Review Round 1, 2022 vs Brisbane

Although admittedly I would have taken a two goal loss pre-game, I wasn't factoring in the fact that Brisbane were awful for the first 3 quarters. Part of it was due to our pressure, but they made a ton of unenforced errors. Once they actually began to hit targets, along with our tired legs, we were cooked.

For 3 quarters Port had the game for the most part on its terms. Midfield was playing well, the extra rotations through the midfield from my perspective made it appear that the players appeared to have fresher legs and were hitting the contests harder. Then with 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter they're 4 goals up and in typical Port fashion they put the cue in the rack thinking the game is won. Brisbane got back into the game at that point and from then on they had the momentum and Port couldn't turn it around. You would think after the prelim last year and the shit served up on the gold coast earlier this pre-season that the players would have been drilled into them regarding the concept of a full 4 quarter effort. But no, under Hinkley "close enough is good enough."

There's just no killer instinct with this team. What I saw last night was a team devoid of confidence in the final quarter who had absolutely no resilience in them to punch back when they got hit in the mouth.

Don't get me wrong, this team is going to win plenty of games against soft opponents this season. There's too much talent on the team no to do so. But against the top teams, I fully expect them to flounder once again.

On a more positive note, defence and midfield looked bloody good last night outside of Lycett. Brisbane have notoriously run rings around Port with their speed, but that wasn't an issue at all. Lachie Jones and Burton down back were very impressive (Jones more so once he got going in the 2nd quarter).

He was crap all last year

OK. Named best V West Coast Round 2 or 3. In the best v Richmond Round 4 when he did his knee. 16 weeks out - he was useless in those 16 weeks. In the best v Geelong Semi Final.

You sir, are crap.

Was pretty disappointed in Finlayson , looked as soft as Marshall with his attack on the ball.
Dont know how these guys can’t get into a decent position to at least make a contest . George struggles too .
I guess defenders try and take the dominant position as the ball comes in but surely you don’t just float around at the back of the hot spot .
Hopefully it won’t be too much longer until these guys can make an impact on a regular basis .
Yeah, someone said Adams had 11 intercept marks 😱
He's never taken that many over a whole season before that!!!
Watch the replay and you'll see our blokes standing around watching each other whilst Adams takes uncontested mark after uncontested mark.

**** even I could take 11 marks if no one competed against me 🙄

Make a bleeding contest Port.

The main problem with Lycett is that when he’s losing he completely drops his bundle and makes no contribution to the team effort.

To take one of numerous contrasting examples, Rowan Marshall was totally pantsed by Grundy at stoppages but kept putting himself in the game, kicking a goal, winning clearances, helping out in defence, and trying every way he could to stop Grundy being dominant around the ground.

That’s the norm for a losing ruckman - even Ladhams did it - getting smashed at stoppages but making an important contribution with goals or whatever. I can’t recall another ruckman who just disappears from the game as Lycett.

Thought brisbane played georgiades really well. Adams stopped his lead, run and jump at the ball which is his primary strength, not really the type to wrestle (just yet). You saw how dissapointed Adams was when he gave up that one mark. This is where Georgiades learns and must add another weapon to his game such as leading up higher on the ground to provide an outlet kick on the wing similar to what buddy does when he gets played this way.

Marshall copped their best defender and that says they rate you as the biggest threat. Got pantsed took one contested mark and goal and thats about it. Sums up his career.

Finlayson has never been a primary target always a third behind patton/cameron/himmelberg/riccardi etc.

So looking back we played 2 third forwards and a lead up as our key forwards

In a low scoring game where we scored 10 goals to Brisbane’s 11, somehow Marshall and Georgiades contributing 20% of our total means we are just making up the numbers this year. And neither of them could have played any worse, in conditions that didn’t suit any of our forwards - who are more accustomed to getting the second or third defender than the first.

It was a hot, finals like game. Daniher only got off the chain after Aliir got injured. Statistically we matched Brisbane in every area while missing Dixon, Fantasia and Bergman, and it was attrition from Gray, Duursma, Rozee and Aliir having stints on the bench that wore us down. I don’t buy the bullshit that if we were a premiership side we would still win that game - Brisbane is a top four side, playing at home in conditions they train in all summer.

There were decisions made that a premiership side wouldn’t make. But that can be fixed. Before the season started I was thinking that we need to find one or two mids that can consistently pull 25+ possessions to take the burden off of Boak and Wines - we have them in Houston and Butters.

Ask yourself this question - how many sides do you think will best Brisbane in Brisbane? Essendon, maybe. The Dogs have done it before. Melbourne definitely could. Richmond if they were playing at their best.

The point is, none of those teams could you point to and say “Yep, this should be an easy win for Brisbane.” For the past few years that’s exactly what we’ve been. Yes, a win would have been great, but a) you’re not going to win every game b) you’re certainly not going to win every away game and c) you’re not going to win every away game against a top four team.

What I wanted to see was a performance that said “Yeah, with the right personnel back and a good injury run we could give this thing a crack.” When we played Geelong at Kardinia and almost won (the Dixon 30 second game), even though we lost we still gained the belief that when the whips were cracking we could beat the Cats. I reckon we would have got the same belief against Brisbane from this game if we meet them in finals.

P.S Mitch Robinson is a grub.

Whose game did you value higher out of Boak vs Houston?

Our forwards let us down. Marking let us down especially contested marks (Marshall 😓) and forward entries were squandered. We also lacked forward defensive pressure.
Disappointed with Finlayson but first game etc. Keen to see him again next week.

Can we have a changes for round two thread . I tried to start one but I’m obviously not allowed

You mean like this one started by Schulzenfest

After going 4 goals up late in the 3rd, what changes did our brilliant coach make to preserve our lead and better our chances of winning the game.

We just can’t find a way in those games, while your Richmonds wander over here minus their five best players, coming off back-to-back 7 goal pantsings, and do us.

“We’ve got a long way to go to be like Richmond”

Sure do, mastermind.

How many times do you think a team has been 2 or 3 goals in front of us at 3QT with a few injury concerns and still managed to fight and hold on for victory? Plenty of times I bet.
Amongst all the games Hinkley has coached, we've overcome a 15+ point 3QT deficit only once - Rd 5 2013. We've surrendered a 15+ point 3QT advantage thrice - Rd 23 2013, Rd 21 2018, and last night.

There have been 49 such 15+ point deficits for us to overcome, and 78 15+ point leads for us to surrender.

Probably warrants some sensitivity analysis, to see if shrinking the margin to 14/13/12/... points produces a different result, but I don't think this particular stat shows that we are weak.

It shows that our games are almost always beyond doubt when the margin is that great at 3QT, but this isn't a surprise for a team who often reveals if they've turned up to play within the first 5 minutes.

EDIT: If you relax the 3QT margin to an even 2 goals, we've come back to win 3/56 times, and capitulated 3/84 times.
