Think we might see Hobbs and Draper in the team after both did well in the VFL praccy. Maybe we could field the following team;-

Lav McKay McGrath
Redman Reid Martin
Durham Parish Duursma
Perkins Langford Caldwell
Stringer Draper Gresham

Goldy Setterfield Merrett

Bench: Tsatas Hobbs Cox 2MP
SUB: Hind

AFLX was a good idea used the wrong way. It would have been the ideal game for grass roots in NSW and QLD or even the smaller country areas. 9 aside and rectangular grounds .
Trouble was some dipstick thought that it was the answer to tackle cricket over summer and filled it with gimmicks.
For some reason they did not click that 20/20 cricket was invented to make cricket matches played in a similar time frame to many football game’s.
Thinking they could take on cricket with some sort of modified crap was plain stupid.
If the wanted to go that way it could’ve simply been 4 x 15 minutes of the normal game with maybe 16 a side.
Anyway AFLX would have been good for regional NSW and QLD but the screwed it .
I think what the AFL didn't realise is that no sport - but particularly Aussie Rules Football - is a good spectacle when players don't care about the outcome. Agree, way too many gimmicks and it was super cringe, but it was never going to work with players not taking it seriously and it not being an actual competitive hit-out. Anyone who has watched the NBA All-Star games in the past 20 years will know what I'm talking about. Highlights, dunks and alley-oops aren't enjoyable to watch when the opposition is basically supporting and enabling the other team to them. Ditto speccy's, slick ball movement and creative goals.

The AFL also kinda exposed their lack of understanding as to why Aussie Rules is such a great game to watch compared to most other sports in the world. Take out the fierce competitiveness, hardness, toughness, tenacity, bravery etc, Aussie Rules starts to look like handball or some equally bland spectacle. The reason a speccy or incredibly slick ball movement or super creative and skilful kicking and goal scoring is so exhilarating to watch is the pressure it's done under, with player having to evade or break through opposition players slamming shoulder's into their chests or burying them into the earth with a certain intent to cause them pain (if perhaps not injuring them entirely) with zero protective clothing or anything to soften the blow. ALFX could never and can never work unless you can replicate that, which would require players/clubs/coaches to genuinely value winning it, which I can't see ever happening.

Very astute.

I don't think Draper played the full game though? I'm not sure he'll be ready. Hobbs should be. Kicked a couple of goals too.

Prize money makes that happen.

Fair enough too, i thought Goldsteins preseason games were more balanced ruck games than anything Draper has done. Goldstein is still quality and will probably be more motivated than hes been in 4-5 years.

Maybe Goldy can ruffle Xerris hair when he kicks a goal to go along with his 45 hit out, 24 disposal, 11 mark and 15 tackle game?

Agree 100%. It was never going to be something to take on cricket over summer as as you have said they lacked understanding of the product , the players and the market. It should have been used as a grass roots no gimmick game to get players involved in non traditional markets.

No Parish now so I expect to see Durham, Caldwell and Hobbs all to get significant midfield minutes. Possible team;-

Lav McKay McGrath
Redman Reid Martin
Duursma Setterfield Tsatas
Perkins Langford Hind
Stringer Draper Gresham

Goldy Durham Merrett

Bench: Caldwell Hobbs Cox 2MP
SUB: Heppell or Kelly

Has it been confirmed Parish out?

I was feeling pretty confident for this game but now i'm starting to think maybe i am underestimating hawthorn?

How do you all feel about this game?

Yeah, that awful feeling that Hawthorn pull out a win against us, and then we see the Hawks play horrible for the rest of the year.

Essendon having a tough pre season should mean we motor through and either win or get close in bunch of early games.

No Parish and NO risk Shiel team:

N.Cox - Reid - Mckay
Redman - Mcgrath - Martin (Laverde)

Tsatas - Durham - Duursma (Tsatas)
Goldy - Zerrett - Setterfield (Hobbs)

Caldwell - H.Jones - Gresham (1 of Perkins/Guelfi/Menzie/Hind) - Other sub
Stringer - 2MP - Langford

Thats what i would expect. Also wont surprise if Bryan is sub either, youd think Hind is the ultimate sub for us though if not in the 22, which i doubt he is

To be fair, Hawthorne put on a great round 1 last year with a similar theme and an 80's feel.

80's music and cover bands. Old rivalry games showing on the scoreboard. The only thing lacking was the Wynn's Wines badge on the Hawthorne jumpers to make it 100% authentic.

I can only hope that we come close to the same package for before the game entertainment, as it set a great mood right up to the bounce.
