I was impressed with how Dixon rebounded from a poor start on a very tough opponent. A lot of the game is played in the head & I thought he might drop his bundle but he showed great mental strength. Sometimes I want to give him a book titled “the inner game of tennis”, the quintessential book dealing with sports psychology.

Jonas & DBJ have copped a hammering on here the last year or so. But I actually thought both were very good, particularly DBJ, i thought it was nearly back to his 2020 form. I must've been watching a different game because i thought our defence did a terrific job.

I agree with you on Allir Allir, i've been critical of him lately but that is because his form drop off last year compared to the year before was bigger than any other player in my opinion. A lot of that had to do with him carrying that ankle for most of the year i think, he was definitely back to his 2021 best yesterday.
DBJ was great once we were well on top. But was terrible when under pressure. The "non tackles" in the 2nd quarter were poor. Not sure you can trust him when we are pushed

It's funny with Bergman, but every time I saw him from the back my first thought was Wayne Mahney!

The blonde hair, #14 and build ... granted Mahns was more reddish haired but still light.
Talking about players that reminds one of other players, geez that Horne-Francis lad reminds me of Greg Anderson. He, like Anderson, runs with a heaviness in his legs that makes him really powerful - their physiques are very similar.

I can't wait for Roger Delaney to play at fullback, that is, Jeremy Finlayson. If the coach plays Finlayson at full back, I am of the view that this would make our defence Premiership standard.

He is fast over the first five or six meters, he is aggressive, athletic, has great hands above his head and below his knees, he has a great leap and is a magnificent kick. With him and Aliir as the center half back/fullback combo and Jonas taking a player that is more suited to his height, then our defence takes on a very formidable appearance. It would give it a degree of flexibility that we haven't had for a very long time and would be adaptable to any opposition combination. We wouldn't be "robbing Peter to pay Paul", our ruck stocks are good and with young Hayes showing in the trials that he is moving around the ground so much better and is, in my view, the best tap ruckman we have at he club and along with Teakle, I reckon Finlayson would not be missed in the ruck much, if at all. He would make a massive difference to us at full back if that is, he takes to it which I reckon he will.

A word on Dan Houston. He performed like a top drawer league footballer yesterday and not like the lackadaisical player that frustrates the hell out of me. He didn't drop marks that he would have in previous seasons, he stood firm in front of the pack, his hands were excellent and he only made one mistake as far as I could see and that was when we were out of sight. He was as brilliant all round as his kicking is.

I'm sure that he'll be reminded of the non-tackle endlessly around the club but that was the only blemish in what was a return to his All-Australian form. He was top drawer from beginning to end except for his poor decision in electing to try and bump instead of putting on a bear hug.

I had Houston in my top 3. Best I’ve seen him play.

There wasn't just one example. He almost got himself in trouble doing the same thing. He needs to put the body on the line and tackle. Poor example from a leader.

So can you if you say that.

Boak staying around when Geelong came calling was about as close as possible to us looking for one way Tasmanian flights. We'd be GONE.
That shit is as redundant as "remember 2012".
Boak has been a very good club man, a very good player, but time after time he has failed, as much as Hinkley has, to take us to the next level. He will never be remembered as a great of the game because of this. Whilst he is probably still in the best 23, all he is doing is holding onto a spot that could be being used to develop a younger player. We are neither in the position where we are pushing for a premiership or despately need experienced players to lead the youngsters. Because of this Boak' s position in the side is a waste.

Koch taking over, Boak staying, Hinkley signing up. All closely connected timewise. All vital to our AFL survival 2012/13. And really our survival overall, because there was no way of going cap in hand back to the SANFL. The circle-jerk of haters will jump on this comment but our unhappiness with one or all of them because they haven't delivered a premiership is of a whole different order to that of 10 years ago when our club was dying.

It's a long way to go, but it's good to see the "sack ken" fetishists and general doomsday morons put in their place for a week
Did I miss the news that Saturday night's game was a prelim and Hinkley has now made it to his first ever Grand Final?

No? So he's still the longest serving coach in all of VFL/AFL history without a Grand Final appearance then? Better sack him.

