Review Round 1, 2023 vs Brisbane

Well i was posting pre game so thought i would show my face post that performance!

Briefly on us - well that was just awful. Got jumped not once but twice. Not sure what to make of it and that would be the only caveat for Port - you will get better opposition than that almost every week. No forward structure, nobody willing to fly the flag in the midfield. BUT it seemed Port's intensity was what intimidated us so full credit to the boys as they say.

Port's midfield looked so well balanced. Hard nuts Drew and Wines getting it out. Butters, Rozee and of course JHF sweeping away from clearances. And your wingers in Bergman and Duursma gave us an absolute pantsing.

You can see the difference a fit and firing Aliir and Dixon make. Aliir just dominated whomever he was on. Dixon wanted to squeeze the air out of the ball clunking marks after a bit of a brain fade.

The gameplan from what we saw looked good. Numbers flooding back. quick transition. good mix of ball winners and those ready to exit the stoppage. and just such fast hands to get it out.

I think the question mark is how you go if plan A doesn't work. Only because you didn't need it on Saturday!

I guess it is not news to anyone here Port can play really well. Bringing the intensity every week has been the problem. But wow what a start. Should get some big crowds coming along.
Pretty good summation, and I agree on the confusion re Brisbane's game. Was it just an off day, or was it Port's intensity that won it? That was great to watch from a Port fan's perspective, but the majority of us are still waiting for Port to do this to the next three oppo teams before we get to too carried away.

The biggest takeaway from me was...
1] JHF .. just wow!
2] That youthful midfield mix is really worth getting excited about!
3] No injuries - We have a really healthy list
4] No one had a bad game yesterday - Everyone stood up and played their part.

Pretty much the only thing missing for me is a tall key-back. Damn Geelong for stalling the Ruttegolea trade! Maybe next year?

The quick hands out of stoppage was the biggest change I noticed out of the midfield. Gave us such better looks going forwards. We'll done Carr.

24 inside 50 marks was outstanding. edit Melbourne took 17, and Collingwood, GWS, Geelong and Essendon took 16.

The 3 KPFs took 17 of those 24 (23 in total for them), 11 on the lead, plus Charlie took half a dozen contested marks.

I don't have my stats notes handy, but I reckon we kicked 13 12 goals from marks I50. IIRC Todd 4, Charlie 3, Mitch 1, Lachie 2, Ollie 1, Junior 1, and SPP 1. (SPP kicked a pt)

That comes from better delivery I50 than the usual Putin style just bomb the **** out of the I50 entries.

A convincing performance no doubt, but it's often we've stitched up good teams in round 1 coming off the back of deep September campaigns the year before.

Sydney in 2017, Melbourne in 2019. It can all fall apart but a lot of the form was unsighted in the pre-season which makes me think Brisbane may drop off this year.

I thought Farrell's ball use off half back was significant, short and long range kicks hitting the target nicely.

Burton's speedy and daring runs to hit the player up the field along with Houston's clever ball use wer exquisite.

JHF is obviously the biggest eyecatcher, black socks and boots with a flowing mullet warmed my heart to see. We have an 80s era Maggies player who looks the goods!

SPP is going from strength to strength and is the most underrated player in the comp imo.

If we can silence the Magpie faithful next week and beat Collingwood then we may have unlocked a sleeping beast.

I wasn't elated in our performance, more frustrated that we are so consistently inconsistent.

Melbourne were 17th in 2019

Our kf and key back combined for 10 contested marks.

Without going back through history I’m going to guess that is a pretty rare feat. No other team came close to it this weekend.

Our aerial dominance was something else.

We performed really exceptional, but in hindsight have we exposed why the excitement over brisbanes chances this year might be premature.

I too had them as around the pointy end after they strengthened their midfield but looking at them now, is that spine sans mcstay good enough? I don’t know that it is.

Looks right to be too, though burton could easily have gotten 8

Only vote combo I could find that works. Just depends on whose vote card is whose. I suspect Ken was the one keen on Dixon after beating Harris Andrews and keeping him quiet.

Ken:
5 - Dixon
4 - JHF
3 - Burton
2 - AA
1 - Rozee

Fagan:
5 - JHF
4 - Burton
3 - AA
2 - Rozee
1 - Dixon

This effective kicks sorted by most list, confirms my thoughts JHF is a young bull like a young Ollie Wines, but his skills are more Roger James like.

14 of his 17 kicks were effective, which puts in with the 3 blokes I want to get hold of the ball as much as possible and use their beautiful kicks - Burton, Farrell and Houston. Look at Ollie, only 33.3%

JHF's heat map shows he didn't get a disposal inside 50m, so he's not a forward type easier pressure on his kicks than a mid fielder.

But some of his other stuff was also outstanding. 10 inside 50's, 3 intercepts, 3 goal assists, 11 score involvements, 532 metres gained, 84% time on ground, 20 centre bounce attendances, 4 clearances there and 3 others around the ground and 61% of time forward of the centre line.

My mate and I Went to the bar at half time, and we started winning.
So our superstitious asses stayed there for the whole third quarter. lol
Watching it now since I only saw it on the small ass screens at the game.
I did something similar. When out the back as HT because I was turning into a lobster.
We started winning, so I stayed there.

Didn't go back to my seat until the 20min mark of the last quarter, just to make sure...

I haven't got too involved in the JHF discussion since we traded him in. Partly because the discussion seemed over the top and to expect a lot of him early on after surgery, new team and game plan etc.

But he delivered big time on Saturday. Heard Timmy G call him Bruce Light when he was in the middle of the square and ran and bounced the ball, and a couple of callers after the game said he reminded them of Russell Ebert.

For me, at the end of the game, I though to myself, he is like Ollie was in his first year or two, a big strong energetic bull in the middle, but he has the smarts and skills and toughness of Roger James.

Sure he bombed that kick after fending off Neale, but he was going for goal, but on 4 other occasions I can recall, he looked up and delivered 4 low passes to leading forwards. Ollie rarely did that in his first 8 or 9 years at the club.

Well done to the young midfield group of JHF, Rozee, Butters, Drew, Bergman and Duursma. That's the future, give them a decent shot at it. Ollie and Trav can be contributors as well, but the younger guys seem to want to lead, so let them.

Well done to Lycett too. The Big O is sort of ruckman he does well against. Both the less mobile and less agile types. Just got to be flexible with him depending on who he is rucking against and be prepared to rotate him.
imho Finlayson might be the perfect foil for Lycett

Could also be
Coach 1:
5: JHF
4: AA
3: Dixon
2: Burton
1: Rozee

and

Coach 2:
5: Burton
4: JHF
3: Dixon
2: Rozee
1: AA

I feel that this is more likely as Burton's shutdown job on Cameron may have really impressed one of the coaches into giving him top votes.
