Review Round 1, 2022 vs Brisbane

Flippant of the coach to argue injuries cost us the game.

They didn't help. But we actually played 10 to 15 minutes of decent footy for the first time to get a four goal lead, then decided to NOT stomp on Brisbane's throat nor plunge the dagger into their heart.

No, we decided to shut up shop and play safe to preserve our lead.
That tactic never works. And it failed again last night.

If we'd played to win, we may have held on. To play to not lose, any time the oppo scores, we don't respond with anything to maintain the margin, and hence we lose.

Best for me:
Houston
Burton
Drew
McKenzie
Bonner
Wines
Boak.

H/M:
Jonas
DBJ
Alliir
Amon.

Kick up the quoit:
Rozee
Marshall
Lycett
MG
SPP
Finlayson
Motlop
Gray (injury probably).

Our back half kept us in the game, and most played well.
Forwards hopeless, but delivery and game tactics were farcical - what's new??????
Mids generally good.
Rucks - meh!

Hopefully an improvement versus Hawkville 🤔

Butter could do with learning sometimes you can just do the basics and get it right rather than trying to be a superhero with every disposal.
He does just about everything right except for looking for the cute handball shite, a good coach stamps that shit out now before it's an ongoing drama.

I didn’t understand why Lycett spent so little time up forward yesterday to help what was an under-sized and flaky tall forward set-up. Similarly, Hayes would have offered more playing as second ruck and resting forward as Marshall or Finlayson.
No-one at the club rates Hayes as a resting forward, but I thought it had been something he did well as an U18.

He's not without forward craft Hayes in fact he has more idea about leading than Pistol ever had.

Mate, I would’ve thought quite a few supporters would’ve got themselves a reality check about the importance of Dixon tonight. All 3 key forwards were very poor tonight and for me the key reason we lost.

I think I’ve finally lost my patience with Marshall. Soft as butter tonight.

Charlie at least has a crack.

People are dreaming if they think the three tall forwards from last night can sustain a forward line for a full season without Dixon. Mitch is the man with the most talent, but his maximum if he fulfils his potential in my opinion is a player like Jack Gunston. He's not a number one key forward to build a forward line around, unless you go down the path of playing three agile key forwards in the future, but that requires a competent forwards coach which we don't have.

Marshall is Marshall, there is upside there but he's got to impact games when he's not in possession rather then just float around. I think he may get the chance to play what best suits him which is CHB as I feel Aliir will miss some games as his injury looked nasty.

Finlayson is what he is, a inconsistent player who can do the amazing every now and then. He has a lot to work on if he wants to cement a spot in our best 22 when Dixon returns, his game last night was worse then Marshall's, I also thought Mitch was poor as well if not on a par with Marshall who cops all the heat in a poor performance.

Dixon is still our number one forward, people can say what they like about him but last night proved that. I'd go as far as to say if Dixon plays with all the injuries that happened we'd have won that last night.

It's because we want to play the same set up we plan on playing when Dixon is back.

The problem is that setup sucks.

We need to move on from Dixon at FF.

Dixon needs to be FP ruck and then Hayes can come in for either Dixon or Lycett when they are injured or out of form.

The thing about not rating Hayes as a forward, is he couldnt possibly have offered less than our actual forwards did.

He Holds that mark and Drew decides no to dish up a short little ship kick when running into goal and kick the goal himself.

There's a 2 goal turn around in our favour. How much did we lose by ?

Note SPP off to the left, or he handballs over the player in front of him, or kicks the goal himself, instead he kicks it to the last Brisbane defender, basically picked the worst option available. Was he timid? or is this game plan driven? Would love to know that answer.

Helps if our last player plays in front too - I guess he was thinking Drew will be going for goal.

Or that player - Connor Rozee - was doing what Port forwards get trained to do, which is play from behind and don’t lead at the ball carrier. I hate Bassett.

1 - Kick the Goal (or at least back yourself in and have a try)
2 - Kick wide to SPP, who is generally a reliable set shot, can take his to seconds and give our mids a rest.
3 - Forward handball to Rozee who who can then have the shot.

Naaa, ill do the logical thing and have a little chip kick to the Brisbane defender.

I said before the game that the forward line looks ghastly on paper and it proved to be the case. We just don't have the forward line talent to be a contender.

Marshall is no good. The fan boys can say what they want but he sucks. If he was a Crows player we'd laugh at him endlessly.

Rozee is no good. Physically and mentally soft. And I'm starting to disagree with the idea that he actually does have talent, I think it's an illusion based on good looks, athleticism and draft number.

Finlayson is what he is. A third string key forward onto his second club.

Dixon, Motlop and Gray are all over 30. We can expect increasing injuries and deteriorating form from that trio.

Speaking of injuries, Fantasia is our most natural forward but he can never get out there.

Which leaves MG who has the talent to be a star but has played something like 40 games against men in his life. He still needs time.

It's a terrible line up. With everyone fit, you could dream of it being serviceable. But the reality is most weeks it will suck. Get used to it.

Definitely timid.

Clearly the influence of Clurey has rubbed off on the rest of the group. Just look at his body language there, tells it all.

How did it get like this though?

How did it get like this though?

Lots of factors.

Age - Dixon, Motlop and Gray getting old.

Injury - Fantasia always being injured.

Marshall not coming on and the gap to the next generation (Georgiades) taking time.

Rozee not coming on.

Dumb decision to trade Ladhams.

I call BS on Rozee playing injured for two years. If the ankle/foot was serious he would have been sent off for surgery in the off season. The kid needs some tough love & should be dropped for his own good, not thrown onto the back line to accumulate cheap possessions. As for comparisons to Wingard, Chad might have been a sook at times, but at least he could win his own ball, turn a game off his own boot, & consistently deliver 20 possession, 2 goal performances. Rozee is full of himself & has achieved nothing in his career so far, despite his potential.

The Ladhams trade now looks disastrous given the liability of Lycett, who got dominated by a couple of mediocre rucks. Heaven help us when he comes up against the AFLs best, it will be a one sided massacre. No pressure Hayes, but your time has come.

Our forward structure might be shambolic, but that doesn’t excuse the likes of Marshall, Finlayson, & Mitch for not getting down & dirty & finding other ways to influence the game. You can’t just stand around & shy away from getting involved. Demand the ball, offer some leads further up the ground to help your mates out, put some body contact on to open up some space.

Excuses.

Even when weve had players at their peak weve had shit efficiency inside 50.

The structure, gameplan and development of forwards is atrocious and probably league worst.

I don't disagree, just pointing out that we also increasingly have the factor that the talent isn't there either.

The intention was to hit up a leading Rozee who went, and then inexplicably decided to stay put. I'm assuming it was because he could barely run or he expected Drew to know he would double back

Chad's actually a proper footballer who can always find a way to impact the game, even if he's been quiet or beaten by an opponent on the day. A goal here, a clever goal assist there, etc. Rozee is Mr Invisible. Actually, he's worse than that, because his attitude is sh*t and it probably infects others.
Wasn't a shit attitude ultimately the demise of Wingard?

If your culture is shit, which you alluded to earlier, there isn't any point in drafting talented players and expecting them to fulfil their potential.
