Is it too late for a review thread?

The Good, Bad and Ugly.

Good -

Dominated possession, clearances and ball movement was slick.

Bailey Smith BOG.

Stef Martin (hopefully stays injury free (recruit of the year)).

Ryan Gardner, no howlers, solid performance, keep going young fella.

VDMR - the angry ant ran hard and tackled hard.

The Bad -

The Captain and Vice Captain did not perform at their best. Can a Vice Captain ever be dropped?

Slick ball movement until delivery into the 50. Shocking conversion of inside 50s in to scoring opportunities. Kick it away from Darcy Moore would you!

The Ugly -

Couldn't really think of anything ugly, except maybe Bont's shocking miss from right in front and maybe his AAMI commercial 😂😂.

Thought we played well but couldn't translate that onto the scoreboard.

Baz great.

Martin will be massive for us.

Vandemeer great. Certain best 22 now.

Not sold on the debutants yet.

Gardner was genuinely impressive. Keath good too.

Fix up some inside 50 use and kick it straighter and we should be fairly formidable this year.

The Good: Josh Bruce leading up the ground regularly to take a number of transitioning marks across the entire game. Bailey Dale deep back midfielder - is this position a new creation by Bevo?

The Bad: Wallis played like he didn't know what his position was.

The Ugly: The possession differential indicates we should have won by much more. Since we didn't, the conclusion is our game is riddled with over possessing. And it looked like that on TV too, to be frank. Hopefully, we see a bit more risk taking with long kicking and taking the shortest route home to goal as the season develops.

so impressed with Vandemeer, has added aggression and toughness to his speed game

Bevo singled out him and Bailey Williams, wow this kid is elite now, the complete package, played on Cox, used the Brian Lake "move them under the ball with your hip" move beautifully.

He is, Bailey Williams is now elite. I’m not sure there’s a more complete defender in his position going around. He doesn’t lose a contest, seriously good in the air, work through traffic is unbelieable, racks up the ball, elite long kick. Takes the game on. Knows when to go and when to defend. He’s almost the perfect player I can’t remember the last time he did something on the field that I thought was poor!

You won't lose a lot of games with 60 inside 50s. Just the weight of numbers and starving the opposition will get you a winning score most weeks. Saying that, it would be easier on my heart if we could convert more of those chances. Reckon once they start to build some cohesion we'll start to score a bit more, hopefully we see it in the next few rounds.

yes, need to get back to the form of late 2019 when we were crushing teams

As Buckley pointed out, our forward line is always congested by design, which means we can expect to see repeat low quality entries, with the opposition on those occasions when they do break out of our straight jacket moving the ball quickly to their very open forward line.

Its just how it is.

How good do we look when there’s space in the forward half though, wouldn’t we be better off not worrying about repeat entries we don’t score from anyway and setting up the defence further back and backing our pressure and elite contested game to turn it over higher up the ground/even in defence and then hitting them on the rebound where we score more freely?

If we need to shut the game down we can always resort to our repeat entry style.

Finally catching the replay. What's striking me early is our second and third goal and just good kicks rewarding leads. From memory later entries were a lot more bombs to stationary targets. I don't know if Collingwood just closed off that leading space or our forwards got fatigued but if we can get Naughts, Bruce and English to lead at the footy like this all game we're going to be a very hard team to defend.

Always great to start the year off with a win, achieving it at the expense of Collingwood some tasty icing on the cake.

Some of the things I really liked:
Josh Dunkley not distracted by all the off season rubbish played a great game, don't know what the stats men have to say but he had lots of 1%ers in my book in addition to his 30 disposals.
Vandermeer maintaining his impressive upward trajectory.
Stef Martin excellent debut for the club
Bailey Smith putting in blinder
Bailey Williams, Alex Keath, Caleb Daniel and Taylor Duryea outstanding in defence.

Things that weren't so great
Our disposal, particularly into and within our forward 50 left a lot to be desired.
Our kicking for goal was again pretty poor after an exceptional start.
Adam Treloar not handling the off season turmoil too well and having an ordinary game after a bright start.
Winning the disposal count by 149 but only scoring 16 points more than the opposition.
Some BigFooty posters inappropriately getting stuck into guys like Mitch Wallis and boosting up others like Ryan Gardner.

