Plenty of upside for North.

AFL website are stating Omeara had 5 turnovers to Worpels 4 and I wouldn't say having 2 more clearances makes another dominant over the other.

Anyway, just agree to disagree on who was poorer. Both had mares today and hopefully were just one offs. I think Worpel definitely is having issues playing with both Mitchell and Omeara in the team.

Brisbane-port game was a humid game at the Gabba. Never going to have great skills.

A dry day at the mcg and we really should have been better than we were. Saying that North were atrocious also.

Will be interesting to see if our skills improve as the year goes on. We do have a lot of poor ball users though.

This sort of stuff started to resonate at Box Hill and Sam's brought it to the HFC. It's really good.

Seems to have that similarity to his coaching as a parent from the 2010's has, less strict and embraces individuality. Might be small but allowing long sleeves and powerade throwing is a big step away from Clarkson controlling those situations

I would post this in the Sam Mitchell thread but I have been blocked by the bigfooty moderator on this Hawthorn board without any explanation.

Sam Mitchell talks too much about individual players in public. It goes against 50 plus years of Hawthorn culture to never individualise.

I have mentioned this previously... and at that time the moderator who banned me from the Sam Mitchell thread said that Sam never did this. He mocked me for my opinion, too.

In today's coaches press conference, the journalists quickly worked out that Sam was an open book on players. Sam was willing to make comments on each and every player. So the journalists kept asking about each player.

What happens when we lose? What happens when Sam has to lie about players?

Sam, please, just DONT TALK ABOUT THEM INDIVIDUALLY IN PUBLIC!!!!!!!!!!

i.e. when Clarkson was ever asked about a single player by a journalist, he would defer the question by mentioning 10 other players in the team.

Sam needs to put an end to it.