We honestly had so many good players during the game that you could make a case for almost everyone who missed out on the best players. It was a true team performance.
Personally, my best included JHF, Rozee, Burton, Houston, Duursma, Rioli, Marshall, Aliir, Bergman, SPP and Dixon but you could definitely make a case for Wines, Lycett, McKenzie too

There is absolutely NOTHING that is "clear" about any adjudication that happens in a game of AFL football. It is all the most random s**t. And when The ARC gets involved it becomes about as clear as mud.
Can't we all just come together and marvel that Port got the benefit of the doubt in a lineball call? Unless things have changed the last year and a bit without attending games, then score reviews at AO were nearly always of our shots on goal and more often than not, turning a goal into an inconclusive potato vision shot that became a 'no goal'.

I haven't got too involved in the JHF discussion since we traded him in. Partly because the discussion seemed over the top and to expect a lot of him early on after surgery, new team and game plan etc.

But he delivered big time on Saturday. Heard Timmy G call him Bruce Light when he was in the middle of the square and ran and bounced the ball, and a couple of callers after the game said he reminded them of Russell Ebert.

For me, at the end of the game, I though to myself, he is like Ollie was in his first year or two, a big strong energetic bull in the middle, but he has the smarts and skills and toughness of Roger James.

Sure he bombed that kick after fending off Neale, but he was going for goal, but on 4 other occasions I can recall, he looked up and delivered 4 low passes to leading forwards. Ollie rarely did that in his first 8 or 9 years at the club.

Well done to the young midfield group of JHF, Rozee, Butters, Drew, Bergman and Duursma. That's the future, give them a decent shot at it. Ollie and Trav can be contributors as well, but the younger guys seem to want to lead, so let them.

Well done to Lycett too. The Big O is sort of ruckman he does well against. Both the less mobile and less agile types. Just got to be flexible with him depending on who he is rucking against and be prepared to rotate him.

Mate, wash your fking mouth out. He's a legend of the club.
Nothing wrong with a Toyota, I’ve owned one for 12 years and it never let me down. Boak is a legend at the club & a walk up starter when fit & is vital to the development of our young mids.
My only knock on him is that his kicking is not up to the standard of the rest of his game & I don’t think he has the versatility to play any other positions except in the midfield. Long season ahead & it makes me smile when I look at our midfield options (Boak, Wines, Rozzee, Butters, Jhf) then look at the very bare cupboard up the road at crow land.
We are spoilt with choices.

Forgot Drew, Duursma, Bergman. We could have the best midfield in the afl soon whilst our neighbours have the worst. I actually believe Rozzee will win a Brownlow but after seeing Jhf I believe he could too

me, enjoying this great round 1 team performance, victory and the positives of all the new recruits: (pic of a guy smiling)
me, remembering the 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 round 1 team performances, victories and the positives of all the new recruits: (pic of a guy looking confused and annoyed)

Well i was posting pre game so thought i would show my face post that performance!

Briefly on us - well that was just awful. Got jumped not once but twice. Not sure what to make of it and that would be the only caveat for Port - you will get better opposition than that almost every week. No forward structure, nobody willing to fly the flag in the midfield. BUT it seemed Port's intensity was what intimidated us so full credit to the boys as they say.

Port's midfield looked so well balanced. Hard nuts Drew and Wines getting it out. Butters, Rozee and of course JHF sweeping away from clearances. And your wingers in Bergman and Duursma gave us an absolute pantsing.

You can see the difference a fit and firing Aliir and Dixon make. Aliir just dominated whomever he was on. Dixon wanted to squeeze the air out of the ball clunking marks after a bit of a brain fade.

The gameplan from what we saw looked good. Numbers flooding back. quick transition. good mix of ball winners and those ready to exit the stoppage. and just such fast hands to get it out.

I think the question mark is how you go if plan A doesn't work. Only because you didn't need it on Saturday!

I guess it is not news to anyone here Port can play really well. Bringing the intensity every week has been the problem. But wow what a start. Should get some big crowds coming along.

I have a serious question to ask.

Did Hinkley coach that game as we played to our strengths, had structure, looked quick and motivated and we beat a good team for four quarters?

I think the score flattered the Lions with the early free kick count.

I haven't watched the full game yet.
