To select the team for R1 a number of questions have to be considered:

Will the game plan change much from the GF?
Will the selectors back in the same team and make only the required changes for Wakelin and Symes, presuming that Chaplin is fit?
Have the selectors got in mind any major structure or positional changes, eg Chad to CHF?
Have any of the non-GF players played and trained well enough to replace a GF player, eg Thomas, Stewart, Lower?
Is there any of the GF players who haven't trained or played well in the pre-season, eg Westhoff, Pettigrew, Surjan, Logan, Brogan - and therefore be replaced on form?

I think if you answer these questions in order then the R1 team may become apparent.

yes, yes, yes, yes, no.

Our gameplan will adapt, Carlile will replace Wakes & Thomas seems in line to replace Symes, but I believe Logan will drop out because he is less talented and dangerous than Gray.

us power fans should be happy....we have a wealth of young talent and back up....

and i still remeber arguing with you guys that danyelle pearce is a star...he has dominated the pre season games...especially against the dockers

on a side note every "footy expert" 2008 ladder prediction has the fremantly dockers in their top 6 WTF is that all about they are shit

I think Shaun Burgoyne will be the differance in this game! If Shaun is up and gets 20+ touches of the pill and jag's 2 or 3 goals we WILL win! A stronger fitter Tredrea will make a differance, taking Scarlett (so lets be honest, dont expect to much from the Warmachine!) then does Harley take D.Motlop, J.Westhoff or B.Ebert? does Chad push forward? that would really strech them! If westhoff is given there third best defender he will be to good, if Motlop is given there third best defender or there best small he will be to good (Tall=To quick, Small=To Strong) I think Hunt MUST go to Ebert! I cant see much use for Gray up forward for us this week, I'ld rather Logan (has shown something in the Pre season)

I would love to see them take a bloody stand, first ball up Lade gets the tap away, it spills out wide towards the wing where a 50/50 ball is there to be won, Salopek heads in to the forth comming contest at full tilt, knowing full well he will ricieve contact and gets cleaned up by Corey/Enright/Kelly high the whistle is blown by the umpire (free kick, to high), Chad and Tommie Logan come over to stand up for Steve, Salopek takes the free, plays on as no one on the mark, (all trying to stop the miny melle) and delivers to Tredrea with clout pouring from the eye brow!

... Welcome Season 2008!!!

*Notice I love Salopek and wouldn't wish for anything mopre than slight concussion, but with Wilson out, Salopek is the next pure Port Adelaide mould!

When are you mods going to go after the real offenders, the ones who misuse the word bias?

Stuff me toots what did i do? cut a bloke some slack hey! English was never my favoured subject, It was always PE, OutDoor ED, Maths and IT!

F- Ebert Westhoff D.Motlop
HF- Rodan Tredrea C Cornes
C- Boak Salopek Pearce
HB- P.Burgoyne Thurstans Cassisi
B- Surjan Carlile Pettigrew
1R- Lade K.Cornes S.Burgoyne
Int- Logan, Brogan, Thomas, White

Em- Krakouer, Gray, Deluca, M.Motlop

Not sure I love this structure - Too many marking targets and I feel it will cause confusion for both the players leading and those kicking to them. Motlop and Ebert both play "taller" than their actual heights and neither are the traditional crumbing forward pockets. I would be tempted to leave Westhoff out all together and replace him with a smaller type player - I just get the feeling the Hoff may struggle this year and I reckon we need to go back to a more 2003/04/05 structure with Tredrea becoming more of a focal point again. Replace the Hoff with Gray.

Should be a very interesting selection meeting for the first game, especially since it is against Geelong.

I would like to see certain players playing in certain positions, but more so I would just like Choco to not think he is the only way we can win.

A previous poster mentioned what a horrid day he had in last year's GF and I couldn't agree more. We have a great squad capable of doing very, very well again this year. We have many senior players who are top shelf, and a batch of younger player's who could be anything, given time.

The one thing I would like to see, more than who plays, or who play's where, is for Choco to pick his side then BACK THEM IN! Courage, skill, and willingness to do the right things for the team will always be so more important that tactics and a players individual stats. As the saying goes (& rightfully so) A champion team will always beat a team of champions. Sheperding, knock-ons, running to good spots against running to get easy kicks, self scarifice, if we have those then I think we can beat anyone.

Geelong are a great side, they are so damn impressive, but given a fair run we can beat them, no question. We do have the talent to do just that IMO. Just need Choco to not try and win it from the coaches box on matchday.