Overall we won a game that we were expected to against a hard working opposition. Collingwood are a solid team and they pressured us well but let's face it we should have put them to the sword early but didn't and we were lucky they failed to take their opportunities later in the match.

It's good to start off with a win but we need to remember Collingwood aren't expected to challenge for the flag this year so there is still a fair bit of room for improvement.

Go Dogs!

Plenty to be happy about after last nights win, without needing to analyse/criticise the negatives, and it’s good to have a big body at the centre bounces/stoppages to help give our on ballers first use of the ball!

The game closed up considerably after the first 3 or 4 goals.

Good to see us not getting cut up by an opposition ruckman, Stef a big bonus for us. Potential great 1 2 punch with Stef and English.
Need a sports psychologist for our guys to just relax and kick the goals, they are all wound so tight makes it near impossible to be consistent goal kickers. Which is bewildering considering they are mostly very good field kicks

I reckon when we have a dominant defender intercept marking all over us like happens occasionally, we would be better off kicking into the F50 along the ground. :p

Bailey Williams continues his upward trend and has become our most consistent backman notwithstanding the little maestro. He was almost Daniel-like against the Pies, cleaning up so many loose balls and clearing with long kicks to position.
Keath, Libba, MacRae, Smith, Daniel were outstanding.
Dale was solid and used the ball very well.
Duryea was a calm influence and just knows how to defend based on experience.
Treloar looked a bit overwhelmed but will be better for the run.
Need to keep Vandermeer fit because he has real X factor.
Naughton had an almost game but there are big games ahead for him.
Good to see English use his body more in contests. I think Martin's tutoring might be paying dividends already.
Having watched the replay, I agree with others that McNeill may not be ready yet. He was often rushed and didn't know where to position for crumbs.
Bont not in my top 5 which is very surprising.

I thought our tackling was outstanding, we just never gave them a sniff.
As a unit the backline worked very well together, especially with no Wood, Crozier or JJ, who have been stalwarts of the backline.

I was also pleased with the amount of 1%ers, spoils, chase downs even when it looked a foregone conclusion, and it often paid off. It seems to me our pressure got to the Pies in the end, unforced errors, a bit of aggro, even from Pendles, who look a bit old last night. The Smith tackle on him and subsequent goal, was a changing of the guard moment akin to Hodge and Bont in that final in 2016 IMO.

Also pleased the Pies fans cheered Adz, it showed some class.

Very excited at the win. Martin's addition changes the makeup of our side and gives reward to our OP midfield. Only thing I think we need to refine is the final hand ball outside the 50 arc before kicking inside 50. Our entries that saw the first three goals were direct kicks from that position rather than a hand off, making it difficult for our forwards to lead up.

Watching us kick inside 50 for most of the game was like watching golfers chip from the same distance trying to hit the green near the hole (5 to 10 metres directly out from the goal square), turning all entries into massive packs.

Amazing how such a skilled field kick as Bont has trouble from inside 30 kicking for goal. He is not only skilled player that has trouble Dangerfield is similar. Got to be in his head where he is not kicking through the ball and he tends to slice more than hook. He must sort it out or it could cost us a big game.

Our forwards all led to the wrong position, maybe it was due to Collingwoods good positioning, but I suspect just poor communication.

Watch Richmonds forward entries, they don’t a waste a single one. Either Martin or Lynch one out or Riewoldt leading or Cartagena and Rioli dropping into a hole.

‘Really simple but effective.

I would decide on a combination of 6-8 players and get them to work it out. What are the chances of that happening though?

To say that they dont waste a single entry is stretching the truth...

They had 75 entries on thursday night (against a vastly inferior defence compared with the pies) and scored 30 times = 40%

The Blues went inside 41 times for 25 scoring shots = 61%

The Tiges took our blueprint from 2016 and turned the volume up to 11. Their intensity, pressure and ability to stick tackles is what sets them apart.

I wasn’t referring specifically to last Thursday, but I take your point.

Maybe Carltons defence is better than we thought.

I recall their game against us last season. second quarter in particular.
