You don't think 3 time all australian, runner up in the brownlow medal and a part of our core midfield for at least 8 years, top 2 in the best and fairest as a midfielder for the last 4 years (where has Drew finished in the last 2 years?) would be a better STRATEGIC option able to switch defensively and offensively as the situation required? And don't say defensive run with midfielders don't win Best and Fairests because Kane Cornes won four of them.

I can think of three players of the top of my head who IMO would be at least as effective defensive midfielders as Drew interchanging through the midfield (Butters, Houston, Dumont, SPP and possibly Jones) Additionally, how often is Drew lauded for his tagging performances??? Drew only spent 75% TOG over the last 2 years. What did we do for the other quarter of a game? Throw our hands up in the air and cry "oh no, STRATEGICALLY we are ****ed" and capitulate (finishing second in 2021 minor round). Did somebody do at least as good a job?

It might be that we don't need a pure defensive midfielder if we have Boak, JHC, Butters, Rozee and Wines all available as first line midfielders with others filling the role at times. If you get the ball first, win the clearances and the contested possessions, one has to wonder what use a defensive run with player is unless they are elite which Drew is not or the midfield is rucking to Finlayson.

To put it another way, "the best defense is a good offense..." Or quoting Hardwick in 2020 "We don't usually use run with roles, we trust our game plan". Seems to have worked well enough for them during their three premierships.
A fit Boak walks back into our side but your depiction of Drew as a "pure defensive midfielder" is wrong. What he does may not be eye catching but so much of it is smart, deft hand work that either intercepts oppo passes or deflects to a team mate in the clear. A very under rated skill.

Fair enough. Our most defensive midfielder. I'd argue that intercepting or deflecting would be described by most as defensive work rather than offensive work even if he is skilled enough to put it to a team mate.

The first time I can remember where Hipwood hasn't torn us a new one
Try 2020, 2021, 2022. Hipwood is a total spud who has played 1 decent game against us in 2019, that’s a long long time ago. It’s actually Daniher who has played well against us in recent times. But don’t let the truth get in the way of your bizarre Hipwood domination fascination. Very very odd, I wish I had some of the gear you guys are smoking

Where has this narrative come from? He's literally 'torn us apart' one single time. The last two times he's played us he's had 8 and 9 touches and scored 1 goal total.
Yes, it’s a new ice induced phenomenon where truth and fiction become a new reality dubbed Hipwood domination fascination by mental health care experts

Same newspaper that plastered the steak knives Dean Gore on the front page when the Dangerfield trade went through.

And they screwed they up too, the pic was a spoon with eyes drawn on it.

I'd have my money on Wines to win us the game over Boak any day of the week. Wines may make some disposal errors but he's usually up and about and is way more deadly around goals. Love Boak but I would describe him dangerous. Reliable is the word that comes to mind. We are way better when we are taking risks.
Boak is a Camry, jhf and rozzee are Ferraris

The thing about Hipwood vs Port, it isn't about the raw numbers. It's how he looks. He usually takes a few strong marks and gets off on the lead. He just looks bigger and has more presence than he does most other times, even if the stats don't show it.

He outbodied Dougal and put him on his arse.

How anyone can say that it was “clearly touched” is beyond me. Inconclusive so it goes to umpires call.

There is absolutely NOTHING that is "clear" about any adjudication that happens in a game of AFL football. It is all the most random shit. And when The ARC gets involved it becomes about as clear as mud.

It’s just the vibe of the thing

That gif of JHF fending of Neale before bombing it to the goal square wouldn’t have happened without Drew’s tap on to space. Just as vital.

There was a replay they showed later that made it clear it had cannoned off Andrews' thigh. But for some reason the review is limited to grainy goalline potato vision that makes most things inconclusive.

So why don’t the adjudicators have access to that footage?