As other posters have indicated, Geelong are a side you have to play honest, committed, disciplined footy against. A couple of the keys from the Patrick Smith article are to get numbers into the corridor and create contests. It's like beating the Eagles in 1994 SANFL GF, it's a case of two mountain goats ramming heads until one gives up. In the 07 GF we fell away to the boundaries to run the ball into our forward line, and every turnover created an open path down the corridor where they hovered like vultures and swarmed the ball forward, while we desperately tried to get back into defensive zones. Too little too late and it left our defense horribly vulnerable, like a sorority party in a Wes Craven film. With three of our four man forward line virtually unable to chase, they picked off the one that did time and again. It was ruthlessly clinical and we can't give them that latitude again.

The funny thing about what Ford said is that we didn't play the way we did in the GF at Kardinia Park - we clogged up the corridor so THEY had to go to the boundary to get around us. I don't know what happened - it's like a vortex of rational thought.

For Rnd 1, all our players have to gravitate to the corridor once they have disposed of the ball, because you can bet your bottom dollar that's where the Geelong players will be heading. Remember, their objective is to play on at all costs - much better if that means kicking backwards or sideways to a wing then straight down the middle.

This is how I see Chocco's lineup:

B: THOMAS - CARLILE - PETTIGREW

HB: SURJAN - THURSTANS - P.BURGOYNE

C: CASSISI - C.CORNES - SALOPEK

HF: PEARCE - TREDREA - RODAN

F: EBERT - J.WESTHOFF - D.MOTLOP

RUCKS: LADE - K.CORNES - S.BURGOYNE

INTERCHANGE: DELUCA - BOAK - GRAY - LOGAN

EMERGENCIES: WHITE(wouldn't argue if he was put into the 22) - LOWER - STEWART - BENTLEY

CHAPLIN FIT - OUT GOES CARLILE

BROGAN FIT - OUT GOES DELUCA

I for one hopes that he tries to win the game from the coach's box - or am I missing something that a coach is hired for.

Cassisi is 110% percent certain to start in the centre square. He, Shaun & Kane are our main clearance and centremen.

You and Ford are dead right. And for those of us who remember the Patrick Smith article it was based on what Chocco said, and then did in R21 at Kardinia Park. As I always say one man's vortex of rational thought is another man's ever decreasing circle of mind numbing paradox.

Never mind, RIT, you can lift. I was laughing away at all the solecisms in one of your posts (I quite liked "miny melle"), and then realised that your expression, aside from the creative spelling and unusual punctuation, is almost always excellent! You make a point, you build your argument, you snappily underline your conclusions. Basically, and I'm not joking here, you're a born writer. (For example, you wrote something like, "...he needs to age, like a fine ruckman". Wow! All of us pseuds were expecting "wine" in place of "ruckman"! But it's true, the best ruckmen take time. It was good, RIT!)

But it would all be so much better if you cleaned up your spelling and figured out how to use apostrophes, commas, that sort of thing. So set yourself that task for this year, and you will no doubt be AA soon enough.

Hey Sandola, have you been playing with dictionaries again - and swallowed one.:D

IMO - 3 letters - M.C.G.

When we are bad, we look really bad at the G, we get sucked wide looking for space and the G is really wide, with very deep half forward flanks...

But hey, stuff trying to re-analyse what went on last year again, the Cats were fantastic on the day and we weren't... As for round one, it is a new year. A fit Tredrea at CHF will have an immediate impact. Hoff to take his natural spot as a third tall in a pocket, with either Lade or the Chad at FF (personally, I'd go with the Chad as much to force Scarlett to man up as anything). Motlop and Ebo are automatic selections and I'd love to see either Krakouer or Gray line up to complete the forward line.

I think our midfield basically selects itself - Lade/Brogan in the ruck (DeLuca as backup), and then Kornes, Cassisi, Boak, Salopek, Pearce and Rodan running around....

Down back, Thurstans should be an automatic for Mooney, and personally I'd like to see Carlisle get Hawkins. I'd love to see Lower start on Steve Johnson, with the Grew as a back up for the role. Surj is, for mine, a natural to take Chapman (or GAblett if reqd) and Poiter B to play the sweeper role.

Have by my count now selected 21 and think I have selected plenty of height - so for the last spot I'd be looking for some flexibility and hence at a choice of Logan, Thommo or Thomilf. Think Logan probably should be the choice, but I'll go with my belief that getting first possession of the pill is sooo important against Geelong, that I'll defy my own wisdom and plump for Thomilf.

My major outstanding concerning chess piece is wtf to do with Ottens if/when he goes forward... I suppose you'd shunt Lade forward, Chad to Mooney and Thurstans to Ottens, but aside from robbing Peter, I'd don't really think that pays Paul, tbh... Frankly, Willits must not be doing much right or must be very obstinate about his desire to be a power forward if we are tampering with reinventing White as a tall defender ahead of him....
